MoonWalk - Uniting Against Breast Cancer

Walk the Walk is a charity committed to raising money and awareness for breast cancer research and cancer care. They are also passionate about encouraging women and men to become healthier, fitter, and to take charge of their own well being.

One of their fundraisers is called the MoonWalk. It's taking place on June 16, 2007, in Edinburgh, Scotland. Not only are the men and women power walking throughout the entire night, they are doing it wearing decorated bras to raise awareness for breast cancer.

You can go to their website to register.

Fit's Tips: If you won't be in Scotland for the MoonWalk, you can still help raise money for breast cancer. Host your own fundraiser event and donate all the proceeds to the Breast Cancer Fund.

Want to see a video about "The Moonlight Walk to Kingsley Vale." Then read more

They're not in their bras, but they are walking through the night to raise money for diagnostic equipment for breast cancer.

Run Before Your Feast: Turkey Trot

My new Thanksgiving motto is, "Burn your pie to earn your pie." And that's burn as in calories. According to Runner's World, the amount of calories burned running a 5k is quite similar to the calories found in a slice of pumpkin pie. I thought that little comparison might inspire you to sign up for a Thanksgiving Day race, aka a Turkey Trot.

Many running clubs host these events in neighborhoods and suburbs not considered typical race venues. High school cross country teams also sponsor these fun runs as fundraising events. And let me tell you, not only are they fun, but they're a great way to start your day.

You can find an event near you at Active.com. If you're lucky, you might even get a cool race t-shirt like these from my last two fun runs on T-day. And don't forget to join the RunningSugar Group, where hard-core runners and newbies dish about the delights of running. Tell me, are you racing on T-day?

Operation Jack

This bit of training inspiration comes from jennsteria, part of RunningSugar.

Operation Jack

I remember one of my friends calling me crazy for my whopping 3 marathon (so far) schedule for next year. How about 60 marathons in 2010? Well, that's not something I think I am anywhere close to being able to do, but Sam Felsenfeld sure is. He'll be ending 2009 with four Boston qualifying marathons under his belt while ramping up for next year - crazy right?! His 60 marathons in 2010 plan (with seven marathons in January) is an attempt to raise awareness for a great cause, Train 4 Autism. This is a cause that is near and dear to Sam and his family. The plan is simple: they are basically looking for people to sign up for any of the races that Sam will be running under the running team "Operation Jack." That's it. You can fundraise if you want, but what they're really aiming for is participation. I've already joined the Operation Jack team for three races next year (looking to add at least three more). If you want, I suggest taking a look at Sam's schedule and joining too. Who doesn't love running for a great cause?

What inspires you to run? Join the conversation at RunningSugar. Have a post you want to see featured on FitSugar? Private message me here to pitch your ideas. I can't wait to hear them.

Jessica Biel to Climb Mt. Kilimanjaro

It looks like Jessica Biel is taking her recent roll of the earnest Salvation Army captain Sarah Brown in the musical Guys and Dolls to heart. She just volunteered to climb a mountain for charity.

We all know that Jessica Biel is no stranger to working out hard. We've seen the athletic actress running sprints at the track and doing crazy-hard boot camps. Well, Jess has signed on for a big adventure - climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, the tallest, free-standing mountain in the world. The climb is part of an awareness and fund-raising campaign for Summit on the Summit, a group dedicated to educating the public about the need for clean drinking water worldwide.

To see if JT will be joining her on the climb, just read more.

Jessica explained why she was joining the celebrity team of mountaineers, including Lupe Fiasco and Isabel Lucas, like this, "This is a basic human necessity that needs to be addressed now. [I want] to help any way I can in order to raise awareness toward the life-threatening clean-water crisis happening not only in Africa but around the world." On the boyfriend front, Justin told Jimmy Kimmel back in August that he was planning to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro and it sounds like he has been training for quite some time.

Sounds like a fun adventure and a great cause. Go, Jess go!

Get Outside and Play With Team Luna Chix

If you love working out in the great outdoors, but don't like going it alone, then check out Team Luna Chix.

