The Skinny On: Resistant Starches

"Feel full foods", developed by companies like Slim-Fast and Kraft, are scientifically proven to make you feel like you've eaten a large meal when you have, in fact, only eaten a 200 calorie snack.

How do they do that? They manipulate the fat molecules to stay intact until they reach the lower part of the small intestine. At that point, the manipulated molecules spark a whole bunch of hormones to send an "I'm full" message to the brain. These "resistant starches" act like fiber, but have the taste and texture of starch. They slow down digestion, so you feel full longer. Eating these kinds of food could decrease fat accumulation in the long-term. Wow.

Resistant starches can also be used to boost a product’s fiber level “label value” so the product can claim to be a “good” or "excellent” source of fiber, when it doesn't actually contain "natural" fiber, so be on the look out.

Eating good old fashioned real foods that actually contain fiber naturally are your best bet. Foods like beans, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables will make you feel full naturally without the scientifically modified flare.

Fit's Tip: Eat fruit at every meal. Apples, bananas, oranges, pears and berries are good sources of fiber. Why not slice some into your dinner salad?

Sarah Michelle Gellar Meets With Military Moms and Talks a Possible New Addition to Her Family

Sarah Michelle Gellar was on hand at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, CA, this morning for Operation Shower. The actress played host at the event, which honored military moms whose husbands are currently deployed, and capped things off by giving each woman in attendance a new crib. The free furniture came from Pottery Barn Kids, the organization SMG was representing in her role today. We had a chance to chat with the Ringer star and mom during the festivities. Sarah Michelle told us it was the second baby shower she's thrown this week, having also hosted a soiree for her best friend, who joined her for today's celebration.

Many of the women in attendance today were expecting, and we asked Sarah Michelle if her 2-year-old daughter with Freddie Prinze Jr., Charlotte, has been asking for a little brother or sister lately. She told us her toddler is actually much more focused on bringing home a kitten than a new baby! Unfortunately, SMG told us she's allergic to cats but says a pet could still likely be the next addition to their family of three. Michelle Smith showed a fun collection brimming with color and cool techno fabrics for Milly's Fall line. The results? A prim and polished collection injected with modern fabrics and a bit of edge. Tweed dresses were given a shiny finish thanks to a high-tech laminated finish, while full leather skirts lend a feminine feel. A wide array of cocktail-ready dresses were the main focus, ranging from scalloped hemlines to strapless neon and lace confections. We're inching steadily closer to the Oscars, which means it's time to start planning for the big night! If you're going to tune in, why not invite over a few friends and host a festive bash? If you're pulling for George Clooney, best picture nominee The Descendants is a perfect place to draw some inspiration, especially if you're one to dream of tropical climates. Here are a few tips for planning your luau, and don't forget to fill out a ballot with your Oscar picks for a chance to win an iPad.

How to decorate: Hawaii plays a huge role in the film, so go all out! Lots of flowers (real or fake) in splashy colors will punch up your place, and fake palm trees will add a nice touch. If you want to go the extra mile, set up an indoor kiddie pool and float lilies and candles on it. For additional seating, use beach chairs or even towels.
How to dress: Clooney's character Matt dresses almost exclusively in silly Hawaiian shirts, so those are a must (the uglier, the better). His daughter Alex (Shailene Woodley) spends most of her time in a bikini, which you can cover up with jean shorts and a button-down. If it's too cold for Summer clothes in your neck of the woods, a lei should suffice.
What to serve: Pretty-colored cocktails with umbrellas (think daiquiris, Mai Tais, and pi·ña coladas). If you want to go full throttle, a suckling pig would show your commitment to the theme, or you can go with a pineapple upside-down cake.

We can always count on Oscar de la Renta for red-carpet perfect dresses and the most elevated execution of ladylike wares, and this season was no exception to the rule. Marked by a definitive nod to the refined woman, Oscar upped his fantasy fashion quotient with a collection positively dripping in jewels. Teardrop-shaped pearl earrings, antique-inspired brooches, embellished sheaths, satin-and-diamante headbands, and even jewel-print graphics popped up on the runway. In addition to the dazzle factor, the designer honed in on updating his classic tweed jackets, perfectly tailored circle skirts, and "ladies who lunch" suits for both the younger, daring crew and the more sophisticated set. He adorned dresses with long pastel-hued feathers, added long, chunky cable-knit cardigans for a casual feel, and polished off looks with bejeweled leather belts. And as any fairy-tale show must end, Oscar delivered stunning, princess-worthy, or in this case - Academy Awards-worthy - ball gowns. These frothy, ethereal creations boasted full skirts, slightly drawn up in front like theater curtains, and off-the-shoulder necklines, and of course, they have "A-list" written all over them.
