Have You Ever Hung Up a Photo as Motivation?
Nov 12 2009 - 9:00am I haven't yet cracked a copy of Andre Agassi's new tell-all, Open, but I have been reading reviews and can't help but be fascinated by the revelations about the tennis star, his equally talented wife, and his ex, Brooke Shields. I especially love this tidbit: In preparation for her wedding to Agassi, Shields embarks on an exercise regimen and hangs an inspiration photo on the refrigerator door. The photo is of the woman who Shields thinks has perfect legs.

There's an ad running in a lot of fitness magazines that I tore out and stuck on my wall. It shows the enviable abs of Sarah Burke, a pro skier.

This is embarassing. But for my wedding, I got a copy of Self and Shape magazines and cut out pictures of all the fit-looking women. Then I put one up on my dresser mirror, one on the inside of the medicine cabinet, one on the inside of the kitchen pantry door, one on the refrigerator, and one on the inside of the cabinet door where we store our dishes. Smiling Most of the pics showed the fitness models being active. I swear it helped--I was never big to begin with but I lost more weight than I had even planned on. Very motivating.

There is a picture of Michael Phelps winning one of his gold medals taped to my treadmill... he's celebrating, and all his muscles are rippled (yowza!). It's a reminder that he didn't get to that goal by sitting on his bum doing nothing, and a great motivator to push myself further.

Jayde30--don't be embarrassed! My friend got married a few years ago. She was between two sizes for the dress she wanted, and for whatever reason the bigger size wouldn't look right if she got it taken in, so she needed to lose a few pounds to fit into the smaller size. She looked to her friends for support, so we started "the visual diet" where every day we would take turns emailing the group a picture of a woman who we thought was fit. It did help motivate her, and her dress ended up fitting perfectly!

I don't put it up on display, but I have a pic of me when I was at my heaviest. I'm at a potluck dinner, stuffing my face in the pic. When I first saw that pic (a friend had taken it and gave it to me when she developed the roll), I didn't recognize myself...I had two chins! I keep the pic to remind myself how far I've come and how I never want to get back to that again.

I posted pics of the Sports Illustrated Girls up by my bedroom door as a reminder for what I want to achieve, but then guests (with a healthy dose of side eye) kept asking me why my room looked like it belonged to a 15 yr old boy.

I still have pics of the Olympia's fitness-champions Adela Garcia and Jen Hendershott hanging on my refrigerator - this motivated me to fullfill my first fitness-contest and to stay away from all the "fridge-temptations" when I was dieting Smiling

No, absolutely not, and I can't understand why anyone would. Why would I want to surround myself with images of what the media and fashion industry think I should look like when it's much more important to feel strong and healthy in my own body?

Anon, for me it was fit people rather than stick thin models. I loved the pics of healthy, happy looking women exercising. The pics on my fridge and pantry really worked on my diet. Love the idea of a fit athlete pic taped to my treadmill. Gotta try that one!

I once hung a picture of Adrina Lima on my fridge when I was doing a lot of midnight snacking to remind me of my fitness goal, but then I just got more depressed seeing her perfect body and ended up eating more. LoL.

I don't think I could use a picture of myself at a younger age. I was really, really underweight and had an unhealthy obsession with working out. If I used that for motivation, I'd probably get depressed because a) I don't have hours of free time to devote to working out like I did in college, and b) I'll never look like I did in my early 20's. I'd rather embrace being fit and healthy as a 30 year old than try to be my former 20 year old self. I'm way healthier now, even if I am 15 pounds heavier.

I cut out pages from fitness magazines of women doing different exercizes/workouts and have them hanging in my basement where I work out. It reminds me to throw in strength training or a run on the elliptical.

I taped a picture of Jessica Biel in a bikini to the inside of my bathroom cabinet, with "130 pounds" written on it (my goal weight) before my wedding. I'd leave the cabinet door open so I could see it as I got ready every day. I made it to 132 pounds and looked hot!

I am a writer so I made a collage with words like "Confidence., "Nature," "Vacation" etc. It helps me keep a healthy perspective about how fitness affects my whole life, rather than just a simple "Must..be...size...zero" attitude, because that's just not my body type so it's not particularly inspiring.

I actually have a motivation wall at home in my room! I painted the word on there, and I hung up this gorgeous dress that I don't quite fit into yet. Then around it I have pictures of me (before I lost 50lbs), and the pictures of athletes and healthy women. Its great to see it every day!
