NYC Chain Restaurants Required to Display Calories, Starting Monday

I applauded New York City when it banned trans fat from restaurants and started using healthier oils. I was psyched that fast food chains were also being required to post calorie counts on their menus but annoyed that McDonald's, Burger King, and Wendy's decided that rule didn't apply to them. So it went through the courts, and too bad for them, they're going to have to listen. A judge declared that this regulation is reasonable and will apply to restaurants in NYC that are part of chains with at least 15 outlets across the country. That includes fast-food places like McDonald’s and sit-down chains such as Olive Garden and T.G.I. Friday’s.

The calorie posting rule goes into effect this Monday, April 21. Some restaurants including Starbucks and Chipotle have already started to post calories on menus, but the Health Department won't start fining non-complying restaurants until June 3.

NYC is hoping that by displaying calories, consumers can make healthier choices (like deciding NOT to super-size it), and it will then help to reduce the prevalence of obesity and diabetes (type 2). New York City is the first US city to enact a regulation regarding displaying calories on menus, but Seattle and the state of California are both considering similar bills. Pretty awesome, huh? George Clooney held Stacy Keibler's hand as they left Craig's restaurant in West Hollywood yesterday. It was a special evening for George, since his Inside the Actors Studio episode aired and he got candid on everything from his home on Lake Como to pranking Brad Pitt. Brad had a chance to chime in on the jokes in his own interview with James Lipton, which took place in NYC last night. Brad continued chatting this morning when he stopped by The Today Show with Moneyball costar Jonah Hill. The duo are talking up their movie in the run-up to the Oscars, where Brad and Jonah are both up for honors and Moneyball is nominated for best picture. Since George and his The Descendants also got a nod, the award show fun between Brad and George should continue on Feb. 26.

Jason and Olivia Share a Cozy Lunch Following Their Romantic Candlelit Weekend

Jason Sudeikis and Olivia Wilde held hands leaving lunch at Little Dom's restaurant in LA yesterday. Since stepping out as a couple in early December they seem to be splitting their time between Jason's home base in NYC and Olivia's West Coast pad. Jason and Olivia celebrated New Year's Eve together in the Big Apple and just returned from a weekend getaway to Palm Springs. Things got extra cozy for Jason and Olivia on Saturday night when strong winds knocked out the electricity at their luxury hotel. Guests were supplied with flashlights and candles to move around the property during the blackout. According to sources at the resort Jason and Olivia remained in high spirits throughout the storm, and didn't seem bothered by the power outage.

Times are tough and living in a city like NYC isn't cheap. Instead of cutting back on nice restaurants, some Manhattanites turn to dating sites to find men who will pick up the check. One of these women has come forward. She told Business Insider she subsidizes her $45,000 salary with free dinners she gets from chivalrous men she meets on Match.com. The 23-year-old claims her busy dating schedule brings in $1,200 a month in free food and drinks.

The story from this anonymous free rider isn't the first time I've heard of women taking advantage of a free dinner date. I've known acquaintances who have used this thinking to justify online dating in the first place, telling themselves, "What's the worst that can happen? A free dinner?" Of course, there's a clear line between going out with numerous men a week with no intention of finding a romantic connection, and seeing a nice meal as a perk of online dating. Perhaps it's time to go dutch on the first date, as a precaution.
