Class Act: BodyPump

If working out with a barbell has always intrigued you, but you feel a little intimidated wielding a big stick with weights attached all by yourself, then you should definitely check out BodyPump. These hour long classes are structured entirely around working all your major muscles, and then some, with a barbell and some hand weights thrown in for good measure.

Using differing weight amounts (the weights can be easily changed and lock onto the bar bell), you alternate between working the lower body, upper body and abs. Your entire body will get worked as you practice different lift techniques like dead lift, clean lift, and overhead press. All this can make you feel very tough, in a good way. Generally, one body part is worked for a full pop song and this can mean working your triceps for three and a half minutes. For me that was a seriously increased load on my triceps, since I generally do two sets of 12 a couple times a week. In light of the that please take heed of this suggestion:The first couple times you take the class, I highly suggest you go easy on the amounts of weight you choose. You should feel no need to keep up with the instructor, especially if you want to move your arms the next day (or two, or three).

If you want to see if there is a class near you check out this class locator. Hopefully you're pumped up about pumping!

Class Act: Bodypump

Some people like to go about strength training on their own, but others won't touch a barbell unless they have someone telling them how and why and when...

BODYPUMP is a barbell group class that strengthens your entire body. This 60-minute workout challenges all your major muscle groups by using weight-room exercises like squats, presses, lifts and curls (my favorites), all coordinated to music in a group setting. BODYPUMP is a great way to tone and build your muscles with instruction, but without having to hire a personal trainer. You’ll use a step platform, a bar and a set of weights. If you’re new to weight-resistance exercise or you’re out of shape, you should start with light weights and gradually build your resistance. This class is great for anyone who is intimidated (or just has no idea what they're doing) in the weight room or who wants to add a little variation to their boring routine.

BODYPUMP is offered at many gyms nationwide and you can find a class location near you by checking out LesMills.com.
