4 Healthy Frozen Yogurt Combos to Try This Summer

Back in the good ol' days, friendly frozen yogurt servers would stingily add toppings to your yogurt for you. But now, self-serve frozen yogurt venues have become ever popularized. It's so easy to go overboard with the toppings, especially with the variety of candies and cookies that are accessible. That which once was a 150 calorie snack can easily become a huge indulgence loaded with calories and fat. Good news! Here are a few delectable yet controlled combos under 200 calories that you can try next time you're craving a sweet snack.

Blueberry Crumble (180 calories)

1/2 cup tart nonfat frozen yogurt

1/4 cup blueberries

2 Tbsp. of granola

Blueberries are loaded with fiber, vitamin C, and antioxidants; and granola contains complex carbs that will make you feel full and satisfied.

For more topping combinations, keep reading

An Easy Summer Treat: Mixed Berry Yogurt Popsicles

With only one month of berry season remaining, I've been buying strawberries and blueberries in flats. And while I do a pretty good job at finding ways to eat them all, sometimes there really is too much of a good thing. In the weeks that I have too many ripe berries, I freeze them to use later in the Fall and Winter, or make jam. Last week on an incredibly hot day, I experimented in the kitchen to make my own mixed berry yogurt frozen treats. This treat is sweet, creamy, and best of all, a healthy way to cool down this Summer.

Disclaimer: this is a very loose recipe - so loose that I can't even call it a recipe. I had a bunch of ripe berries that I blended with some nonfat Greek yogurt and sugar. The finished mixture was based strictly on personal taste. If you need a gauge, ask yourself if you'd enjoy drinking the mix on its own, much like a smoothie. If yes, freeze away! Pour the berry yogurt mixture into a clean ice cube tray, add some toothpicks and freeze. It doesn't have to stop there either. Since the first batch, I've experimented with different berry combos, and thrown in fresh mint and lemon juice too. Whatever the combo, this treat is a big hit in my house!

Make It: Chocolate Sorbet

Hot times call for cooling treats. This is one of my all-time favorite recipes for Summer. Once you taste this you will be amazed that there is no cream in it. It is just pure chocolate goodness. Now, chocolate and sorbet may not be categorized as health food, but this is definitely a great alternative to many frozen desserts out there. Plus, the flavor is so intense and satisfying you really only need half a scoop to cure your chocolate craving.

If you don't believe me, make it for yourself and see. It is a chocolate-lover's summertime dream.

Chocolate Sorbet
from Epicurious and The Perfect Scoop

What You Need
2 1/4 cups (555 ml) water
1 cup (200 g) sugar
3/4 cup (75 g) unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa powder
Pinch of salt
6 ounces (170 g) bittersweet or semisweet chocolate, finely chopped
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

What You Do

In a large saucepan, whisk together 1 1/2 cups (375 ml) of the water with the sugar, cocoa powder, and salt. Bring to a boil, whisking frequently. Let it boil, continuing to whisk, for 45 seconds.

Remove from the heat and stir in the chocolate until it's melted, then stir in the vanilla extract and the remaining 3/4 cup (180 ml) water.

Transfer the mixture to a blender and blend for 15 seconds.

Chill the mixture thoroughly (about 4 hours).

Freeze mixture in your ice cream maker according to the manufacturer's instructions. If the mixture has become too thick to pour into your machine, whisk it vigorously to thin it out. Or if you chill it in a blender, just re-blend for 5 to 10 seconds.

Print recipe with images | without images

Cool Off With Mango Mint Sorbet
Original recipe

I love during the summer months to pick up a couple extra pounds of fruit and pull out the ice cream maker. Sorbets are great to make since the fruit is in season, you barely have to add any sugar to them since they are naturally sweet. I actually halved the amount of simple syrup for my mango mint sorbet! You can taste the mixture before you freeze it to make sure it is to your liking but every bite of this sorbet is refreshing and scrumptious.

Ingredients

3-4 mangoes
1/2 cup Sugar
1/4 cup water
3 tablespoons fresh lime juice, or to taste
1/8-1/4 mint, finely chopped

Directions

Mix sugar and water together in a small pan, over medium heat dissolve the sugar. Set the simple syrup aside to cool.

Remove the flesh from the mangoes and place in a blender. Blend until smooth. Slowly add the simple, lime juice and mint

Allow the mixture to cool and follow your ice cream maker instructions.

Place the sorbet in a large bowl in the freezer and allow it to freeze completely about 4-6 hours.

Makes 5 cups.

A Treat From the FitSugar Community: Blueberry Frozen Yogurt

Cool off lightly with this frozen yogurt recipe FitSugar member Nestingproject shared in our Healthy Recipe community group.

This recipe I created because I love Greek yogurt, I love blueberries and I love cold things when it's hot. It's really not rocket science.

Now, if you need me I'll be at the gym torturing myself in Step Class.

Blueberry Frozen Yogurt
2 cups 0% Greek Yogurt
Cup frozen blueberries thawed (if in season use fresh)
1/4 cup sugar or Honey
Juice of 1/2 a lemon

Directions:
Blend the blueberries, honey/sugar and lemon juice in a blender/food processor, then in a bowl mix the puree and the yogurt together and pour into your ice cream maker.

Enjoy after a hard workout or as a snack . . . Look forward to looser clothes.

Have a cool, low cal treat you love? Feel free to share it in the Healthy Recipe Group. We're always looking for new fun foods to try.

I'm big on frozen yogurt, since it's a healthier bet than ice cream. With three frozen yogurt stops within a 10-block radius of my house, I've started to do a little comparison shopping - by nutritional information - and was surprised to learn that there are some major differences in my frozen yogurt options, even when they're all nonfat. Take the quiz to see how much you know about the sweet treat.

One of my guilty Summer pleasures is a Baskin Robbins shake. <strike>Foolishly</strike> Wisely I glanced at the nutritional information for the shakes and will probably be opting for a small cone from here on out.
Snack Attack: Frozen Peanut Butter Banana

Even though it is cold outside, and maybe even because of the cold, I crave ice cream. To satisfy my sweet (and cold) tooth I reach for a frozen banana filled with peanut butter.

Here's how you make it:

Take a very ripe banana, since frozen foods tend to be less sweet, slice it almost in half lengthwise. Make sure to not cut the banana all the way in two.

Put your favorite kind of peanut butter inside the banana. I like salted and crunchy.

Wrap the stuffed banana tightly in plastic wrap and freeze for 3 or more hours.

Unwrap and eat.

Why we love it:
Bananas are high in potassium, vitamin C and vitamin B6.
Peanut Butter is a good source of protein.
It is frozen so it takes a while to eat and eating more slowly increases the satisfaction. Plus it is a great ice cream substitute.
