Bike On: The Escape 1 W by Giant

Flipping through the latest issue of Bicycling Magazine, you learn the cyclists suffering through the Tour de France are riding some seriously pricey bikes. Just the frame and fork of the fancy Giant road bike for team Rabobank prices out to around $3000. But you don't have to drop so much dough to get a sweet ride by Giant. The company loaned me its new Escape 1-W ($500) for tooling about town, and I dig it.

New to Giant's line of bikes, the Escape is a hybrid bike: a little road bike, a little mountain bike, and a little cruiser all pleasantly rolled into one. Like most cruisers, the bike has upright positioning so your line of sight is more forward than down making this a great bike for commuting. The handlebar stem is reversible, so you can choose how high or low you want the handles to be. Add to the upright positioning a total of 24 gears - an eight-speed cassette (the little gears in back) and three chainrings (the big gears, or cogs, in front). All these gears mean you can ride the Escape up some hills - another reason I would choose this bike over a classic cruiser. The shifters, mounted on the handlebars, are easy to manipulate, and the handles themselves are super comfy. Nice and wide, they're made out of supple rubber. The seat, however, is pretty stiff, which is actually better for riding (a too squishy saddle is bad for the back). The pedals are nice and big, making biking when wearing fashionable shoes, totally doable - sometimes a gal needs to bike in her heels.

What I like most is the detailing. There are small mint green accents on the silver bike. Even the underside of the seat has a bit of green, as well as the handles, head tube, and wheels. It's cute. My only complaint is that even though the frame is lightweight (made out of aluminum) the back end is a little on the heavy side, which isn't a problem unless you have to carry the bike up several flights of stairs. This is a great around town bike that would also work for light fitness on paved trails.

Read on for five of Kelly's best tips for making your kids' rooms organized, creative, and playful spaces that can grow along with them.

Kelly Edwards's 5 Pieces of Design Advice That Every Mom Can Put to Use

On Space Saving and Storage: Look for furniture pieces that your kids are going to grow into. Stay away from the typical bins and baskets, and instead opt for some really cool furniture for a more put-together look. Whether it's a midcentury modern credenza that's been in your family for years or a thrift-shop find, not all furniture has to scream "kids!"
On Coordinating With the Rest of Your Home: Your kids' rooms are where you can really have some fun. Visitors will judge your home on your kitchen and your bathroom. They're not the ones spending time in the bedrooms, you and your children are. Turn their rooms into places for creativity, and don't be afraid to try out that fun paint color.
On Trends: Remember, it's just $20 or so for a can of paint, so wall colors are a great place to try out a trend like neon. If that scares you, get a giant canvas, and paint that instead of the wall. Tack their artwork up on it. It'll add a splash of color to the room without your having to worry about repainting.
On Making the Most of Small Spaces: Look for ottomans with removable tops - you can stash everything in there! In a nursery that doubles as a guest room, put a twin bed in there along with your crib, but be sure to buy an upholstered box spring with drawers built in, so that you have extra storage without the boxes and bins showing.
On DIY With Kids: A fun DIY project that your kids can partake in is to find an old TV armoire and paint it with chalkboard paint, which you can either buy at the store or make yourself by mixing a cup of latex paint with two tablespoons of unsanded tile grout. The armoire becomes a great storage piece, and the chalkboard paint turns it into a piece of furniture that they can really have fun with.

Showtime Announces Reality Series About the San Francisco Giants!

Things just keep getting better for the 2010 World Series champions, the San Francisco Giants! The Bay Area baseball team is going Hollywood - today at the Winter TCA, Showtime president David Nevins announced a new unscripted series that will follow the San Francisco Giants over a 10-month period, documenting them from Spring training to the regular baseball season. Showtime is teaming up with Major League Baseball productions to portray the lives of the players as they defend their World Series title during the 2011 season. We had our own ideas for which actors could play the winning ball club, but seeing Linsecum and Brian Wilson as their quirky selves is even better!

We were pretty surprised when it was announced that Ashton Kutcher would play Steve Jobs in a biopic about the Apple founder, but seeing is believing.
