CDC Report Says South Most Inactive, Northeast Most Active, But Most Americans Not Exercising

A new report from the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that Americans are not moving enough: fewer than two in 10 get the recommended amount of exercise, and more than 25 percent of the American population is considered inactive. This statistic is most rampant in the South and Appalachia regions where it's reported that 30 percent of individuals do no form of exercise at all. Read more

Health Statistics of US Adult Population Including Alcohol Consumption and Obesity Rates

The National Center For Health Statistics, a branch of the Centers For Disease Control, released its latest batch of numbers on the behavior of American adults, and in my opinion, the numbers don't paint a pretty picture. After surveying over 79,000 Americans age 18 or older, the center compiled some interesting stats on the state of our healthy and not-so-healthy habits. Six out of 10 adults Read more

Smoking and Drinking During Pregnancy

We all have our guilty pleasures, but when a new life comes into play, it's time to give them up . . . or so we thought. A recently released study from the Center For Behavioral Health Statistics and Quality was intended to evaluate the breakdown of substance use during pregnancy by race. But the outcome that shocks us most is that one in five women smoke while they're pregnant! Of those, Read more

Will Teen Virginity Become a Trend?

The spotlight might be on the teen moms and (their copycat friends) becoming celebrities courtesy of MTV, but not all adolescents are sexually active. A recent report by the National Center for Health Statistics says "27% of young men and 29% of young women ages 15-24 say they've never had a sexual encounter." That's a five and seven percent increase (of those that are abstinent) from the Read more

Sex or Exercise: Which Is Better?

The annual Bicycling Readers' Choice survey is out, and after reading through it, one statistic stood out to me: 58 percent of female respondents would choose cycling over sex, if they had to give up one or the other for a month. Men were split down the middle, with 50 percent responding that they would choose cycling over sex. I admit, I am pretty shocked at this statistic — Bicycling's Read more

How Golf Helps Your Career

I know. Golf? I, too, was guilty of judging the sport as a slow, boring, old boys' club. But what was once TV programming to induce weekend napping is now one of my favorite sports to play, and not just for the health benefits. In fact, the greatest driving force behind why women play is for business reasons. There are more than six millions female golfers just in the United States, and here are Read more

Quick — what's the leading killer of children under the age of 5? Not AIDS, not cancer, not even the flu. First National Food Day Since 1977

Today may just mark a great shift in reeducating American people about the direct connection our bodies have to our food. For the first time since 1977, Food Day, a grassroots movement whose "goal is nothing less than to transform the American diet," has a national footprint. At its core, Food Day aims to mobilize the American public to get serious about more sustainable and humane food policies Read more
