The Pros & Cons of Snacking

Snacking has endured a bad reputation for a very long time, but it seems to be coming back into vogue. There are pros and cons to the habit and one should never snack mindlessly, of course!

Here are some of the pros and cons to snacking.

The Pros

Snacking can fill nutritional gaps and boost your intake of fruits and veggies. This of course is only true if you are snacking on fresh fruits and veggies which I highly recommend. Peaches and cherry tomatoes are phenomenal this time of year and make tasty snacks.
Snacking can keep your mood on an even keel, when you feel like your blood sugar is sinking it is easy to feel "low,"
Snacks can help with appetite and weight control since they can prevent over indulgence at meals.
Snacking, spreading meals and calories, might require less insulin and might reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

The Cons

The danger in snacking is that it can add extra calories to your day. By unconsciously adding 100 calories per day beyond the calories you burn can make you gain 10 pounds in a year.
Snacking should mirror your over all diet philosophy of moderation (yep, my favorite concept).
If you find yourself too hungry, when you are reaching for a snack, you might end up reaching for something loaded with calories. So plan your snacks ahead of time.

Insulin IS a Hormone

There is so much in the news about Diabetes these days, especially since Type 2 Diabetes is on the rise and the number of new cases seems to be sky rocketing. Since yesterday was American Diabetes Alert Day , I wanted to learn a bit more about the disease. I thought I should start at the beginning, go to the source as they say, and figure out what insulin is and what it does.

First off, insulin is a hormone that is produced in an area of the pancreas known as the Islets of Langerhans hence its name - insulin is derived from the Latin word insula meaning island. Hormones are chemical messengers bringing "information" from one cell to one or more other cells. Inuslin helps move glucose (aka energy) around our bodies, from the bloodstream to individual cells. Cells require glucose for movement, growth, repair, and other functions. It acts as a messenger between the bloodstream and cells, helping the cells absorb energy.

Insulin also regulates carbohydrate metabolism, the breakdown of carbs primarily into glucose. It effects fat metabolism as well.

When glucose enters our blood, the pancreas should automatically produce the right amount of insulin to move glucose into our cells. Type 1 diabetes (previously called juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes) is a disorder of the body's immune system that results from the pancreas not producing any insulin. Type 2 diabetes (previously called adult onset diabetes) results when the body doesn't respond appropriately to insulin, a condition called "insulin resistance."

James Bond like gadgets just got health conscious. Check this new gizmo out!!!

Scientists at Battelle’s Health and Life Science Division have designed an insulin injector for Eli Lilly that looks like a fountain pen and remembers how much of the drug you’ve taken and when.

The Huma-Pen Memoir hides a hypodermic needle and uses insulin cartridges. It records the dose, date, and time of the past 16 injections. The memory is a safety feature for diabetics because overdosing is life-threatening (they have to take so many injections a day, sometimes they forget when they've last taken one.

Want to know how it works? Put it on your stomach, push the top and hold it for five seconds. A fresh, half-inch needle is inserted for each use. Then you replace the cap after the injection.

The Huma-Pen, which was unveiled on February 2, will go on sale next week, costing only $45.

You may use this medicine just before or just after a meal.
A doctor, nurse, or pharmacist should teach you how to give your insulin shots. Make sure you understand how to use the medicine and give yourself the shots.
You will be shown several places on your body where this shot can be given. Use a different body area to give your shot each time you use your medicine. Keeping a record of where you give each injection will help make sure you rotate body areas.
Use a new needle with the Humalog® Mix 75/25? Pen each time you each time you give yourself insulin.
Do not mix Humalog® 75/25? with any other insulin.
Each time before using Humalog® 75/25? Pen, mix the insulin by rolling the Pen between your palms 10 times, then turning it upside down 10 times. After mixing, the insulin should look cloudy or milky. Do not use the insulin if the white material is still separated from the clear liquid, or if it looks lumpy, discolored, or has white particles sticking to the bottom or side of the Pen.
Do not share your needles, syringes, or medicine with anyone else.

