Get in Gear: Camp Inn Hydr8r on Sale

As the weather has gotten a bit chillier I have started wearing thin gloves during my runs after work with my husband. It's been great except that the gloves have made it hard to keep a grip on my water bottle, and last night I dropped it about four times. So today I have decided I need a hydration pack, especially since I am the type of runner that needs to stay constantly hydrated while running.

On my hunt for a hydration pack, I came across the Camp Inn Hydr8r Hydration Pack, which to my delight was on sale for $9.93! I am thrilled because I am not yet sure how much I am going to love running with something on my back so I don't want to invest a lot of money on a product that may not be the right solution for me. This particular hydration pack holds 100 ounces (or just under three liters), which means it won't be too heavy when it's full. I love that it comes in a bunch of fun colors, which means now my only issue is deciding which color I want.

Don't Let Traveling Get You in a Bind

The stress of traveling and being away from home can really mess with your bathroom schedule. Changing times zones, eating foods you're not used to, and skipping out on exercise doesn't help either. To prevent tummy issues, here are some tips on how to stay regular when traveling.

Drink water whenever you can as your choice of beverage. Not only will it keep you hydrated, but it'll also keep things moving.

When traveling, bring your own snacks that are high in fiber. Nibble on carrot sticks, apples (with the peel), trail mix with dried fruit and nuts, granola bars, and high fiber cereal. Having healthy snacks on hand will prevent you from eating processed foods that can tie the digestive system in knots.

For more helpful tips keep reading.

Get in Gear: The Sugar Pack

If you are into doing anything outdoors, you've got to have a Camelbak. It's an easy way to make sure you've always got your water with you.

Sometimes when you're out for the day, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, or whatever, it's annoying to have to stop all the time to get your water bottle out of your backpack.

Using the Camelbak keeps your water much more accessible so you are apt to drink as much water as you need.

It's a pack that has a reservoir pouch that holds the water. And there's a little tube that goes from there all the way up to your shoulder. To get the water out, you bite down on the end and suck - it's like a big straw - it's so easy.

But won't my water freeze? Nope. Camelbak makes insulated packs like this one so your water is protected from the cold. It's called the Sugar pack. You know I love that!!!

For $70, it holds 70 oz of water and has extra storage space for important things like snacks, a camera, your cell phone, and extra layers. What a brilliant idea.

Sports Energy Products Explained: Gels and Chews

When you need energy for long workouts, there are many choices. Sport drinks, powders, and tablets offer fuel with hydration, but many just provide electrolytes to prevent dehydration. If you're working out for over an hour, you need to provide your muscles with some fuel, aka glycogen, and that's where gels and chew come into the mix. Conveniently packaged in single-serving packets, full of carbs and sometimes electrolytes, you can easily carry one in your pocket or pack. Gels like GU, Clif Shot, and Hammer Head contain sugars that provide super concentrated, fast-acting fuel. Just squirt a pack in your mouth every 30 to 40 minutes of intense exercise, down some water, and you're good to go. You can easily consume the entire serving while on the move, provided you have water to help wash it down.

Bite-sized energy chews such as GU Chomps, Clif Shot Blocks, and Luna Sport Moons offer the same quick energy, but they're less sticky and messy than gels. Since they are more like gummy candies, some folks find them more pleasing to eat, making them great for hikes and longer, slower runs or rides. They can also be easier to digest for some people (although that has not been my experience), but remember that you need to take them with water just like gels. Consume six chews per hour of running, and what's nice is you don't have to take them all at once. Both gels and chews are fairly inexpensive, about $1.30 per packet. Tell me which do you prefer - gels or chews?

Review: NUUN Hydration Tablets

Staying well hydrated no longer needs to be a tasteless chore. NUUN hydration tablets make your water more palatable while loading it with electrolytes - and all this with only six calories (read "no added sugar") per 16-ounce serving.

NUUN tablets dissolve in water, similar to Alka Seltzer, but NUUN tastes much better, and once the tablet has dissolved the bubbles disappear. The ratio is one tablet for 16 ounces of water, which just so happens to be the size of many cycling water bottles. The tablets come in five flavors: lemon-lime, tri-berry, orange ginger, kona cola, and citrus fruit, and all are made with no artificial colors. A sports drink doesn't need to be neon-colored to quench your thirst.

To see how I think NUUN tastes, read more.

In general, I am not a big fan of sports drinks; they either taste too sugary or taste too much like artificial sweeteners. I like NUUN because it doesn't taste like either. The NUUN flavors are mild, which I like - especially when I am working hard. My favorite flavor is tri-berry, with citrus fruit in a close second. Unless you like sipping on flat Coke, I wouldn't bother with the kona cola, although I hear it blends nicely with the orange ginger. You can halve the tablets and become your own NUUN mixologist. NUUN is sweetened with sorbitol, a sugar alcohol, and acesulfame potassium, an FDA-approved artificial sweetener. I like that the drink is made in my reusable water bottle, so I don't feel like I am adding too much to landfills since the tube (but not the stopper) is recyclable. I also appreciate that this is an electrolyte drink fortified with the sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium I need to not become dehydrated, and that it is not a recovery drink with carbs, sugar, and protein. I like to eat these after I workout, not drink them. All in all, I am a fan of NUUN.

