PETA Save the Whales Ad: On Target or Over the Line?

The animal rights group PETA has never been known for employing subtle tactics, but they are known for showing some skin.

Their recently unveiled ad, a billboard in Jacksonville, FL, shows some flesh - that of an obese woman in a bikini and they compare her to a whale. Needless to say, people are outraged by fat shaming tactics being used to promote vegetarianism. PETA stands by their ad and here are excepts from their press release:

A new PETA billboard . . . reminds people who are struggling to lose weight - and who want to have enough energy to chase a beach ball -- that going vegetarian can be an effective way to shed those extra pounds that keep them from looking good in a bikini. The ad shows a woman whose "blubber" is spilling over the sides of her swimsuit bottom . . .

Trying to hide your thunder thighs and balloon belly is no day at the beach.

Who Is the Sexiest Celebrity Vegetarian?

Even if you're a meat eater, you can probably appreciate PETA's annual Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity contest. Voting is now open for this year's awards, which honor one male and one female celeb for their sexy meat avoidance. Past winners include Kristen Bell, Prince, Tobey Maguire, and Carrie Underwood.

This year's list of nominees includes about 100 men and 100 women who practice vegetarianism. It was actually really fun to scroll through the names to see which celebs are vegetarians. I knew about a lot of them, like Natalie Portman and Alicia Silverstone, but others were very surprising. To a see a list of celebs you might not know are vegetarian, read more.

Alicia Silverstone PETA Ad: Cool or Not?

A very controversial commercial for PETA starring Alicia Silverstone has hit the airways recently and I am curious what you guys think....

The new ads were set to hit Houston airwaves more than twenty times Wednesday, and PETA claims they chose Houston for the debut because it so often ranks high on lists of cities with the worst eating habits.

Ben & Jerry's Breast Milk Ice Cream?

When I read the post on GiggleSugar about the obscure Craigslist ad requesting people to suggest flavors for their homemade breast milk ice cream, I thought it was a joke. Apparently not. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is also hopping on the breast milk ice cream boat and are now urging Ben & Jerry's to make the switch from cow's milk to breast milk.

Tracy Reiman, executive vice president of PETA, sent a letter directly to Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, saying PETA feels the transition away from cow's milk will reduce the suffering of cows and provide customers with healthier products (Um, since when is ice cream considered healthy?). The letter also said that dairy products have been linked to juvenile diabetes, allergies, and obesity. Another PETA representative said she knew this idea sounded crazy, but it's no more absurd than humans consuming milk from another species.

Since Ben & Jerry's factory is located in Vermont, a state filled with extremely open-minded people, these ice cream makers did applaud PETA's efforts, but felt that breast milk was best left for babies. A La Leche spokeswoman said that breast milk and cow's milk aren't interchangeable and that each mom makes a unique formula for her baby's needs, meaning it's not meant for just anyone. Ben & Jerry's responded with a statement that cow's milk has proven to be a healthy part of American diets for many years, and they're not ready to make the change. Well that's a nice way to say, "This idea is udderly ridiculous!"

My big question is, who would supply this milk, and could they possibly pump enough to fill the public's ice cream needs? I'm also wondering about the nutritional advantages, since PETA claims that breast milk is healthier. So I thought a side-by-side comparison would be in order here (wow, I never thought I'd ever be posting about this). Now I can see that cow's milk is actually healthier - less calories, fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbs, and cholesterol, and more protein.

I'm thinking that the overall reaction here is "Eww," but maybe I'm wrong. What do you think of this idea?

Alicia Silverstone: The Kind Diet

It's no secret that Alicia Silverstone is an animal lover. Remember how she starred in that sexy commercial for PETA to tell the world she's a vegetarian? Well now she's taking her passionate views a step further with her new book about going vegan, titled The Kind Diet, that's set to hit stores in the Fall of 2009. In case you're not familiar with a vegan diet, it involves not eating any animal products including meat, milk, or honey. Alicia enthusiastically illustrates how choosing a plant-based diet can benefit your body and how you feel about your body. Although Alicia is vegan mostly for humane reasons, the Kind Diet is also healthy since it's high in protein and fiber and low in saturated fat and cholesterol. Even though the foods are plant-based, she makes them sound delicious and indulgent.

A vegan diet doesn't just benefit the people following it. It also obviously saves the lives of many animals, and in her book Alicia explains how choosing a vegan diet can benefit our world as well. Talk about a win-win-win.

I'm curious, will any of you buy this book and try a vegan diet?