If a dose is missed:

Ask your doctor what to do if you miss a dose of insulin.

How to Store and Dispose of This Medicine

Store unused Pens in the refrigerator. Do not freeze. The expiration date on the insulin package tells you how long you can keep the medicine in the refrigerator.
Keep the Pen at room temperature in a cool place, away from sunlight or heat. Throw the Pen away after 10 days, even if it still has insulin in it.
If you can't keep unused Pens in the refrigerator, you may keep them at room temperature in a cool place, away from sunlight or heat, for 28 days. Throw the medicine away after 28 days.
Each Humalog® 75/25? Pen is to be used for only 10 days in a row.
After giving yourself the injection, remove the needle from the Pen immediately, and throw it away. You should receive a container for throwing away your used needles and Pens. Otherwise, throw your used needles away in a hard, closed container that the needles cannot poke through.
Throw the medicine away after the expiration date has passed.
Keep all medicine out of the reach of children and never share your medicine with anyone.

Drugs and Foods to Avoid

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

Some medicines can make it harder for you to control your diabetes. Make sure your doctor knows about all other medicines you are using.

Warnings While Using This Medicine

Follow the special diet and use the correct dose of insulin that your doctor orders. Diet, exercise, medicine, and checking your blood sugar are important to control your diabetes.
Your doctor may want to check your progress and blood sugar at regular visits. Be sure to keep all appointments.
You may have low blood sugar while you are using insulin, especially if you miss a meal, exercise for a long time, or drink alcohol.
If your blood sugar gets too low, you may feel shaky, weak, drowsy, cold, confused, or very hungry. You may sweat or have blurred vision, a fast heartbeat, trouble concentrating, or a headache that doesn't go away.
Ask your doctor what to do if you have low blood sugar. You will need to control it quickly. Teach your friends, co-workers, or family members what they can do to help you in case you have low blood sugar.

It is usually best to use this medicine about 15 minutes before eating. Talk with your doctor about your personal schedule, because your needs may be different.
Use a new needle each time you inject your medicine. You will be shown the body areas where this shot can be given (often your stomach area, thigh, or upper arm). Use a different body area each time you give yourself a shot. Keep track of where you give each shot to make sure you rotate body areas.
Before using, mix the insulin by rolling the cartridge, FlexPen® syringe, or vial between your palms 10 times. Turn the cartridge or FlexPen® upside down at least 10 times, so the glass ball moves from one end to the other. You do not need to turn the vial upside down before using. The insulin should look cloudy or milky after mixing. Use your dose of insulin right away after mixing it.
Do not change the brand of your insulin unless your doctor tells you to. When you get a new supply of insulin, check the label to be sure it is the correct type of insulin.
Do not mix NovoLog® 70/30 with any other insulin.

How to Store and Dispose of This Medicine

Store insulin containers that have not been opened in the refrigerator in the original carton. Do not freeze. Do not use the insulin if it has been frozen.
Store the opened vial of insulin in the refrigerator. Do not freeze. If you cannot keep your vial of insulin in the refrigerator, you may store it at room temperature for up to 28 days. Keep the vial as cool as possible and away from heat and light.
Store the opened cartridge or FlexPen® at room temperature for up to 14 days. Do not store in the refrigerator or freezer.
Ask your nurse, pharmacist, or other health caregiver about the best way to dispose of any leftover or outdated medicine. Throw away used needles in a hard, closed container that the needles cannot poke through. Keep this container away from children and pets.
Keep all medicine away from children and never share your medicine with anyone.

