I Don't Buy It: Pink Patch

If you've ever spent some time on Facebook then chances are that you've seen the banners for the Pink Patch. Me, I'm not a regular Facebook user, but I was recently pointed out the Pink Patch by user gumdrops334 so I did a little investigation.

Not only does the motto, "Get Skinny with Pink," and the use of the word "magic" send warning flags flying, but I am immediately turned off by the fact that the main ingredient, Fucus Vesiculosus, aka Bladderwrack - wtf?! - has yet to be proven to be safe or help with weight loss. Scary, yes, but unfortunately questionable safety is pretty common in weight loss supplements these days - it's really the website that enrages me the most.

The site blatantly markets the patch towards teenage girls with statements such as, "You WILL Have the Hottest Body and the Dream Life," and "Wear the Pink Patch and you WILL boost your confidence and self-esteem," even though at the very bottom of the site there is a disclaimer that the product is not recommended for children under 18 years of age. If that were the case, why is it all in pink and white? Why do the models look like they are 14 years old and why do the testimonials refer to high school and being popular? And since when does being skinny mean you'll have a dream life?

I've also been told that once you order your free trial, the company automatically charges ($50) and sends you the next month supply unless you cancel it online. Sounds fishy? That's because it is. Me, I'm definitely not buying it. And neither will my daughters. Ever. Are you?

Jessica Alba Has a Day at the Park With Her Mother and Daughters

Jessica Alba kept a watchful eye on her daughter Honor Warren yesterday at a park in NYC while she fed her baby Haven Warren a bottle. The mother of two took her kids to a playground in the West Village and the Alba-Warren girls were joined by Jessica's own mom, Catherine, for their day out. Catherine and Jessica traded off holding Haven for a bit so Jessica could play with Honor on the swing set, and Catherine doted on her new granddaughter, who was cozied up in a pink beanie. The Alba-Warren family has been on the East Coast for more than a week. Jessica and Cash Warren dressed up for a night at a fundraising event hosted by Ralph Lauren, but for the most part, the parents have been focusing on their two kids with trips to the park and outings around town. Before heading to NYC, the foursome also took a chance to get into the Halloween spirit a bit early, visiting the pumpkin patch in LA. Honor even wore a princess costume for the visit!

Would You Ever Use a Shaving Brush?

I recently discovered eShave, a luxury brand dedicated to scraping the whiskers off men's faces in style. And while their shaving creams are impressively thick and the razors artfully sculpted, the product that really got my heart racing was—of all things—a classic shaving brush.

I have always been fascinated by these sophisticated throwbacks, also known as badger brushes, probably because they're about as far as you can get from the unglamorous, clunky can of shaving cream and pink disposable razor. But when I told the brand’s founder I had never tried one before, she sent me this sexy little black number immediately, swearing that plenty of women are ordering them for themselves.

Following her instructions, I dipped the brush into a jar of the almond-scented shaving cream and lathered up my legs. I was relieved to find the brush felt soft against my skin, nothing like I expected from the porcupine-looking bristles. The brush produced a rich, dense lather that left me smooth, without my usual bumpy patches. I have no idea if it really does exfoliates your skin to prevent irritation and ingrown hairs, as the company promises, but it definitely gave me a closer shave. Although it takes a few extra minutes the shower (I normally use a razor with a built-in block of shaving cream), I'm now hooked on this most traditional male of all beauty products. A Few New Bits About Brit's Believe

Most of you said you're tired of celebrity fragrances, and, well, I'm feeling overwhelmed by them, too. While some, like Covet by Sarah Jessica Parker, are created with a lot of input from the star in question, others seem to be patched together with little or no input. I could be way off-base here, but I have a feeling Britney's new fragrance, Believe, falls into the latter category. Considering her odd behavior this year, I find it hard to, er, believe, that she's had the time to be deeply involved in Believe's development.

Still, the scent is expected to do at least $10 million in US sales during its first year, and WWD reports on its fragrant notes:

The scent, by International Flavors and Fragrances, has top notes of guava pulp and golden tangerine; a heart of honeysuckle and linden blossom, and a drydown of patchouli aura, sensual amber and pink pralines.

WWD says that Believe is "arguably the most sophisticated" of Britney's fragrances, but those notes sound pretty sugary and young to me. And the packaging, while more grown-up than the looks of Curious and Fantasy, is still more girly than womanly. Believe ($38–$58) launches in October, but if you pre-order online, yours will ship earlier.
