&lt;p&gt;If you are training hard, for a race or bikini season, you need to take rest days – at least one and up to three a week. Adequate rest can help prevent repetitive stress injuries, a common side effect of over training. But a day off shouldn&#039;t necessarily be about strengthening your relationship with your couch. Being moderately active can actually help your body recover, hence the term &quot;active rest.&quot; Getting your heart rate up helps to get your blood flowing, bringing oxygen and nutrients to muscles damaged by working out. Getting your blood pumping will also help flush away waste products like lactic acid that can build up in muscles post exercise.&lt;/p&gt;

Here are the guidelines to follow when adding active rest to your workout schedule:
&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Work out at a moderate rate – you should be able to carry on a conversation easily. If you have no one to talk to, you should be able to recite the &quot;Pledge of Allegiance&quot; without pausing to catch your breath. You might have trouble remembering the words. Here&#039;s a &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.usconstitution.net/pledge.html&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot;&gt;refresher course&lt;/a&gt; on the pledge if you haven&#039;t recited it in years.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;You should not work above 65 percent of your maximum heart rate. To do so can bring on the production of lactic acid and that is a substance you are trying to flush from your muscles. &lt;li&gt;Actively roll both thighs inward, creating a more grounded base for your hips to hinge from. This action in the thighs also help keep the feet flat, as the pinky toe side of the foot has a tendency to curl away from you. &lt;/li&gt;

&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Shorten your stride.&lt;/b&gt; It&#039;s nicer for your knees. Really, it is.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Lean slightly forward&lt;/b&gt;. The lean should start at your ankles, not your waist, since bending in the middle can hurt your back and it&#039;s also inefficient.&lt;/li&gt;

Resistance training often hogs the metab-boosting spotlight. It&#039;s no wonder, since a pound of muscle at rest fries three times as many calories as a pound of fat. However, cardio is every bit as crucial for keeping your metabolism humming.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;New research explains why: In a study published in &lt;b&gt;Medicine &amp;amp; Science in Sports &amp;amp;  Exercise&lt;/b&gt;, people pedaled a stationary bike as hard as they could for 47 minutes.&lt;br /&gt;
The finding: They slashed 190 calories above their resting metabolic rate for 14 hours after their workout. Add that to the 519 calories, on average, the cyclists scorched from the workout itself, and that&#039;s one heck of a sweat session.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&quot;If you do just two to three vigorous bouts of exercise per week for 45 minutes, you could lose a pound of fat every two weeks from the combination of calories expended during exercise plus what you burn afterward,&quot; says study author David Nieman, PhD, a professor of exercise science at Appalachian State University.&lt;/p&gt;
