Strike a Yoga Pose: Eagle

Many people take up yoga as a way to relax, reduce stress, and bring a sense of inner calmness. For me, balancing poses are the most effective at reducing the stresses of life because they require so much attention and focus that I'm forced to forget about everything else. Staying in the pose and not falling requires all your effort and concentration. Once you release the pose, you feel an amazing wave of relief and contentment. This particular balancing pose is also great for stretching out your calves, ankles, hips, and upper back.

If you sit at a computer all day or find yourself behind the wheel for extended periods of time, no doubt you've experienced a tight upper back. Well I have a fix for you, and it's a variation on the Eagle pose in yoga. Instead of holding the pose, you circle your arms in the entangled position, which makes for a glorious stretch.

Many people take up Yoga as a way to relax, reduce stress and bring a sense of inner calmness. For me, balancing poses are the most effective at reducing the stresses of life because they require all my attention and focus, that I am forced to forget about everything else. Staying in the pose and not falling requires all your effort and concentration. Once you release the pose, you feel an amazing wave of relief and contentment.

Here are some of my favorite balancing poses. Some of them solely challenge your sense of balance, and others also challenge your strength and flexibility. Just click on the name of the pose to learn how to get into them.

YOGA CHALENGE: Eagle

Here' the latest yoga challenge for you. It's a balancing pose called Eagle. It's great for stretching out your calves, ankles, hips, and upper back. When you're in it, you can imagine that you are perched high above the treetops, looking down upon the gorgeous world.

This is a powerful pose, but requires a calm stillness and a strong drishti to stay up.

Don't be shy - give it a try. I'm looking forward to seeing the photos you post in the YOGA CHALENGE Group.

Click on "Create and Share" on the left-hand side. Then click on "Blog." To add your picture, just click "Add image." Then click "Submit."

Start in Mountain pose (like you're getting ready to do Tree pose).
Shift all your weight into your left foot, and lift your right knee up towards your chest.
Cross your right knee in front of your left knee, and bend both knees slightly, trying to wrap your right toes around the back of your left calf.
Now, keeping your drishti on one point in front of you, cross your right elbow over your left elbow. (Some people cross their left elbow over their right). Work on bringing your right fingertips towards the base of your left palm, and then lift your elbows straight up towards the ceiling.
Stay here for 5 breaths and then do the other side.

The Eagle: A Battle to Stay Awake

Channing Tatum's Roman Empire drama The Eagle emerges beneath the shadow of many other battle epics before it. It begs the question: Can Tatum and his film possibly stack up against benchmarks like Russell Crowe's Gladiator? The movie capitalizes on the opportunity to attract a younger audience with Tatum and his costar Jamie Bell (all grown up since his Billy Elliott days), and with their requisite physiques and boyish exuberance, they intrepidly wield the swords and shields of the time.

Tatum stars as Marcus Aquila, an officer of the Roman army with a lot to prove. His father, an officer before him, had led his soldiers (the ninth legion) into battle in Northern England, never to be seen again. Lost with them was a golden emblem of an eagle, representing the legion and Rome's honor. The mystery surrounding the disappearance of the army unit haunts Marcus for multiple reasons: he grieves the loss of his father and bears the disgrace of his family's name. He's convinced that if he can search out and find the eagle, and figure out what happened to the lost legion, he'll restore his father's honor. It's a plot that may play out well in the novel the film is based on, The Eagle of the Ninth, but Marcus's personal quest isn't compelling on the big screen. read more. Due to the danger of the journey - the destination, Caledonia, was a deadly place for a Roman soldier in those times - Marcus brings just one companion, his slave Esca (Bell). Esca hails from the territory Marcus is about to infiltrate, and hates his master based on the Roman/Briton rivalry. However, once the men take on the perils of the expedition together and must resort to teamwork to survive an encounter with the savage "seal people," they forge a deep bond. It's a predictable development, but it's ultimately the movie's sole source of entertainment. The plot progression to this friendship is mind-numbingly boring; the film rolls along at a snail's pace, punctuated occasionally by battle scenes that are remarkably unexciting. Which brings me to the film's other major problem: the dialogue. The script is dumbed down so much that even though the story is easy to follow, you can't help but feel insulted. Beyond that, some lines are so cheesy my jaw dropped, including a closing exchange between the two main characters that feels lifted from an '80s buddy comedy. The Eagle tries hard to be an epic film, but the only thing epic about it is how dull it is.

Channing Tatum Books It to a London Signing

Channing Tatum and his costar in The Eagle, Jamie Bell, promoted their film's book in London yesterday. The duo premiered the movie in the UK on Wednesday following a quiet release at the US box office last month. Channing's overseas press tour also brought him onto some talk shows, where he revealed that shooting the movie in Scotland was the coldest he's ever been, but included some great whiskey as an upside. Channing has two other projects to look forward to with Haywire and Ten Year both coming out later this year and he's also working on getting a new Peter Pan prequel to the big screen.

Channing Flies High on The Eagle's UK Premiere

Channing Tatum joined his costars at the London premiere of The Eagle this evening, stopping to sign autographs for fans as he made his way into the theater. The battle epic opened in the States last month, but Channing and the film's other main man, Jamie Bell, just kicked off their UK press tour this week. Channing played an officer in the Roman army in the physically demanding period piece, and took advantage of the brief break between promotional duties to get surgery on his leg and recover close to home. The actor is overseas for now, but fans here can get a good look at him in the shirtless spread he posed for in the latest issue of GQ.
