There's no sugar coating this: India has more people suffering from hunger than
any other country in the world. More than 200 million don't get enough to eat, and according to the 2008 Global Hunger Index just released, not one of India's 17 states rank in the low- or moderate-hunger categories — and 12 states have rank "alarming." India is 66th out of 88 countries surveyed (a stat in itself that makes you think of those 22 other countries that are worse.)
Kids bear a lot of the brunt of the hunger crisis — numbers released two years ago showed that even then, more than half of the children in India were malnourished.

I don't think it is possible to listen to the news without becoming at least somewhat stressed. First there is the economy, then more bad news from the Middle East, anxiety about the upcoming presidential election, and in my neck of the woods, fires. Many people reach for carbohydrate-rich foods when they are stressed, and often sugary ones at that.

I was perusing the October issue of
Shape and found an interesting tip in one of their dinner recipes. They suggested boiling your pasta noodles with bags of
green tea. I thought it was a little odd at first, but then I read that it actually makes your pasta healthier because the noodles soak up the rich antioxidants from the tea.

There are many reasons to start eating lower on the food chain. My top three are my health, my finances, and the
environment. I think there are many other reasons to start choosing tofu over a hamburger, at least once a week.

I think the easiest breakfast option in the world is a bowl of
cereal. But just because it is an easy option, doesn't mean it has to be unhealthy. I like starting my day off with a cereal that is high in fiber; it helps keep me full and helps me reach the recommended 30 gram mark for daily intake of fiber.

OK, OK, I've got a sweet tooth. I could pass up fries or other savory snack, but show me a cupcake or some ice cream . .

The
ads promoting high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) that are airing on TV irritate me to no end and I know they bother a few of you as well. The
controversy surrounding the ad campaign, which is estimated to cost around $20 to $30 million, continues to grow. The basic premise of the ads is that HFCS is natural since it is made from corn (they don't mention how processed the syrup truly is) and that it is just like sugar.

Variety is the spice of life and that is true when it comes to veggies too. Presentation is important and shredded carrots seem exotic and interesting compared to the commonplace sliced preparation. Here are some of my favorite kitchen gadgets for creating fun and enticing veggies.

Not only does overeating make you digestive system work overtime, but it also does a doozy on your brain.
American scientists recently found that overeating stimulates a usually dormant immune pathway in the brain. Once stimulated the brain then sounds the alarm for the immune system to battle invaders that aren't really there.

We are visual creatures, and all these food labels or stamps have been created to help us recognize by sight healthy features of our food. Do you know what these labels mean when the words that accompany the image have been pixilated beyond recognition? Take this quiz and see.
