Modern Dance at the Oscars!!! Pilobolus Moves

Did you see the cool moves of Pilobolus last night on the Academy Awards? They're a modern dance company that has been making sculptural and shape oriented dances for years. Well if you didn't catch the show last night, here's a video of their Oscar performances. Their athletic dance style combines the flexibility of yoga and the strength of weight lifting. Trust me, Pilobolus is unlike anything you've ever seen.

Interested in seeing Pilobolus perform live, check out their performance schedule. If you've already seen them, and they've inspired you to move, classes are offered through the Pilobolus Institute (most classes and workshops are in Connecticut where they are based).

Taking risks (like standing on someone's shoulders to make a shadow image of an Oscar statuette) and trying new things is considered good for your mental health. The brain and the body both appreciate a challenge. Plus dance, especially the way Pilobolus does it, really works you out and gets you strong.

So if you are interested in dancing, try contacting local dance studios and movement centers to find out about other classes that might help you to discover a new way to move, have fun and exercise.

Revenge and Happy Endings Get Shuffled Around in ABC's New Fall Schedule

ABC has announced its brand spankin' new Fall schedule, and there are a few big things to take note of. Obviously the network's new series are built in, but a few returning series have new spots in the lineup, like Revenge, which is shifting to Desperate Housewives' vacated Sunday night slot. Happy Endings and Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 are moving to Tuesdays, giving a new comedy the Modern Family lead-in on Wednesday nights. ABC Renews Revenge, Once Upon a Time, Modern Family, and More

With season finales rolling on, we may be wondering about the fate of certain characters, but now we at least know the fate of some of the shows. In the case of most of ABC's slate, there's good news: ABC is renewing freshman series Once Upon a Time, Revenge, and Suburgatory, as well as veteran series Modern Family, The Middle, Grey's Anatomy, and Castle. ABC's reality shows Dancing With the Stars, The Bachelor, and Shark Tank also got picked up for additional seasons. There's no news yet on the fate of Happy Endings or Private Practice, but let's just say we have our fingers crossed. UPDATE: Happy Endings has also been renewed for a third season!

Happy Anniversary, Studio 54! Decor Inspiration From the Club's Look and Celeb Clientele

This week in 1977, arguably one of the most influential clubs in history - Studio 54 - opened its doors at 254 West 54th Street, Manhattan, to the dancing public. Catering to a wide variety of clientele, the club welcomed gay and straight, black and white, famous, infamous, and totally anonymous guests. It was, by all accounts, absolutely the place to be seen in the late '70s.

Not only was the clientele special, but the space itself was, too. Cavernous in size, the club had a stage, balconies, sitting areas with tables, and a spacious parquet wood dance floor. Strobe lights in the form of columns flanked the club and a mirrored main bar under the balconies was in close proximity to the dance floor. A variety of other spaces, such as the infamous "Rubber Room" (which could be sprayed down), as well as a basement frequented by celebrities, made up the rest of the club.

Today, we're going to take you through some shots of the club's decor, and of course, it's famous celebrity clientele, including Halston, Michael Jackson, Woody Allen, Andy Warhol, and many more. When I was a teenager we didn't have iPhones, we didn't text, and our prom photos are actual, physical photographs (they are pre-Facebook, luckily). But it's a whole new world out there for high schoolers these days. I was curious about how teens in 2012 do prom, so I started browsing Instagram - something we also didn't have in high school - to get a glimpse into the proms of today. While the fashions may be a far cry from what we wore a decade or longer ago, the ways teens ask their potential dates haven't changed much, besides, of course, the ones utilizing modern technology (yes, there are some texts in there). So this prom season, see the creative and not-so-creative ways the teens of today are asking their dates to their high school dances!
