Which Body Part Do You Have the Hardest Time Toning?

I work really hard doing lunges and squats but no matter what, they never seem to get as toned as I would like. I have since accepted them for what they are and appreciate that they help me walk, but man, why won't they tone-up? We all have that one part of our body that, no matter how much cardio and resistance training we do, just does not want to tone up. So what is your problem area?

A Little Sanskrit Lesson: Body Parts

When you take a yoga class (especially Ashtanga, Vinyasa, and Jivamukti classes), sometimes the instructor will call out the names of the poses in their original language, Sanskrit. Here's a list of some body parts in Sanskrit, so you can get familiar with them. Knowing these Sanskrit words really helped me to remember the names of certain yoga poses.

Pada - foot or leg, as in Utthita Hasta Padangusthasana A (Extended Hand to Big Toe pose or Standing Hand to Big Toe A)
Angustha - big toe, as in Supta Padangustasana (Sleeping Big Toe pose)
Hasta - hand, as in Padahasthasana (Foot to Hand pose)
Sirsa - head, as in Sirsasana (Headstand)
Janu - knee, as in Janu Sirsasana (Head to Knee pose)
Karna - ear, as in Karnapidasana (Ear Pressure Pose)
Anga - limb, as in Trianga Mukha Eka Pada Paschimottanasana (3 Limbs Facing 1 Foot Western Intense Stretch Posture or Half Hero Forward Bend)
Pincha - chin, as in Pincha Mayurasana (Forearm Stand)
Sava - a corpse, dead body, as in Savasana (Corpse pose)

If you're lucky, your instructor will only use the Sanskrit names of poses, so after hearing them over and over again, they'll become ingrained in your brain. It's still okay to call poses by their English name too - it doesn't matter what you call them, just as long as you're doing them, right?

Which Body Part Would You Insure?

Celebrities will do anything to keep their bodies in tip top shape, even if it means taking out a hefty insurance policy on it. <strike> It's absolutely absurd</strike> Makes sense, especially with all the hard work a celeb can put into their bod.

All this comes to light with the announcement that America Ferrera's teeth are being insured by Aquafresh for a cool $10 million with Lloyds of London. So, if you had the means, which part of your own body would you have insured?

BUSTED: Stealing Body Parts From Corpses

In Rochester, NY, 3 funeral home directors and 4 former employees of a biomedical supply company secretly removed skin, bone, and other body parts from dozens of deceased people before their planned cremation (without the family's consent). The 7 are being charged with <a href=http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18724972/">body stealing, unlawful dissection, and other counts. The most serious charges could earn them 20 years in prison.

In some instances, if the person who passed away wasn't being cremated, their bones were stolen, replaced with PVC piping, and then sewn back up before their burial (see the x-ray to the right).

Why did they do this? For the money, of course. They made millions of dollars selling body parts such as knees, heads, and elbows to biomedical companies that supply material for common procedures, including dental implants and hip replacements.

Think of those poor families who already went through the trauma of losing a loved one, and then later had to be told this horrendous news. It's just mortifying and unacceptable.

Trafficking of body parts is a huge, underground business, driven by the growing demand for human bones and tissue. Not only is it illegal, but it threatens the health of unknowing people who are accepting these "donated" body parts. Who knows what kinds of infections could be passed on?

While it's true that patients can definitely benefit from donated bones and skin, and medical students and researchers can learn a ton from using actual body parts, stricter regulations need to come into play here. Families need to know that they can trust funeral homes, and know that their wishes will be respected. What do you think about this?
Source

You Asked: Burning Lungs From Running in the Cold

I recently started running outdoors and am really enjoying it. It's started to cool off, and breathing in the cold air really burns my throat and lungs when I jog. Is there anything that can be done to prevent this?
- Winter Runner

Ahhh, the cold weather is moving in, and I give you credit for continuing your outdoor runs even though the temps have dropped. Running in the crisp air can be so exhilarating to your body and your mind, but your lungs are another story. I have some ideas about how to make your respiratory system happier, though, so continue reading

What Size Dumbbells to Use When

Dumbbells are an active girl's best friend because they're fairly inexpensive, compact, easy to use, and allow you to tone every part of your body. Using them can be a little confusing since they come in so many sizes, and many people may not realize that one size doesn't fit all exercises. For example, since biceps tend to be stronger than their neighbor muscles, the triceps, you'd want to use a heavier weight when doing bicep curls.

If strength training with dumbbells leaves you in the dark about what size weights to use for which exercise, here's a little cheat sheet. Since lifting too much can lead to a pulled muscle, here are the dumbbell weights you should start off with. Once your body becomes stronger, you can choose to gradually increase the amount.

When Did You First Start Working Out?

A little workout nostalgia - I was just thinking back to when I first started exercising, thanks in large part to my dad. Outside of required gym class or a sports team, I was trying to remember when fitness became important to me, and landed right at about eighth grade.

Around the end of middle school, beginning of high school, I started to pay attention to other girls and the way my own body was shaping up. At the same time, I was being exposed to new ways to work out. During high school, I was offered the choice of a regular P.E. class, or a semester of yoga and Pilates. I chose the latter and have been hooked ever since. Additionally, my dad used to ask me along to his training sessions at the gym, where working with his trainer helped to give me a better understanding of fitness and what I could do on my own to stay healthy.

Since then, I've made a conscious decision to keep myself fit - a lifestyle choice that I attribute to such a great introduction to working out during my early high school years. Obviously fitness is important at any age, but I'm curious, when did you first get into a fitness routine?

Tips For Cleaning the Yard Without Breaking Your Back

The cool temps of Fall mean yard work for me. How about you? There are piles of fallen leaves to rake, and I also like to plant colorful flowers to brighten up the upcoming rainy Winter.

I'm sure many of you are knee-deep in yard work as well, and while it's a great way to burn some calories, you want to do it safely so you don't end up injuring your bod. Here are some tips.

Purchase a lightweight rake made out of plastic instead of metal. The plastic glides more easily on the grass compared to the metal, making less effort needed on your part.

When raking, keep your core stable and upright, and use your arms to pull the leaves toward you instead of hunching over. It'll tone your upper body and prevent pain in your back and neck.

If you have woods on your property, rake leaves into small piles that you carry away on a tarp. Don't try to pull too much at once, as that's a good way to strain a muscle. If you have to bag your leaves, bend your knees out to the sides and squat down to pick up piles instead of bending at your waist. This will work your booty and also prevent lower back pain.

If you have heavy things like tree stumps and rocks to clear off your lawn, use a wheelbarrow instead of carrying them yourself.

Bring a bottle of water outside and drink often. Even though you may not be at your gym, it's still a good workout.

Take breaks often. No need to do all three hours of lawn work at once. Do 20 minutes and then stretch for five. Also know when to call it a day. You can always do more yard work tomorrow.

Stretch It: Shin and Ankle Stretch

After long bike rides, my shins and the tops of my feet are often tight. All that flexing of my ankle and pulling up on the pedals to maximize my stroke takes its toll on this part of my body. Once I slip off my stiff cycling shoes, this is the first stretch I do.

Here's how:

Cross your left ankle over your right with your toes pointed to the right.

Bend your right knee to increase the stretch for the top of the left foot.

Hold for 15 to 30 seconds then straighten the right knee; repeat before switching sides.

This is a great stretch post-run as well. Try it. You'll like it.
