Dear FitSugar,
Since you have been covering a lot of ground on sodium and potassium, I heard that sodium and potassium levels compete with each other, so if the presence of one mineral rises, the amount of the other drops. Is that true?
I thought this was an interesting question, but a little out of my league, so I asked my friend, nutritionist Rania Batayneh, MPH of Essential Nutrition For You.

Do you know how many calories you can allow in a day for snacking? What should a snack consist of nutrition wise?

March is National Nutrition Month (here are some quizzes to test your nutritional knowledge) and since the month is about to go "out like a lamb" I thought a short interview with a nutritionist would be a great way to end our celebration of the month.
I met with nutritionist Rania Batayneh, MPH, of Essential Nutrition For You. I had a lot of questions for her and she in turn had some really great answers.

There is so much nutritional information out there to process and at times it just gets overwhelming. Since, March is National Nutrition month I thought I would go see a nutritionist to help me weed through all the information and get some personalized info too. Let me tell you it was a pretty cool experience.

Biologic Drugs
- In February 2007, the FDA approved adalimumab (Humira) for treatment of adult patients with moderate-to-severe Crohn’s disease. Adalimumab and infliximab (Remicade) are now the two biologic drugs approved for Crohn’s disease. Infliximab is approved for treating both adults and children.
- As of August 2007, the FDA was considering approving natalizumab (Tysabri) for moderate-to-severe Crohn’s disease in patients who have not responded to, or cannot tolerate, other therapies.

General Dietary Guidelines
- In 2006, the American Heart Association (AHA) revised its dietary and lifestyle recommendations. The new guidelines specifically recommend limiting daily saturated fat intake to less than 7% and trans fats to less than 1% of total daily calories.
- The AHA recommends consuming plenty of deep-colored vegetables and fruits, eating oily fish at least twice a week, and including whole grains in your daily diet.
Fish
- Women with existing heart disease may consider taking fish oil supplements, suggests 2007 AHA guidelines. Women should include a variety of low-mercury fish in their diet.
