Living La Vida Low Sugar: Cereal

Sugar, in some form or another, seems to be added to so many foods these days, from tomato sauce to canned veggies, with breakfast cereals being some of the worst offenders. Here are my top three faves that contain hardly any of the sweet stuff per serving.

Uncle Sam: A blend of toasted whole grain wheat flakes and flaxseed, this hearty breakfast cereal is filling and high in fiber - 10 grams per 3/4 cup serving. It does contain a bit of barley malt, but one serving of Uncle Sam contains less than one gram of sugar. I have come to love the taste of this cereal and appreciate the dose of omega-3s the flax seeds offer.

Ezekiel 4:9 Flax Cereal: Made of a blend of grains and sprouted legumes, this cereal is filling and flavorful. Best heated up with warm milk, soy milk, or juice, a half-cup serving of the Ezekiel cereal contains zero grams of sugar. This breakfast cereal does contain a bit of malted barley.

Crispy Brown Rice: Erewhorn makes this brown rice version of the ever-popular Rice Krispies that has less than one gram of sugar per sugar even though organic brown rice syrup makes the ingredient list. This gluten-free cereal is also free of fiber, but my kids love it. I appreciate the 110 calories per one cup serving.

What is breakfast cereal, really? Some sugary corn by-product with a snazzy box and perhaps a prize for the kiddies. Easy peasy. Our friends at Cracked had a little too much fun coming up with their own breakfast cereal ideas. They might go over well at Spencer's gifts, but I doubt these would fly at your local supermarket. Let's check out some of the best ideas . . .

This is the nutritional info for one cup of cereal. The ** before the name indicates that the cereal contains high fructose corn syrup or regular corn syrup.

I included the nutritional info for cereals you'd find at mainstream grocery stores and health food stores. The ones that sound healthy often contain high amounts of sugar because of the corn syrup, so be sure to read through the list of ingredients to make sure the cereal you choose is made with mostly whole grains. I always shoot for the ones that have the least amount of ingredients, the ones made with whole grains, and the ones with high amounts of fiber.

Fit's Tips: When comparing cereals on your own, check the serving sizes. Although the info above is based on one cup servings, cereal serving sizes tend to range from 1/2 a cup to 1 1/4 cup. So you may think a cereal is low in calories, but the serving size may be small.

Long Commutes Are Detrimental to Your Health, Study Says

Working a nine-to-fiver is mandatory for most people, and unfortunately, a long commute often comes with the territory. According to a study published today in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, those who travel 16 or more miles each way weigh more and have higher blood pressures than those with less than 10-mile commutes.

Of the almost 4,300 residents from Dallas and Austin involved in the study, researchers discovered that for every 10-mile increase in driving distance, the commuter's BMI (body mass index) rose .17 units. People with lengthy commutes are nine percent more likely to be obese, either because they didn't exercise as much, are eating fast food while driving, or they're not getting enough sleep because their long commute forces them to wake up early.

Weight isn't the only thing affected by a long drive to work. Spending that much time in the car, especially stuck in traffic, also makes a person tired, moody, and stressed out, which is one reason 52 percent of those in the study with a longer commute suffered from high blood pressure.

So what's a commuter to do? Quitting your job is obviously not an option, and if working at home part-time isn't feasible and neither is finding a job closer to where you live, keep reading to learn what commuters can do to avoid weight gain and other health issues.

Warm Up Breakfast With These Whole-Grain Hot Cereal Recipes

Sometimes a bowl of cereal from the box just doesn't do it - you need something warm to jump-start your day. If you're over eggs, and don't have time in the morning for an elaborately cooked breakfast, reach for a bowl of whole-grain hot cereal. Most recipes are easy to prep ahead of time, while others cook up in less than 10 minutes. By morning's end, you will have enjoyed a breakfast filled with fiber, iron, manganese, and zinc. (And, depending on the grain or mix-in, you may have gotten yourself a big protein boost, too!)

Yummy Gluten-Free Cereals (That Don't Taste Gluten-Free!)

But for those with a gluten allergy or sensitivity, a basic bowl of cereal can be a huge no-no. You could always go for these gluten-free breakfast options, or toast made with gluten-free bread, but if a good old bowl of cereal is what you crave, reach for one of these boxes.

Not only does fiber keep you regular, but it can also help lower your cholesterol and prevent heart disease and certain cancers. Breakfast is a wonderful time to fill up on fiber-rich foods, so check out which cereals contain eight or more grams of fiber per serving.
