Latest Exercise Trend: Ramping

I am always looking for a way to do something new, fitness wise. At one point, step aerobics was the latest thing, but that time has since come and gone. You'll still find step classes in almost every gym, but they are not nearly as popular as they once were.

Enter Ramping. I know it sounds a little odd but ramping is very similar to step aerobics (in fact it was created by the very same person that created step aerobics) but it is requires a lot less impact on your joints because instead of stepping up onto a flat step or bench, you lunge on and off an adjustable-incline ramp (half-moon looking contraption pictured above) specifically designed for ramping. Ramping is great for really working your butt and hamstrings. Great for getting those legs short shorts ready this summer. Check out the ramping site online for more information as well as to find a class near you.

Class Act: Punk Rope

I am always looking for ways to keep exercising interesting and it's not always been too easy but with the explosion of group classes, there are so many options.

My latest favorite is Punk Rope, a cross between third grade recess (double dutch y'all) and boot camp. Punk Rope combines conditioning drills, rope jumping and core and flexibility training for a very creative, effective, edgy workout. Been years since you picked up a jump rope? No worries, since rope jumping experience is not necessary for this class. Jump ropes are provided so that means one less thing to carry in your gym bag. Pig tails optional.

Right now Punk Rope is available at Healthworks, Boston's own group of women-only fitness centers. Don't live in the Boston area? Check your local gym for similar jump rope combo classes.

Class Act: Cardio Tai Boxing

I'm big on fitness classes, but tend to stick with Pilates, yoga, or something slower-paced - usually afraid that I won't be able to keep up with a class that requires any dance technique. My exercise solution came in the form of Crunch's Cardio Tai Box class - a class that gets you moving without a required-knowledge of dance choreography. All you need to know? How to punch and kick. Really.

In fact, once you master the basic kicks and three different kinds of punches, you'll easily catch on when the combinations are introduced - so don't psych yourself out if you can't keep up right away. The key throughout the workout is to focus on each individual action, fully extend your arms and legs for punches and kicks, and be conscious of your core - if you're flexing your abs throughout you'll notice improved balance and form that'll make leg extension easier for round-house and side-kicks.

To learn more about the class and see video, just read more.

Ultimately, you'll find that the high intensity that the class requires goes hand in hand with the kinds of moves you're doing - and throwing a few punches is sure to relieve stress or any aggression after a long day at work; it's hands-down my top choice for a workout to shake things up and re-energize mid-week. If you lag behind during round one, just go back and do it again, or pull aside your instructor after class to go over technique, this way, you'll be up to speed and blasting calories by round two in the cardio ring.

Class Act: Skinny Jeans Fitness Workout

I won't lie, the name caught my attention: Skinny Jeans Workout, a place where denim and my hamstrings collide. I find the fashion / fitness connection slightly amusing, but the 45 minute class left me more than slightly sweaty. It truly is a sculpting workout that borrows from a diverse array of fitness methods. We did lunges of all sorts, from the basic forward variety to the criss-crossing curtsy lunge. We did squat variations. We even did multiple Warrior 3s. My legs and glutes were worked from all angles ensuring that every fiber was taxed. There were sections of the workout that felt rather balletic too; these moves really worked the deep glute muscles that help lift the seat. The class kept moving, and my heart rate stayed pumping for most of the class. The first 35 minutes of the class are standing and there is an emphasis on standing tall and keeping your chest open, since part of looking good in your skinny jeans is postural. I have heard that slouching can make a person look 10 pounds heavier. The ab work is very Pilates based, with cuing to keep the abs pulled to the spine - a phrase you can't make it through a Pilates session without hearing repeatedly.

I will definitely take this class again and recommend it. This class is currently offered at many Equinox locations, but look for a version at a gym near you.

Class Act: African Dance

In the mood for something with a little more action than a chill jog in the park? Try out an African dance class. Classes are most often accompanied by live musicians, mostly drummers, so the energy practically busts through the roof. The drum beats are so contagious, you really can't help but kick your knees, flail your arms, and spin around. This type of movement feels exhilarating and freeing.

Don't worry if you have two left feet when it comes to dancing; start with a beginner class. There will be lines of people with an instructor in front leading you through a series of movements. I hung out in the last line my first few classes, and everyone was really supportive of the beginners. The trick is to not be embarrassed and just let yourself go, so you can have fun and burn more than 400 calories per hour.

Hopefully African dance classes are offered in your area because everyone should try it at least once. Wear comfortable clothes, bring water, and expect to pay about $10 to $20 for the class.

To see a video clip of class read more.

You Asked: Pilates Mat Class vs. Reformer Class

You're asking and I'm answering . . .
Hey Fit,
I think you have mentioned before that you are a Pilates instructor. I had a Pilates-related question and thought you might be a good person to ask. Is there a significant difference between the Pilates mat classes at a gym and sessions on a Reformer? My gym has both, and I was wondering if I should be springing for the reformer sessions. Are they really that much better?
– Powerhouse Patricia

Well, Patricia, both mat classes and Reformer sessions have their merits, but I must admit the Reformer is my favorite piece of Pilates equipment. So factor that into my explanation.

