I'm ready to celebrate the Fourth of July, but must admit I am not a fan of the noise that accompanies fireworks — lovely as they may be. Those booming sounds can really damage the delicate structures in your ears; once they're damaged, they never regenerate and can't be repaired. This condition is known as noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL).

Fourth of July is all fun and games — until someone gets food poisoning! OK, while that may not be your biggest concern this holiday, don't forget food safety when making salads and moving meat from the kitchen to the 'cue. Here are a few important rules to remember.

To many of us, the Fourth of July means stuffing our faces at a barbecue with family and friends. No major harm done since it only rolls around once a year.
However, take a few pointers from seriously toned Matthew McConaughey (and his party pals Jeremy Piven and Woody Harrelson) and offset all those extra calories (think beer and s'mores) you're taking in with a few fun activities for everyone to do.

Smoking and Skin Damage
- The skin of smokers ages more rapidly than the skin of non-smokers, even in areas of the body not exposed to sunlight, according to a 2007 study. Women in the study who smoked also had much lower levels of vitamin E secretions in their skin. Vitamin E may protect the skin from sun damage.
- There may be an association between smoking and higher frequency of a type of acne (noninflammatory acne) in adult women, according to a European study.
Antioxidants and Your Skin
- A study in the Journal of Nutrition found that a combination of antioxidants and trace elements supplementation raises the risk of skin cancer in women, but not in men.
Ultraviolet Radiation
- Overall, exposure to ultraviolet radiation from sunlight (radiation referred to as UVA or UVB) accounts for about 90% of the symptoms of premature skin aging.
- UVB primarily affects the outer skin layers.

Ovarian Cancer Symptoms
Even early-stage ovarian cancer can produce symptoms, according to a 2007 consensus statement issued by the American Cancer Society, the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation, and the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists. Because ovarian cancer can grow very rapidly, early detection is extremely important. Contact your doctor (preferably a gynecologist) if you experience these symptoms on a daily basis for more than a few weeks:
- Bloating
- Pelvic or abdominal pain
- Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly
- Urgent or frequent urination
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) Increases Ovarian Cancer Risk
- Post-menopausal women who use hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for more than 5 years are 20% more likely to develop ovarian cancer than women who do not use HRT, suggests a 2007 study in the Lancet.