There are 27 Luna Chix teams in over 20 cities in the US dedicated to biking (both mountain and road), running, swimming, and racing. The teams are diverse groups of women, including weekend warriors and serious competitors, who come together to train in a supportive environment and have fun doing it. As well as all the fun fitness activities, each independent chapter of the Luna Chix raises money for the Breast Cancer Fund.

Although these teams are the brain child of the company that makes Luna Bars, these teams are more like grass roots organizations. Team leaders organize group trainings as well as fundraisers, from 5k races to silent auctions, that benefit the BCF. Talk about a double incentive to exercise.

Find links to a handful of teams when you read more.

Think You're Tough Enough For the Tough Guy Challenge?

The day before the 43rd Super Bowl, the 24th annual Tough Guy Competition took place on an old horse farm just outside Birmingham, UK. On the last day of January, 3,000 contestants raced through 21 treacherous obstacles on a course eight "country miles" in length. The course is full of many tunnels, steep descents, barbed wire crawls, muddy swims, and of course trekking through fire.

The race is a fundraising event for the Mr. Mouse Farm for Unfortunates, which is home to hundreds of retired horses and provides job opportunities for young offenders. The race took place two days before snow storms crippled London, so the temperature was cold; over 600 contestants were treated for hypothermia. While the broken/dislocated bone count is only in the dozens, one contestant did break his neck, but there were no fatalities. James Appleton, a 28-year-old Cambridge student, won the race billed as "the safest most dangerous taste of physical and mental endurance pain in the world."

Interested in proving your mettle? You can compete in the Nettle Warrior event slated for July 26, or the next Tough Guy race in 2010. If you sign up early, the entrance fee is only 80 pounds. Personally, I would start training now. Be sure to check out the gallery of obstacles.

TLC = Touch Look Check

The more I write about breast cancer, the more I realize the face of the disease is getting younger and younger. Women under 30 are regularly diagnosed with breast cancer – it is no longer a post menopausal disease. I just found the Canadian organization Rethink Breast Cancer. Their focus is not only fundraising for research, but creating awareness about the disease, and their target demographic is women under 40.

As a fundraising event RBC just hosted The Boobyball and on October 26 they are hosting the Rethink Romp in Calgary. If the events were as fun as their names, I am sure they raised a lot of dough.

Here is a PSA they have produced to remind you to check your girls. It will definitely give you a feel for the organization.

Remember: TLC = Touch. Look. Check. When was the last time you did a self-breast exam?

Run a Turkey Trot Before You Eat Pie

My Thanksgiving motto is, "Burn your pie to earn your pie." And by "burn" I don't mean charring your pumpkin or apple pie; I mean burn as in to burn calories. According to Runner's World, the amount of calories burned running a 5k is quite similar to the calories found in a slice of pumpkin pie. I thought that little comparison might inspire you to sign up for a 5k Turkey Trot.

Many running clubs host these events in neighborhoods and suburbs that aren't typical race venues. High school cross country teams also sponsor these fun runs as fundraising events. And let me tell you, they are not only fun, but they are great way to start your day.

You can find an event near you at Active.com, or try the race finder over at Runner's World. If you're lucky, you might even get a cool race t-shirt like mine from last year.

ACTivism: Hike For Discovery

There are many fun running and walking fundraising events, but Hike For Discovery seems to be a one of a kind opportunity. Backpacking for three days and two nights in the back country to fight leukemia sounds like a memorable experience. Challenging yourself to climb, hike and camp while raising money for an excellent cause is a win-win situation in my book.

The money raised through Hike For Discovery goes to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society who fund research for a cure for leukemia and other cancers of the blood. After training for 14 to 18 weeks, you will hike in amazing destinations, like the Grand Canyon or Yosemite. Hike For Discovery organizes the trip, provides you with coaching and skills like first aid training, as well as a year membership to the American Hiking Society. Raising funds is not as difficult as you think, since Hike For Discovery assigns you an area fundraising mentor for support as well as a helpful web page.

To see if there is a local chapter near you, click here. If you are interested sign up now because spaces are limited!
