Haagen Dazs Five Ice Cream

Ice cream is one of my weaknesses, and I always keep some in the freezer just so I can enjoy a spoonful or two when I'm craving it. Frozen yogurt, low calorie sorbet, or dairy-free ice creams are all good options, but sometimes you want the real deal. If you're looking for a healthier alternative, but don't want to give up on flavor or creaminess, check out Haagen Dazs Five. The five stand for five ingredients, which is all you'll find in their seven new flavors.

To see what the ingredients are and see how it compares to regular Haagen Dazs ice cream read more.

Here is the nutritional info for a half cup serving. The first ingredient for this line of ice cream is skim milk, while in their regular ice cream, the first ingredient is cream. That means these seven flavors have fewer calories, are lower in fat and saturated fat, and have less cholesterol. So if you're looking for an all natural ice cream that's slightly healthier but doesn't compromise on taste or creaminess, Haagen Dazs Five is just the thing.

5 Guilt-Free Frozen Treats

Back in 1984, President Ronald Regan declared July National Ice Cream month, and who doesn't love a frozen treat in hot Summer months? You don't need to eat a handful of ice cream cones to celebrate; you can still cool off and indulge with one of these guilt-free treats (although technically one is a Popsicle).

Popsicle or Ice Cream?

Warm weather means folks are reaching for cooling treats. Popsicles tend to be lower in fat than ice cream, but ice cream is cool comfort food. While most people prefer one type of frozen treat over the other, some opt for popsicles because the calorie count is lower. What about you? Which frozen treat are you more likely to eat?
Baskin-Robbins New Lighter Line of Ice Cream

At a time when many people are resolving to eat less ice cream, Baskin-Robbins has introduced its new line of more diet-friendly treats under the umbrella name BRight Choices. The new selection includes a variety of flavors of light, fat-free, dairy-free, and no-sugar-added ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sorbet.

The company's website lists nutritional information for the different types of treats and flavors - for example, the Premium Churned Light Ice Cream has 50 percent less fat and 20 percent fewer calories than Baskin-Robbins' regular ice cream. Keep in mind the serving size for the nutritional info is for a 2.5-oz. scoop.

To find out how to score a free scoop from the BRight Choices line, read more.

Bring your gym membership card to your local Baskin-Robbins on Jan. 15 for a free scoop of any BRight Choices flavor. You're not exactly walking into the produce section when choosing a frozen treat for a snack, but it's always nice to have a lighter option when you have a hankering.

Ben & Jerry's Breast Milk Ice Cream?

When I read the post on GiggleSugar about the obscure Craigslist ad requesting people to suggest flavors for their homemade breast milk ice cream, I thought it was a joke. Apparently not. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is also hopping on the breast milk ice cream boat and are now urging Ben & Jerry's to make the switch from cow's milk to breast milk.

Tracy Reiman, executive vice president of PETA, sent a letter directly to Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, saying PETA feels the transition away from cow's milk will reduce the suffering of cows and provide customers with healthier products (Um, since when is ice cream considered healthy?). The letter also said that dairy products have been linked to juvenile diabetes, allergies, and obesity. Another PETA representative said she knew this idea sounded crazy, but it's no more absurd than humans consuming milk from another species.

To find out if Ben & Jerry's is going to start a new line of bosom milk ice cream read more.

Since Ben & Jerry's factory is located in Vermont, a state filled with extremely open-minded people, these ice cream makers did applaud PETA's efforts, but felt that breast milk was best left for babies. A La Leche spokeswoman said that breast milk and cow's milk aren't interchangeable and that each mom makes a unique formula for her baby's needs, meaning it's not meant for just anyone. Ben & Jerry's responded with a statement that cow's milk has proven to be a healthy part of American diets for many years, and they're not ready to make the change. Well that's a nice way to say, "This idea is udderly ridiculous!"

My big question is, who would supply this milk, and could they possibly pump enough to fill the public's ice cream needs? I'm also wondering about the nutritional advantages, since PETA claims that breast milk is healthier. So I thought a side-by-side comparison would be in order here (wow, I never thought I'd ever be posting about this). Now I can see that cow's milk is actually healthier - less calories, fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbs, and cholesterol, and more protein.

I'm thinking that the overall reaction here is "Eww," but maybe I'm wrong. What do you think of this idea?

Marisa Miller on Fitness and Ice Cream

Flip through any Victoria's Secret catalog and you'll see Marisa Miller's gorgeous face and body gracing the pages. Marisa has always been one of my favorite models, I think it's because of the freckles, but it could be her amazing body, either way I was thrilled to see her on the cover of Fitness Magazine this month.
Miller opens up to Fitness about her, well, fitness. She also reveals her weakness, which will resonate with a lot of us. Here are highlights:

On why she exercises: “I’m comfortable with the curves I have. I like having a woman’s body…It’s not like I’m exercising to be skinny-I’m the girl who needs curves. I like my butt and boobs!”

Miller’s workout secrets: “I’ve tried everything. I love surfing: it’s spiritual and physical…I also like Spinning. It’s good toning for your rear and legs. I’ll put in one of my favorite Guns N’ Roses music video DVDs and start pedaling. I find it’s so much easier to work out when I can distract myself with something visual.”

On her biggest dietary weakness: “Definitely ice cream.”

On what she stays away from-most of the time: “Processed stuff….Recently, I came back from a long trip and [my husband had] gone grocery shopping-which was nice, but it was all TV dinners and Cap’n Crunch. I said, ‘Honey, is there a fruit or vegetable anywhere in the house?’ And he’s like, ‘I got canned peaches!’ God bless him, but he doesn’t make it easy for me.”

Check out the latest issue of Fitness (on newsstands Oct 9th) to see and read the full article.

Saturated Fat: A Little May be Too Much

OK, so we know that saturated fat isn't good for us. These fats are NOT essential to our bodies whatsoever, but boy are they tasty. Butter, ice cream, hot dogs, bacon - all dairy and meat products contain saturated fat.

Why are they bad for us? Saturated fats are known to raise LDL (bad) cholesterol levels over time. This leads to plaque build-up in your arteries, making it difficult for blood to pass to and from your heart, which puts you at risk for a heart attack. Now new research shows that food loaded with saturated fat may have immediate effects on your heart.

A study conducted in Australia took 14 healthy adults (ages 18-40) and gave them 2 meals consisting of a piece of high-fat carrot cake and a milkshake. The first meal was made with 90% saturated fat and contained 68 grams of fat! That's equivalent to a double cheeseburger, a large order of French fries, and drinking a large milkshake (yikes!) The second meal was made with polyunsaturated oil, and only contained just 9% fat.

The researchers took blood samples of the participants before and after the meals to see what happened to their HDL (good) levels of cholesterol. They discovered that the levels of good cholesterol decreased after the first fat-filled meal, and increased after the second healthier version.

The effects may be temporary, but they are still a cause for concern since this happens every time a person eats a meal high in saturated fat.

Fit's Tips: Here's the deal. It's important to limit your saturated fat intake as much as possible. Aim for 10% or less each day. That means if you eat 2,000 calories a day, eat no more than 20g of saturated fat. Cut back on meat and full-fat dairy products. Also check labels to see if there is hidden saturated fat (they tend to lurk in processed foods and snacks). You can also go for meat alternatives like Gardenburgers and Tofu Pups. I also love dairy free foods such as Wildwood Soyogurt and Tofutti Cuties (dairy-free ice cream sandwiches). They taste great and are so much better for your heart.
