Website of the Day: My Virtual Model

If you're in the market for a site that combines personalized avatars, fashion, decor and a geek-chic take on shopping, check out My Virtual Model.

The site offers virtual changing rooms and simulators for home decorating - its dressing-room and My Fit features enable consumers to "try on" clothes from stores like H&M on the Internet. The concept is the perfect addition to H&M's high-tech service that allows consumers to make purchases with their cell phones. While I wouldn't trust it to find clothes that suit my body type, I'm intrigued by the idea of a more personal, online shopping experience.

All you have to do is pick an avatar that looks like you - or even upload your own headshot to an avatar's body for extreme personalization - and select certain fashions for the virtual dressing room feature.

Paul Walker Talks About Being Shirtless and "Accidentally Sexy"

Shoe Review: Mizuno Wave Prophecy

I've been a fan of Mizuno's running shoes since my first pair of Alchemy shoes, so I was excited when I heard I'd be able to test out the newest offering from the company, the Mizuno Wave Prophecy ($200).

The Wave Prophecy is the result of over seven years of research to improve the company's signature Wave technology. This model debuts the full-length Infinity Wave Plate, which runs along the entire length of the sole. The Wave Prophecy uses the two stacked plates to provide runners with performance-enhancing technology like optimal energy disbursement and what Mizuno calls a "dynamic feel" for your whole foot.

The new technology sounded enticing, but since the Wave Prophecy isn't a stabilizing shoe like my Alchemy faves, I was curious to see how they'd feel on my overpronating feet. In this post, she talks about the one key factor that keeps her spirits up during her unemployment - friends.

What is a friend? In my eyes, a friend is defined as the quintessential support beam through the myriads of adversities encountered through the journey we call life. The ones that not only see you smile but the ones that see you cry. In job searching, this role is no exception. Through my last post, I had been asked, “How do you stay so positive and never lose the motivation or drive to keep searching”? And with that question, I began to ponder about my own experience and ask myself that exact question. Although many abstract ideas began popping into my head, one factor remains concrete: friends. Now you may ask why I did not include family into the bundle, and I will shortly explain why.

Coming from a traditional Asian family, I had rarely gone against the wishes and desires of my parents, at least, not until recently. I was taught that success and hard work provided lavish items like spacious vacation homes, or luxurious materialistic items. In my own family, this success was modeled by the professions of doctors, lawyers, and entrepreneurs with little much in between. As an anecdote, I remember being berated by my father at the age of 14 years old for wishing to attend a “fashion and business” course at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. With a small stash fund, I combined three paychecks from my part-time job as a children’s craft party hostess and DJ to subsidize this course, and to this day, I have no regrets. Looking back, the costly sum of $300 to my 14-year-old self then is a priceless piece of my education now. While my parents and family do not particularly advocate my life in the retail and fashion world in terms of prestige, job security and sustainability, my friends have always been the ones that kept me reaching for the stars.

I'm officially a Kindle addict. Although I've enjoyed my Kindle 2 for quite some time now, I couldn't help but get a taste of the latest Kindle, which just so happens to be smaller and lighter than the previous model. It's an amazing little gadget, and one that I keep in my bag at all times thanks to the simple and chic Amazon cases that turn my ereader into a Moleskin look-alike.