A single tube, with 12 tablets (makes 12 16-ounce drinks), retails at REI for $6.50. You can also buy the tubes in bulk - four tubes for $22 from REI, or packs of nine from the online NUUN store for just under $50.

If you're already a fan of NUUN, tell me why below.

Travel Without the Tummy Troubles

Hooray for the holidays! Traveling for the holidays - not so much. Get ready for traffic, waiting in lines, flight delays, and possibly constipation. For some people, switching time zones or being away from home always upsets their digestive system. Here are some ways to keep things moving while you're on the move and ways to keep your tummy at ease.

Pack your own snacks, and include high fiber foods such as whole grain crackers, cereal, granola bars, dried fruit, pears and apples, and nuts. Avoid bananas and dairy products since these foods can block you up.

Thirsty? Opt for straight up water, and drink lots of it. Staying hydrated will help your body keep its natural flow.

Medicine may be necessary. Pack some Pepto in case you have heartburn or diarrhea. If you're bloated and haven't gone to the bathroom for over 24 hours, pop some Citrucel caplets. They add bulk to your food to help you go, without causing gas.

What else can help tame your tummy? To find out read more.

Once you reach your destination, definitely splurge on the sweets and eggnog, but don't stuff yourself silly. If your system isn't used to all the sugar, fats, and alcohol, it can really affect your stomach.

Load up on the fresh veggies before and during dinner. They'll fill you up so you eat less food, which will help prevent that bloated feeling. Plus the fiber will help you stay regular.

If your stomach is uneasy after eating, sip on peppermint tea or eat a ginger candy.

Get exercise daily while on your trip. Pack some fitness gear in your suitcase, go for a walk, hit the gym at your hotel, or ski with the fam. Exercise is a wonderful way to prevent constipation.

Source

What to Do After Your Workout

You might not have ever thought about this but what do you do once you've finished 30 minutes of cardio and lifted your last rep of your last set? Go home? Not quite.

Just because you've done the hard part does not mean that you should just pack up and head on home. Feel free to congratulate yourself for a job well done, but here are a few more things you should consider doing:

Hydrate. Just because you're done working out doesn't mean you're done hydrating. Chances are you've lost a good bit of water during your workout, even during Winter workouts, so be sure to keep on drinking water to keep hydrated beyond your workout.

Cool-down. A 5-10 minute cool down is necessary to bring your heart rate back down to a normal rate, lower your body temperature, as well as help prevent blood pooling, muscle soreness and cramps.

There are a few more tips so read more.

Stretch. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, "Stretch after exercising." If you need reasons why, be sure to check out my top ten reasons to stretch.

Eat. This is the one most people have the hardest time with because it seems counter productive, however, it is very important to refuel after a workout - within 90 minutes. I'm not saying you should stop at Macaroni Grill on your way home from the gym, but try to eat something that will help repair your torn muscles and replenish your lost energy.

Stay Hydrated With Platypus

Since we all know how bad disposable water bottles are for the environment (since most of them end up in landfills because they don't get recycled), it's a great idea to use a reusable water bottle. Both Nalgene and SIGG bottles are great, but if your goal is to stay hydrated during some kind of strenuous activity, lugging around a hard bottle can be kind of annoying.

Check out these bottles made by a company called Platypus®. Their water bottles and carriers come in a range of sizes and shapes, and they're all collapsible, "taste-free," lightweight, easy to fill, and rugged enough to handle temperatures from freezing to boiling.

Want to know what else? Then read more

These are similar to Camelbak hydration packs, but more versatile. You can use Platypus bottles on their own or add accessories to them. I love the Neoprene insulted bottle holder to keep liquids hot or cold. You can also get a hands-free drink tube so you can tuck the bottle in any existing pack you're carrying and attach the tube to your shoulder strap.

These are perfect for hiking, biking, and backpacking because once the bottle is empty, it collapses so you can roll it up for easy, compact storage. Plus these are really inexpensive - an 80 oz bottle is only $9.95. You can check out all the Platypus gear at REI.com.

Get in Gear: Kelty Day Pack

Hiking is one of those outdoor sports that's great for late summer and early fall, when warm weather begins to cool. When you go for a hike, it's a great idea to go with someone who has trekked the trail or mountain you're planning to hike. You need some durable hiking boots and some wicking socks to go with them.

You're also going to need a comfortable pack to hold your water and gear. Check out this Kelty Range Daypack. Like the name suggests, this pack has a whole range of uses. There's a roomy, padded main compartment that features an interior sleeve that can be used to carry a hydration reservoir (like one from Platypus), a journal or laptop.

Want to hear more? Then read more

There's also a pocket for your iPod or MP3 player with an exit hole for your headphone cords, if you like to hike and listen to tunes. There's also a front zippered pocket you can use to hold your cellphone, camera, snacks, a long sleeve shirt, a lightweight raincoat, a first-aid kit, or whatever. You can also use the 2 mesh side pockets to hold stuff for easy access.

If you're carrying a heavy load, there's a removable waistbelt and adjustable sternum strap to cinch the pack to your body for added comfort and stability. I know when I'm hiking up a mountain, I get really hot, and this pack features air-mesh padded shoulder straps and a padded no-sweat backpanel with venting channels to help keep your back dry.

You can order this versatile Kelty Day Pack from REI.com for $70. It comes in denim/navy (as shown) and caramel/brown. It's the perfect size for any day outing.