Drugs and Foods to Avoid

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

Some medicines can make it harder for you to control your diabetes. Make sure your doctor knows about all other medicines you are using, including clonidine (Catapres®), niacin (vitamin B3), pentamidine (NebuPent®), a sulfa drug, oral diabetes medicine (such as glyburide, Avandia®, Glucotrol®, Glucophage®), a steroid (such as cortisone, prednisone, methylprednisolone), a quinolone antibiotic (such as Cipro®), or blood pressure medicine (such as atenolol, metoprolol, Inderal®, Toprol®).
Do not drink alcohol while you are using this medicine. Tell your doctor if you smoke.
Make sure your doctor knows if you are also using any medicines that can lower the potassium levels in your blood. One kind of medicine that can affect blood potassium is a diuretic or "water pill" (such as furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide, Lasix®).

Warnings While Using This Medicine

Make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have kidney disease, liver disease, or neuropathy (nerve problems). Tell your doctor if you are planning to become pregnant.
You may have low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) while you are using insulin. Low blood sugar is more likely to happen if you are sick, miss a meal, drink alcohol, or change the amount of time you exercise.
If your blood sugar gets too low, you may feel shaky, weak, drowsy, cold, confused, or very hungry. There are many different devices available for giving an insulin injection. You may be taught how to use a regular syringe, an insulin pump, a FlexPen®, or some other device. Each device has special instructions that you must follow. Make sure you understand all the instructions for your device before you use it.
Most people will use rapid-acting insulin just before a meal. You may be told to use Humalog® (insulin lispro) immediately after you eat.
Know what your usual kind of insulin should look like. Before each injection, look at the insulin to make sure it still looks the same. Most insulin should not be used if it has changed color or looks too cloudy or thick.

How to Use This Medicine

Injectable

Your doctor will prescribe your exact dose and tell you how often it should be given. This medicine is given as a shot under your skin.
This insulin combination usually starts to work about 30 minutes after it has been injected. The strongest effects are from about 2 hours after the injection until about 12 hours after the injection. This insulin combination may keep working for as long as 24 hours after the injection, but it slowly works less and less. The way this insulin combination works for you might be different. You and your health caregiver must work together to know the best times for you to use your insulin.
You will be taught how to give your medicine at home. Make sure you understand all instructions before giving yourself an injection. Do not use more insulin or use it more often than your doctor tells you.
There are many different devices available for giving an insulin injection. You may be taught how to use a regular syringe, a pen with cartridges, the InnoLet®, or some other device. Each device has special instructions that you must follow. Make sure you understand all the instructions for your device before you use it.
Know what your usual kind of insulin should look like. Look at the insulin each time you are getting ready to give an injection to make sure it still looks the same. Most insulin should not be used if it has changed color or looks too cloudy or thick..
Gently agitate or rotate the vial until the mixture is uniform.
You will be shown the body areas where this shot can be given. Use a different body area each time you give yourself a shot. Keep track of where you give each shot to make sure you rotate body areas.
Use only syringes that are specially made for insulin. It is best to always use the same brand and type of syringe. Some types of insulin must be used with a certain type of syringe. Ask your pharmacist if you are not sure which one to use.

If your blood sugar gets too low, you may feel weak, drowsy, confused, anxious, or very hungry. You may also sweat, shake, or have blurred vision, a fast heartbeat, or a headache that will not go away.
If you have symptoms of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), check your blood sugar. If your blood sugar is 70 mg/dL (milligrams per deciliter) or below, do one of the following: Drink 4 ounces (one-half cup) of fruit juice, or eat 5 to 6 pieces of hard candy, or take 2 or 3 glucose tablets. Re-check your blood sugar 15 minutes later. If your blood sugar is above 70 mg/dL, eat a snack or a meal. If your blood sugar is still below 70 mg/dL, drink one-half cup juice, or eat 5 to 6 pieces of candy, or take 2 to 3 glucose tablets.
Learn what to do if your blood sugar gets too low. Teach friends, co-workers, and family members what they can to do help if you have low blood sugar.
Your body may react differently to this insulin medicine than it did to insulin medicines you used in the past. Watch for early signs of low blood sugar, since these signs may be different or weaker than you are used to.