As I see it, the pros for a mat class are as follows:

Mat classes are less expensive since they are not equipment dependent.

Mat classes are easier to find, and studios and gyms offer them more frequently.

You can easily incorporate many mat class exercises into your fitness regimen.

Mat classes make you strong.

To see the reason I think Reformer classes are great, just read more

You work against spring resistance on the Reformer, which adds a whole new level of strength training to Pilates.

The springs also provide support for difficult exercises, thereby creating easier variations of mat exercises. This support means you can work muscle groups more deeply and specifically.

The Reformer is a very versatile machine, and the variations are endless, so you never get bored.

There are many exercises that incorporate standing on the Reformer and these exercise transfer more directly to your daily activities.

Working out on the Reformer will make you strong.

I think anyone that has ever taken a mat class would thoroughly enjoy and benefit from taking a Reformer class. I think they are worth the extra dough, and they will certainly deepen your understanding of Pilates and enrich your mat work as well.

Fit's Tip: Many gyms and studios offer group Reformer classes that are more expensive than mat classes but considerably cheaper than one-on-one sessions. Many studios require three to five privates sessions before taking group classes with equipment.

Source

Group Fitness Class: What's the Ideal Size For You?

Running alone can get a little lonely. Whether it's Nia, Zumba, or an Anusara Yoga class, I like the class size to have at least 15 people. Somehow that number of people moving at once inspires me to push myself hard. What about you?

You're asking and I'm answering...

Hey Fit! On several occasions I have taken a new group class and absolutely hated everything about it. In the future, is it OK that I don't stick around and waste my time?
- Classy Cassy

From time to time it happens that you'll find yourself in a class that just does not suit you. Maybe you don't vibe with the instructor or maybe it just wasn't the type of workout you were looking for at the time. Regardless of the reason for the class not being a good fit, as long as you are polite, it is OK to make a quiet, nonchalant exit.

The caveat: You should still try to push yourself. Don't allow yourself to leave class after class because you are out of your comfort zone. It's one thing to leave a body pump class because it is focusing on strength training and you were looking for a cardio workout, but it's another thing to walk out because it simply seemed a little difficult. Classes are a fabulous way to provide us with a social way to have fun, find variety and get instruction. Take advantage of them and push yourself. Besides, in the end you may find that you actually love the class.

Fit's Tip: Also, if you see the instructor outside the class, think about giving her some constructive feedback -- She may welcome the feedback.

Tips for Starting a New Fitness Class

When starting a new group exercise class, you should show up prepared to help make the class go as smoothly as possible so you can enjoy it and think about going back for round two.

Here are a few tips for being prepared for a new class:

Have an open mind. It's new and chances are it's going to be hard. Stick with it, and if you really hate the class, then it's alright to leave discreetly, but make sure that is your last resort.

Show up 5 to 10 minutes early. It's hard to jump into a class that's already begun, not to mention distracting for everyone else.

Bring water. Bring a big bottle of water since there may not be a water fountain close by.

Take off your good jewelry. One time I did a class where I had to do rounds of hitting the punching bag; the instructor was less than impressed when I had to pause to take off my rings and fasten them around my neck on my necklace.

Dress appropriately. Layers and clothing that move are always good for exercise classes. If you're going to be on your feet a lot (i.e. step classes, aerobics, boot camp) be sure to wear supportive sneakers.

Fit's Tip: The teacher's pet in me always likes to tell the instructor, "I am new to this, so bear with me." It just makes me feel a little more comfortable in hope that she won't pick on me or think I am slacking off.

Dancing With the Gym: Group Dance Classes

Dancing has really made its footprint in mainstream media. From Dancing With the Stars to J'Lo's Dancelife, we can't get enough of watching people dance on TV.

Gyms around the country are catching on to this theory and are offering dancing group classes to cater to our love of dancing.

Crunch alone has 40 or more dance related classes. Including Ballroom Blitz. Sashay the floor like Cheryl Burke and Drew Lachey in this heart-pumping, cardio class that combines classic ballroom formulas like swing, mergengue and foxtrot. No worries if you can't get a hot c-lister to be your partner, partners are not required.

Equinox is no stranger to dance classes either. They have classes like Rap-A-Tap, where you'll tap dance to Pop and Hip-Hop music. It's easy to follow, which means everyone can do it. Tap shoes (and top hat) optional. Or you can go more mainstream with Video Dance Jam, a class where you'll learn dance routines to the latest music videos.

For all you traditionalists out there Bally's Total Fitness offers Balletone/Ballet Sculpt, which is conditioning that incorporates exercises from traditional ballet choreography.

The Sports Club LA has a World Dance class that should awaken the mover, shaker or dancer within you. Soul dancing combines movement and music of varying cultures designed to blast away calories and you may even walk away feeling a little more cultured.

Not a member of any of the above clubs? See what classes are offered at your gym as I am positive they have some sort of dancing class too. Or you can check out the Dancing With the Stars Cardio Dance DVD at home.
