Roll Out! Foam Roller Massage

In these crazy economic times, it can be difficult to rationalize spending your hard earned cash on a massage, no matter how over worked your muscles are. If you push yourself in your workouts, you can still treat your body right with a DIY massage using a foam roller.

Costing anywhere between $10 to $25, a foam roller is cheaper than a visit to a spa, and you don't have to make an appointment. If you're already familiar with rolling out your IT band, here are five more massaging moves to try with a foam roller.

Fit Tip: Massage Your Feet and Lower Legs Before a Run

As you may well know, running is really tough on your feet and the muscles in your lower legs. These often neglected body parts do a lot of the work and absorb most of the shock of your run. Ignore them and you can end up with cramped, achy, throbbing, or even numb feet, shins, or calves from running, which not only sucks due to the pain, but can prevent you from getting in a good workout.

So before you slip on your socks and sneakers, give your feet and lower legs a good rub down. Spend a few minutes on each leg's foot, shin, and calf. Knead your fingertips and the heel of your palm firmly into your muscles to bring blood to those areas, which will warm the muscles up. If the muscles are warmed up, they'll be less likely to ache or get injured while running.

RX For Shin Splints: Ice Massage

Shin splints are the bane of many new runners. The tight calves that accompany mileage increases can spell pain for the lower leg. If running causes any discomfort, take time off to allow your shin splints to heal. But you need not sit idle on the sidelines while you recuperate: ice massages help, too. A serious runner, my Equinox trainer reminded me of the healing combo of ice and massage to decrease the inflammation around the tibia (anatomy speak for shin), caused by this overuse injury. The technique is simple, but first you need to make the ultimate tool: the icing cup!

Make Your Own Icing Cup
Used in gyms and physical therapy clinics, an icing cup protects your fingers from freezing and provides a perfectly sized contact point for massaging troubled spots. Take six Dixie cups, fill them with water, and freeze. When it comes time to ice, peel back the paper and begin the massage.

The Massage
Starting by your foot, place your icing cup on the outside of your shin, on the tibialis anterior muscle. Making long strokes toward your knee, massage the muscle with an amount of pressure that feels good. Mix up your massage strokes and try small circular patterns, once again starting at the ankle and working up toward the knee. After five minutes of massaging, finish your 20-minute icing cycle with 15 minutes of static icing by placing an ice pack (or frozen peas or corn) on your shin. Aim to massage and ice twice a day.

If you're not up for an ice massage, you can always show your shins some foam roller love. Do keep stretching your calf muscles, and once the pain diminishes try these easy exercises to strengthen the tibialis anterior.

We're happy to present this article from one of our favorite sites, Real Beauty.

A New York City salon is taking pity on the worn-out heels and arches of runners and crafting a pedicure that'll take into consideration their unique needs. Eve Salon in NYC's West Village neighborhood is offering its "Runner's Pedicure" just in time for Sunday's ING New York City Marathon. The speciality pedi keeps nails cut short to to avoid damage during high-intensity pavement-hitting and spends extra time on softening, but not removing, calluses (they're there for protection!). Runners can sneak a little massage into the salon chair, too: Each session comes equipped with a seven minute calf and foot rub.

Read More: 11 Treats for Feet

We thought stilettos were rough on our tootsies, but compared to 26.2 miles, it sounds like a bit of a cake walk. Sporty ladies, would you prep for the big day with an indulgent spa treatment or are you saving it for after the race is run?

How to Treat and Prevent Cramps While You Exercise

Cramps throughout the body can, at their least painful, distract you from your workout and at their worst can keep you from finishing a workout. While they are normally associated with vigorous exercise, they are common in every type of exercise because you may be twisting your body or otherwise overexerting yourself. I recently learned that the hard way, after spending a lot more time than I should have in Child's Pose during yoga class when my toes wouldn't stop cramping! Whether they happen in your feet or on your side, here are some tips on how to prevent and deal with those annoying cramps.

Side stitch
Cause: Many experts believe that side cramps are caused by the pulling of the ligament that attaches your liver to your diaphragm. This can happen when you breath too vigorously while you run. Runners who exhale when their right foot hits the ground, for example, are more likely to experience muscle cramps than those who don't. Experts also believe that shallow breathing can lead to a higher frequency of side cramps.
Prevention: Warming up is key to preventing these painful cramps, so start with walking or slow jogging before you start any intensive cardio. Also, try not to run while full since that may also pull the ligament that is attached to your diaphragm. If you get a stitch on your side, a side stretch using an exercise ball may give you enough support and stretch to the area to make you feel better.

Toe or foot cramps
Cause: Foot cramps may be caused from too-constricting shoes, depletion of nutrients like electrolytes or water in your body, or just the position that you're putting your toes into while you exercise.
Prevention. Massaging the bottoms of your feet every few days by rolling them on top of a tennis ball will help keep your muscles and ligaments stretched. Also, remember to drink plenty of fluids regularly. If you get a cramp while exercising, stopping and massaging your feet or moving into a position that stretches them (like Downward Dog) can help alleviate pain.

Common Running Injuries and How to Avoid Them

Even with the longer days of the Summer months, I sometimes feel like there is so much training to do and so little time to pack it in. Upping your mileage certainly brings increased stamina, so you can "bring it" at your races, but it can also mean increased injury risk. Overuse injuries are the bane of any runner's well-laid training plans. And that is where some prehab comes into play. You can strengthen areas prone to injury, hopefully bypassing nasty and nagging injuries that can often follow you as you log mile after mile. Here are four common running issues and how you can hopefully prevent them.

Shin Splints

Symptoms: Pain in the lower leg starting below the knee. It can be either on the outside of the shin (called anterior shin splint) or the inside of the bone (referred to as medial shin splint).
Causes: Shin splints are small tears in the area where the lower leg muscle attaches to the tibia, aka the shin bone. The tears are caused from overuse, especially after periods of inactivity. In runners, shin splints often occur because the calf muscle becomes stronger than the tibialis anterior, the muscle on the outside of the shin.
Prevention: Stretch your calves regularly, even on days you don't run. And when running, think about lifting your heels toward your pelvis to activate the hamstring rather than propelling yourself forward by pushing off with your feet, which activates the calves. As for strength training, a series of toe and heel walks help to balance the muscles of the lower leg.

Unfortunately there are more injuries, so keep on reading.

And she's answering your health-related questions.

Dear DrSugar,
What’s the deal with foot cramps? I never got them when I was younger, but lately, I’ve been getting them frequently - especially when I’m lying in bed or trying to point my toes in Pilates class. My foot will sort of seize up and cramp into a weird position, and no massaging seems to make it go away. It seems to happen more on days when I wear heels, but not always. Do you have any idea what causes foot cramps and how I can prevent them?
- Cramped Style
