Everyday Nutrition Shakes

Dr. Jana Klauer, author of the new book How the Rich Get Thin: Park Avenue's Top Diet Doctor Reveals the Secrets to Losing Weight and Feeling Great has created ready-to-drink Everyday Nutrition shakes.

Everyday Nutrition shakes are supposed to be a tool for weight loss because they contain high quality whey protein and calcium - two proven ingredients for weight loss and with only 180 calories, 20 grams of protein and 400 mg of calcium, the 11 ounce drink packs a powerful punch. One reason why I actually like this product is because the shakes contain omega-3 fatty acids which has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer and depression. The shakes are available in rich (no pun intended) cocoa and vanilla bean.

I am also pleased that the shakes do not contain artificial appetite suppressants, which is common in 'diet' shakes. Dr. Klauer's site says, "Everyday Nutrition shakes will supply nutrients your body needs to lose weight safely and efficiently, but they are not designed to replace food entirely." Giving the shakes another bonus point in my book.

Sounds like something you want to try? Buy the shakes from Janeklauermd.com, but buyer beware: These shakes are not your typical protein shake as a pack of 24 will set you back $114.00.

I guess if you live on Park Avenue, $114 is just a drop in the hat.

A Daily Look at How Much Fat, Sugar, and Salt You Should Be Eating

You may think your diet is right on track, but do you know how much fat, sugar, and salt you should be eating on an everyday basis? In honor of National Nutrition Month, we're taking a look at the dietary guidelines for some of the sneakiest health spoilers. Learn the recommended daily intake for fat, sugar, and salt based on a 2,000 calories-per-day diet and try to adjust your habits accordingly:

Fat: The American Heart Association suggests that people consume 500 to 700 calories from fat each day, somewhere between 56 to 78 grams (or 25 to 35 percent of your total daily calories). Don't think of fat as the bad guy, though. Instead, try to eat more healthy fats, found in foods like nuts, avocado, and olive oil. You should also limit your saturated fat intake to less than 16 grams and keep unhealthy trans fats to less than two grams per day.

Sugar: It's recommended that women eat 100 calories from added sugars each day, just five percent of their daily diet. Wondering what 100 calories of sugar looks like? About six teaspoons. That may seem like a lot, but sugar tends to turn up in some surprising sources, like bread and yogurt, so educate yourself on the sweet culprits and learn how to cut back on sugar. Since nutrition labels list both naturally occurring and added sugars, check the ingredient list for a more detailed account of which kind of sugars a food item may have; anything containing fruit or dairy will contain natural sugars.

Salt: The recommended daily intake of salt is 1,500 milligrams to 2,300 milligrams (about a teaspoon), depending on your risk factors. Less than you expected? The overconsumption of sodium is linked to high-blood pressure and a range of other health issues, so monitor your salt intake and follow these tips to limit sodium.

Scrutinizing the amount of fat, sugar, and salt in every food you eat isn't realistic, but it's important to learn the proper health guidelines so you can aim for the recommended totals. Not sure where to start? Try checking the labels on some of your favorite foods to kick-start your awareness and tailor your nutrition as needed.

5 Simple Ways to Go Raw

Raw foodies argue that heating your food past 115 degrees F destroys the important enzymes found in fruits and vegetables, and by killing these enzymes we're decreasing the nutritional value of our food. These fragile enzymes help us properly and thoroughly digest our foods so we can absorb the vitamins and minerals in our tasty vittles. While I don't think I have the discipline, or the burning desire really, to go raw, I do like taking advantage of the abundance of amazing produce available in the Summer to cook less. And well, go a little raw.

We all know that eating salads and snacking on fresh fruit are great ways to incorporate raw foods into our everyday diets, but let's think outside the box. There is more you can do with lettuce than eat it doused in dressing. Here are five ways to get more raw veggies into your diet.

We all know about snacking on carrots and celery, but try snacking on cherry or grape tomatoes. I know that technically tomatoes are a fruit, but we think of them as savory. Eat them raw in the Summer and chances are high you will begin to think of them as nature's candy. My favorite variety is Sun Gold; they're a vibrant orange and bursting with flavor.

I am a fan of adding roasted beets to my salads, but raw beets are great on greens too. Try shredding raw beets on your salad for extra color, fiber, and nutrients. I also enjoy a raw shredded carrot and beet salad with a ginger dressing. The beet juice stains the carrots a lovely hot pink - it's a vibrant dish.

Keep reading for three more ideas.

The Best Way to Satisfy Post-Workout Hunger

We are excited to share one of our fave stories from Shape here on FitSugar. This week Shape turned to nutritional consultant Mike Roussell, PhD, for some help!

Q: I'm starving after my workout! What can I do to stop that or to avoid canceling out the calories I just burned? -Regina Castillo, Facebook

A: It may seem a little counterintuitive, but immediately after your workout is the best time of day to eat, so even if you're not starving, you should still eat something.

The good news is that you can't cancel out the calories you just burned during your workout. Weight loss and the human body don't work like that. When you're working out, your body burns fat to be used as energy. If you eat right after your workout, those calories won't be used to replace the burned body fat. Your body only stores food as body fat when it doesn’t have anything else to do with the extra calories you eat. After your workout, your body needs to start restoring and repairing itself from your training session. In other words, it needs calories.

The calories you eat after your workout will be used to replace energy stores in your muscles that got used up during your training session. Your body also uses any protein you eat to build and repair your muscles that were broken down as a result of you pushing them to their limits.

Add Flaxseed Oil to Everyday Food

Flaxseed oil is a great way to get your daily dose of omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids are beneficial for us because they are good for our hearts and our mood, they may lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and can help with menstrual cramps. Flaxseed is high in alpha linolenic acid (ALA), a type of plant-derived omega-3 fatty acid, similar to those found in fish such as salmon.

It's key to have a good balance of both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in your daily diet. Unfortunately, the typical American diet tends to contains more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids, and researchers believe that this may be a significant factor in the rising rates of inflammatory diseases in the United States.

Flaxseed oil can be added to everyday dishes and snacks like salad dressing, steamed vegetables, potatoes, and rice. Since you can't really taste it, you can also use it in the morning in fruit smoothies or oatmeal - just don't go overboard! Also, never use flaxseed oil while cooking and store it in the fridge since heat destroys its nutritional goodness.

Along with sharing many of her healthy habits here on FitSugar, Alexa will be creating a personalized nutrition plan for the lucky winner of our Get Fit For 2009 giveaway, which includes many other amazing goodies like a $1000 gift card for Nike gear.

Now here's what Alexa has to say about water:
One of the best things you can do for yourself this 2009 is to make a pact to drink water with every meal. Skip the soda and juice and instead enjoy a tall glass of water, carbonated or flat, with or without ice, and maybe with a twist of lemon or lime. Making this a habit will go a long way toward reducing dehydration, constipation, and everyday bloating.

Not sure how much water you should be drinking? Check out the FitSugar calculator to figure out how to keep yourself hydrated.

Source
