I'm sorry to say, but our wrists are pretty weak. That's no insult - it's the truth! They're skinny and delicate, and they have tiny muscles.

Dear DrSugar,
I am 20 years old and I have been exercising regularly for about a year and a half. Although I don't belong to a gym or use a personal trainer, I run around my neighborhood, use my stationary bike, do workout videos, and occasionally go to a yoga class.

I have had deep-tissue massages that have left serious bruises, but barely made a dent in my tight muscles. I have also had Swedish massages that felt like I was being tickled for 60 minutes no matter how many times I told the massage therapist to increase the pressure. Recently, I went to see a massage therapist who has studied the Hendrickson Method (formerly called orthopedic massage, but so many independent therapists use that descriptive that the man who created this technique decided to name it after himself).

By this time of the year a lot of us are either totally full force ahead with our workout program, or have left it in the dust with the rest of our new year's resolutions. For those of us who fall into the first category, congratulations!
Now that you've gotten into the groove you may have even upped your workouts to almost every day, which is great but if you feel yourself starting to get burnt out, it may be time to ease up a bit.

I love hiking in the Fall because of the beautiful scenery and perfect weather — the crisp air never leaves me too hot or too cold. On the weekends I often go on all-day or multi-day hikes in Yosemite valley or the Lake Tahoe region. Some of my friends equate hiking with a leisurely stroll through the woods, but anyone who hikes regularly knows this isn't always the case.

Since running is one of my favorite forms of cardio, I'm a big fan of the treadmill when I can't get outside for a run. I'm also big into the elliptical, and by the looks of my gym, it appears tons of other people are too. While it's a popular piece of gym equipment for so many reasons, there are also some disadvantages to using one.

Surgery
Kyphoplasty, a surgical technique used to treat spinal fractures, does not improve a person's back pain or quality of life, according to a review published in 2006 by a nonprofit health services research agency. Kyphoplasty should only be done if bed rest, medicines, and physical therapy do not relieve back pain.
Ultrasound
Therapeutic ultrasound uses sound waves to deliver gentle vibrations to an area of the body.
