Sliders Two Ways - Beginner and Expert

A nationwide celebration as big as the Super Bowl is the perfect occasion for serving all-American hamburgers. Translate them into game day eats by passing around plates of bite-sized sliders. Keep them simple (and not too sloppy!) by topping them sparingly with caramelized onions. Or, if you're feeling up to the challenge, take inspiration from another football favorite - seven-layer bean dip - for a winning combination of fixings. Get both finger foods when you read more.

I've seen my share of awkward moments on The Martha Stewart Show - she's spun around a stripper pole, not so subtly insulted Rachael Ray, and threw down rhymes with Snoop Dogg about "green" brownies. Awkward moments and all, I can't ever turn away from Martha. Maybe it's because regardless of how weird it seems to everyone else, it never is to her.

She took it to an entirely different level on yesterday's show though. At a roundtable discussion with comedian Kenan Thompson, chef Marcus Samuelsson, and nutrition and weight management expert Dr. David Katz, Martha tells Kenan he should ask Dr. Katz a question because, "You're a little overweight." I cringed and looked away, finding myself in even more disbelief because it didn't even occur to her that she had done anything wrong. Oh, Martha.

I'm loving this clip of Martha Stewart going completely outside of her box by doing a pole dancing workout with S Factor founder, Sheila Kelley. Check out this clip as the domestic diva gets down and gyrates her hips in full workout gear. Despite not being able to slide upside down on the pole, Martha did finish with an impressive leg lift.

If you've ever wanted to try a pole dancing workout but were too afraid, you've got no excuse now. If Martha can do it, so can you. In her own words: "She's got me on the pole. Woo-hoo!"

Martha To Feature Food Bloggers on New Season

The new season of the Martha Stewart Show debuts today and besides proclaiming to be her "biggest" season yet, Martha has invited two prominent food bloggers to participate in Wednesday's program. Smitten Kitchen's Deb Perelman and Matt Bites' Matt Armendariz will sit down with Martha to discuss their interesting lives as food bloggers.

Always one to keep up with the current trends, it's no surprise that Martha would invite these prolific, popular bloggers to join her in the kitchen. Pearelman and Armendariz aren't the first food bloggers to appear on the show, last season Bakerella taught Martha how to make her famous mini-cake pops. I'm a huge fan of Ms. Stewart and I'm excited to see what she cooks up.

Factors Contributing to Overweight Pets

I was watching the Martha Stewart Show recently while I was on the treadmill at the gym. On this episode she had her veterinarian, Dr. Marty Goldstein, as a guest to talk about overweight pets. It was interesting to hear Dr. Goldstein's opinion on the three factors that can contribute to overweight pets because (in my opinion) they are rather similar to the factors that can contribute to overweight humans...

Diet: First and foremost, a pet's diet must be regulated. The order of ingredients on a nutrition label is so important because whatever is listed first is the most prominent ingredient. The serving size your pet should get might be far different from the recommended amount on the bag or can. Above all, limit treats. Many people question whether wet food is better than dry food. It generally takes more processing of the food to get it into a bag than into a can. Processing destroys the vitamins, enzymes and natural integrity of the food; processing makes it less whole, so generally wet food is healthier.
Metabolic Deficiency: There are natural fat burning enzymes called L-Carnitine and chromium picolinate, which you can get at health food stores. They work well and are all natural. Before giving your pet any sort of supplement or medicinal remedy, consult your veterinarian.
Exercise: The best exercise for a dog is jogging with him or having him retrieve a stick or ball. Twenty to thirty minutes of really good exercise a day is recommended, the more the better. For cats, increase play and encourage movement around the house.

I know the whole diet and exercise bit seems like common sense at this point, but it never hurts to reiterate it, does it? Helping your pet lose weight may also lead to helping you lose weight too. Want to really make your dog run? Consider getting a Chuck it ($7.60) ball launcher to make your dog go the distance to retrieve the ball. Buy it from Amazon.com. If you go this route, be sure to get yourself moving as the Chuck It really takes all the effort out of throwing the ball. For a sure way to get both your heart rates up: Do rounds of jumping jacks after you chuck the ball until Fido brings it back to you.

Bobby, Giada, Guy Up For Emmy Nods - Who Should Win?

Today, the Daytime Emmy Awards revealed who's in the running for top nods, and, as expected, a number of culinary personalities and cooking shows are on the list.

Giada de Laurentiis, Rick Bayless, Paula Deen, Sandra Lee, and Nate Berkus are all in the running for outstanding lifestyle/culinary host, and Rachael Ray is up for outstanding talk show host. Even the defunct Martha Stewart Show got props with an outstanding lifestyle program nomination.

One of the biggest honors bestowed on the food community is that of outstanding culinary program, and this year, no matter who wins, the folks at Food Network will be celebrating; all four nominees belong to the Scripps family. Tell us: who would you vote for as the best cooking show?

The Martha Stewart Show Canceled on Hallmark, Moves to PBS

Update: Martha Stewart announced her 30-minute show, Martha's Cooking School, will air this Autumn on PBS. "The response to our announcement for a PBS cooking school series is wonderful," she tweeted, taking a dig at Hallmark: "Easy access to PBS as opposed to Hallmark will be wonderful."

This morning broke news that the Martha Stewart Show will be no more. The program, which has been on the air since 2005, struggled to maintain the necessary viewership, even with a 2010 move to the Hallmark Channel and a more heavy celebrity focus (side note: how cute does Hugh Jackman look in the above photo?).

There is, however, some good news in all of this. The finale show promises to be "a lavish Oprah-style send off," which is always fun for viewers. There are also reportedly talks of a Martha makeover show being pitched around, and we're not sure how we feel about that just yet. How are you feeling about this end of an era? Will you miss Martha or did you think it was time for the show to say goodbye?

Food Through a Microscopic Lens: The Art of Caren Alpert

Social network feeds around the world brim with food photography of all kinds; whether it's a quick memory of Friday night dinner or a Martha Stewart-quality holiday tablescape, we feverishly share online what we eat. Chances are we don't know what really goes into the food we're documenting. Wanting to take a deeper look into our cultural obsession with food beyond the five-star restaurants and cooking shows, Caren Alpert, a San Francisco-based photographer looks at the makeup of our food in a literal and technologically astounding medium. Using a scanning electron microscope, Caren captures the molecular essence of both natural and processed foods.

At a recent TEDx event, Caren showed us the results: high definition images that look more like alien landscapes than cake sprinkles and vegetables. From start to finish, the entire process of capturing the true structure of a food staple can take weeks to months, plus Caren must infuse colors into each photograph in post-production work. Take a look at a selection of Caren's work in the slideshow for an intimate look at items we consume daily and note the startling difference in the composition between artificial foods and those from the Earth. It takes the notion of food photography to a whole new scientific, and beautiful, level.
