Multifunctional foods are all the rage, like cholesterol-reducing milk, which is good for your heart and your bones. I just read about a new chocolate fortified with omega-3 fatty acids, the fat that is beneficial to your health but lacking in most American's daily diet. Maramor Dark Chocolate is high in antioxidants, but one square also supplies 105 milligrams blend of omega-3 fats with only 50 calories.

Functional foods take on cholesterol...
Unilever has 150 clinical studies showing that two grams of plant sterols a day can lead to a 15% reduction in cholesterol backing up its new Promise Activ SuperShot Yogurt. Plant sterols are found in many fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and vegetable.

A lot of us (including me, guilty as charged) are shelling out extra cash for so called functional foods.
Functional food are foods that do more than just feed your hunger, they offer the promise of allowing you to be more regular, get full with extra antioxidants or drop your levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol. New studies are finding that these foods may not be worth the extra cash (about a third more per serving extra), if you're already getting a healthy diet rich in fiber.

I love yogurt and am fascinated by functional foods. Now I know probiotics might be trendy, but this healthy bacteria seems to benefit many people with digestive issues.
I was curious to try Yo-Plus by Yoplait ($3.50 / 4 pack).

While small amounts of salt are necessary for the body to function normally, too much sodium in the diet contributes to high blood pressure, so you should do your best to avoid taking in too much. A woman shouldn't exceed more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium a day. You may be thinking you don't need to worry because you never sprinkle salt on your food, but many pre-made foods already contain high amounts of sodium.

There must be 50 ways to love your liver, but to truly love something you have to know what it is all about. Right?
Well, what impresses me most about the liver is not that it is the largest internal organ of the body, but that it performs over 5,000 functions.

I worry about getting enough calcium, fiber, and iron, but iodine? I've never once given it thought until I read an article saying that iodine is critical when it comes to losing weight. Even though it's a trace mineral, meaning we don't need very much of it, it's important for our overall health because it's needed for metabolism and normal thyroid functioning.

Dear Fit,
I never eat fish, so I worry about getting enough omega-3s. Before I start taking supplements, I wanted to know which is the better choice, flaxseed oil or fish oil capsules?
—Unsure About Omegas
I'm glad you're focusing on getting enough omega-3s, since this essential fatty acid is so beneficial to our health.

It amazes me how many different variations there are on the water theme. There's tap water, filtered water, bottled water, sparkling water, Vitaminwater, Fruitwater, Fruit2O, and now Function Water. The bottle says it's "vapor distilled water + electrolytes."

When the mineral zinc comes to mind, I mostly link it with fighting colds. While it's true that it helps support a healthy immune system, that's not all zinc does. It's essential for cell division and the synthesis of DNA and protein.
