New Year's Eve is synonymous with going big. Champagne, lavish dinners, and all-night parties are how many people I know will be spending the holiday. I thought I'd be right beside them, especially since I give myself a bit of a free pass when it comes to the holidays.

Hanukkah wrapped up last week and Christmas has finally arrived. This all means that 2010 is just around the corner, bringing the fresh start of a new year. After all the shopping, baking, decorating, planning, and cooking, it is finally time to relax and enjoy yourself and your loved ones.

Merry Christmas everyone! I'm guessing by now you've unwrapped all of your presents — I hope you received everything you asked for. I know that there can be some controversy around receiving fitness-related gifts, but I was super excited to get a new down jacket for Fall and Winter camping trips, a resistance band, and an awesome Polar watch/heart rate monitor this Christmas.

I like to keep up with my regular exercise routine, especially when I'm traveling, but sometimes during the holidays, I have so much going on that I don't have time to fit in my usual sweat session. Most of Christmas Day is spent as it should be — relaxing and spending time with the family I don't see very often — but after all the festivities are over, I try to get a few family members to go for a snowy hike in the woods. One year, we went nighttime skiing.

Full disclaimer: when it comes to dessert at Christmas, I am not one to skimp on ingredients since it comes but once a year. Since baking is such a science, I find that it's hard for cookies and cakes to come out tasting right when you start adjusting ingredients and their measurements. That being said, I do try and come up with healthier versions of cookies whenever I can.

Made famous as one of the gifts offered by the wise men on the very first Christmas, it looks like myrrh fights cholesterol. The tree resin found in the Middle East has been used in healing remedies for centuries to treat sore throats, congestion, and cuts and burns. Now myrrh has been found to lower levels of LDL (bad cholesterol) while raising good (HDL) cholesterol — at least in rats, which were used in a recent experiment.

Holiday parties don't have to mean drinking too much and stuffing yourself silly. It's all about the choices you make. I've already offered a number of ways to prevent hangovers, but here's a less scientific strategy: put down your drink and hit the dance floor.

It seems like people drink more in December. I think it's because there's a lot of celebrating going on, and even if you're not celebrating, it's cold out and liquor makes you feel warm inside. It's not until the next morning that you realize all that punch was a bad idea.

If you're cramming in last minute Christmas shopping, you might just be headed to the mall for a marathon day of shopping.
A long shopping day means you're going to need to refuel. With all the wonderful treats around you don't want to waste precious calories on run-of-the-mill food court fare.

For many people, December is a heartwarming time of year, since it's all about spending time with friends and family, and giving gifts to show your appreciation. It's also about obscene amounts of decadent goodies. Icing-covered cookies, chocolates, eggnog and other alcoholic beverages, and so many holiday dinners and parties.
