Fit Tip: Stay Cool With an Icy Bandana

After reading my post about soaking your hair before a workout, a friend of mine shared a similar stay-cool tip that I just have to pass along.

When hiking, playing tennis, or participating in other warm-weather activities, try soaking a bandana in ice water and wearing it as a headband. That way you can stay cool and show off some hippie-chic style. Or, if it's really hot, try rolling up a few ice cubes in your bandana and tying it around your neck, situating the ice at your back so the cool water trickles down. If you're near a cooler, you can even keep rewetting and reicing the bandana throughout the day.

One caveat: Although wetting your hair or tying on an ice-cold bandana can help you stay cool, it's no substitute for actually drinking water, so don't forget to hydrate!

Kena Kai Bandanas

Hair (especially when it's drenched with sweat) can really get in the way of a good workout. Cotton bandanas just don't cut it for me and while I love wearing hats, I am not always in the mood.

Seeing a need for a bandana that is functional and cute, Kena Kai created Microfiber Bandanas ($17.99, for one 24"x 24" bandana) that are at least 5X more absorbent than cotton bandanas, are naturally more anti-bacterial than cotton and they're actually cute!

The Ultra Absorbent version is a slightly thicker bandana that will absorb up to a cup of water. The Ultra Fine bandana has a look and feel closer to a silk scarf, but a bit stiffer. The Ultra Fine is a perfect bandana for use under a helmet when biking or snowboarding. I think it would also be a great accessory to bring along for a long hike on a warm, sunny day. As an added bonus, those of you with newly dyed hair will agree, lots of outdoor activities can really fade the color so protecting those lovely locks of yours is a good idea. Buy them online directly from KenaKai.com.

Buggin' Bandana

If you are hitting the trails right now and taking advantage of the cool weather, it is nice to have something around your head to catch the sweat, hold your hair and keep bugs out of your face.

Yup, bugs. I am a total bug freak, and by freak I mean I am totally freaked out by them. Bugs could be one of the only things that keep me from entirely enjoying my hikes. Luckily for me, Ex Officio has created Buzz Off clothing, which has insect repellent integrated into the fabric. My favorite is the Buzz Off Lite Bandana ($12) because I always need to get my hair back and I hate pesty bugs buzzing around my face. Talk about killing two birds (or should I say bugs) with one stone. Now if only if they could come up with built in bear repellent. Buy it here.
