Another Reason to Get More Sleep: Performance

Your lack of sleep could be affecting your performance at the gym...

The amount of sleep a person gets affects his or her physical health, emotional well-being, mental abilities, productivity and now performance too. Studies have associated lack of sleep with serious health problems such as an increased risk of depression, obesity, cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes.

According to new research presented at SLEEP 2007, athletes who get an extra amount of sleep are more likely to improve their performance in a game including faster sprint time and increased free-throws. Furthermore, athletes also reported increased energy and improved mood during practices and games, as well as a decreased level of fatigue.

What does this mean to you? Well, get more sleep, even if you're not an athlete. If you're overtired, you may not get as much out of your exercise routine as you should. Besides, no one ever said, "Gosh, I am too rested to workout today", now did she?

Fit's Tip: It is recommended that adults get between seven and eight hours of sleep each night. Don't have time? Then at the very least, try to fit in a nap during the day. Work isn't the issue, being a mom is? Then ask your husband to help you sleep an hour more tomorrow morning.

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban Travel Down Under With Their Girls

The whole Kidman-Urban family stepped out in Sydney yesterday. Nicole carried 1-year-old Faith while Keith held onto Sunday's hand. The foursome recently traveled Down Under, where Keith will appear on the Australian version of The Voice. He'll mentor a group of singers along with other coaches Seal, Joel Madden, and Delta Goodrem in the series, which will air sometime this year. Keith's been the one singing lately, since he hit the stage at the Grand Ole Opry for his first post-throat surgery show earlier this month and had two concerts in Texas over the weekend. He's not the only star to recently recover from the vocal cord procedure since Adele made her own return performance at last night's Grammys.

The Rum Diary

In this adaption of Hunter S. Thompson's novel, we follow the wild escapades of Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp), an American journalist who takes a job at a newspaper in Puerto Rico in the '50s. Although Paul has every intention to report on the important news of the region, he just can't say no to a good party. While the location is absolutely stunning (as is costar Amber Heard) and Depp has some seriously hilarious moments, the story doesn't satisfy. The DVD includes a behind-the-scenes featurette and a documentary.

In this drama, Michael Shannon plays Curtis LaForche, a small-town man who manages a happy family life, despite his financial struggles and daughter's disability. When Curtis starts having terrifying dreams about a storm of apocalyptic proportions, he has difficulty communicating his anxiety to his wife or community. Despite the fact that Take Shelter didn't receive an Oscar nomination, it received five Film Independent Spirit Award nominations, including one for Shannon's performance. The DVD extras include deleted scenes, a commentary track, and a Q&A with Shannon and costar Shea Whigham.

The Grammy Awards took place in LA last night! The action started right away on the star-studded Grammys red carpet, where outlandish fashions were donned by some of music's biggest names like Fergie, Nicki Minaj, and Rihanna. The fun continued during the show, thanks to host LL Cool J. In addition to paying homage to the late Whitney Houston, there were lighter moments thanks to performances from Rihanna and Coldplay, Katy Perry, Paul McCartney, and even the Beach Boys. The night, though, belonged to Adele with six wins for her song "Someone Like You" and her album 21. The Foo Fighters were a close second with five new statues. Rihanna and Coldplay Rock Out With an Amazing, Sexy Grammy Performance!

Rihanna and Coldplay totally knocked their Grammy performance out of the park when it came on about one third of the way through the big show this evening in LA. Rihanna kicked things off with a solo rendition of "We Found Love," which she accompanied with her signature super sexy dance moves. She then teamed up with Coldplay for a medley of their songs, starting with "Princess of China" which went right into their hit "Paradise." It's already been a performance-packed Grammys, but Rihanna and Chris Martin's collaboration was certainly a highlight. Rih showed off some skin with her onstage outfit, but she also turned heads with her red carpet look earlier in the evening. Rihanna wore a custom-made Armani gown, which left little to the imagination.
