How You Can Avoid Tom Brady's ACL Injury
Sep 8 2008 - 1:00pm You may or may not be a football fan, but chances are high you've heard of Tom Brady, the boyfriend of supermodel Gisele Bundchen. In his first game of the season, Brady, the quarterback for the New England Patriots, limped off the field, and folks are speculating that he's torn his ACL. An MRI will help determine the diagnosis and extent of his injury.

I tore my ACL playing football, too! Just partially though, not all the way.

And men are such babies. I wasn't rolling around like Tom Brady was - I just hopped off the field (one stupid coach even said it was probably just my pads popping, and I was really injured). But I guess it REALLY hurts when you tear it all the way (But boy, mine did hurt like a b*tch the day after, and would really bother me for the following year). My mom tore her ACL all of the way when she was jumping on our trampoline, and that's one of the only times I've seen her cry.

I didn't even know I was seriously injured 'til I got an MRI a month later...the first doctor I went to told me I strained my knee. Thank God I trusted my better judgment and chose not keep on playing for my team, before I knew how serious my injury was.
I'm really lucky though - I never got surgery on my ACL tear and eventually it healed all of the way on it's own!

Anyway, ACL tears are way more common in women than men. It's because our menstrual cycles make us more subseptable at different times of the month to knee injuries.
BUT, I've read that taking birth control pills can really help you regulate those hormones, helping prevent tears.

As much as I don't really enjoy Tom Brady, I do feel for him. I've torn both my ACLs (gymnastics) and would not wish that on anyone. The recovery is dreadful.

Tom Brady is such a cheeseball.

But this post is a great reminder for everyone to warm up properly and to stretch. It's easy to skimp on this part of the workout, yet so vital to your wellness! DO IT!

It seems that football players have some of the toughest injuries. When you see some of them after they have left the sport, they are barely moving.

i tore my ACL during a cheerleading competition and it's NOT fun. honestly - if you're not accustomed that THAT kind of pain - well - it's expected that you're going to be somewhat 'baby-ish' about it. i think that he was also really surprsied since he usually has other players protecting him from getting sacked - that's their job right?

it really sucks that he got injured during the first game of the season - but assuming that he has surgery and goes to rehab for a while on it - then he'll be back and hopefully better than ever - they are able to really do amazing things for knees these days - and well..i'm sure he's got the best working on him since he WAS the MVP

i tore mine skiing, and it hurts like nothing before

it's been almost 12 years and i haven't gotten it fixed yet. i ski with a knee brace and wear a brace when i do other stuff that involves lateral movement like wakeboarding...and i only jump on a trampoline alone, never with others, because if i get double bounced it will pop out.

talk to me about the recovery of surgery cuz i think i'm going in february! how much time do i have to take off work?!?!

I tore mine while playing soccer. I shifted my weight and that was that. I heard the loud pop and the intense pain followed for about 2 min. I completely tore mine and had surgery in Nov. 07. I was off of work for about 6-8 weeks. I was on crutches for almost 3 months. It's almost been a year and my recovery has been tough, i push myself and do all the exercises I was given by the PT and from reading articles. So far so good, I wakeboarded for the first time last month and it felt great. Played some soccer and no problem, just need to snowboard.

I tore my ACL completely about a month ago wakeboarding. Didn't cry or moan at all. In my opinion he overreacted a little bit. When i mentioned this on a youtube video some stupid person replied with vulgar language saying I probably only sprained it and if I had torn it I would have bee crying my eyes out, on crutches for 3 monthes or confined to a wheelchair. In my opinion, Brady's overreaction has caused people to think tearing of the acl may be paralyzing or even life threatening! I don't hate the patriots or Brady or anything but I agree it is an overreaction. Stop the madness.

wow...I don't think you guys are cutting Mr. Brady any slack...there is a partial tear of the ACL, then there's a complete tear, which is what he has...not only that, but he also tore his MCL...so maybe you oughta tear those 2 before commenting on how "men are such babies"

I tore my ACL almost a month ago. When it happened I have to say I was confused because although I was initially unable to stand after my fall, I felt really all that much pain. I had an MRI confirming the injury and still honestly do not feel any pain. Instability in my knee, a little discomfort and stiffness but no pain. I hear that the reconstructive surgery is extremely painful.

For those that think Tom was being a baby, remember he tore more than his ACL.
