Coca-Cola Sweetening Its Lineup With Stevia

Apparently, FDA approval can wait. This week, the Coca-Cola company will begin selling a diet drink sweetened with the somewhat controversial herbal supplement stevia. For three diet flavors of its Odwalla juices, Coke will use the Truvia brand of sweetener, which it developed in partnership with Cargill earlier this year.

Unlike most of the products derived from the stevia herb, Truvia isn't labeled as a "dietary supplement," but it has yet to be approved by the FDA. Coke is moving forward with Truvia-sweetened products anyway, though PepsiCo is still holding off. For the details, read more.

Both Coke and Pepsi expect the FDA to rule that stevia is "generally regarded as safe," but Pepsi plans to wait for official approval. Each beverage giant has its own brand of stevia: Coke's Truvia will face off against Pepsi's PureVia brand, which it plans to use in SoBe Life Water and a new juice called Trop 50. You can already buy one brand of soda made with stevia, called Zevia. But safety concerns persist:

As recently as August 2007, the FDA has questioned the safety of stevia.

"In fact, literature reports have raised safety concerns about the use of stevia, including concerns about control of blood sugar, and effects on the reproductive, cardiovascular and renal systems," the FDA wrote in a letter to Hain Celestial about its Zingers To Go Tangerine Orange Wave Herb Tea. The tea's ingredients included stevia.

But manufacturers have become more confident that the FDA won't oppose their use of stevia sweeteners, with trade publication Beverage Digest having even predicted that the sweetener would be approved last month.

Will you try the new Odwalla drinks before - or even after - the FDA's approval comes through?

Odwalla Nourishing Food Bar: Peanut Crunch

It can be pretty overwhelming when you see the rows of energy bars at the grocery store, but I just found an awesome one made by Odwalla that I think you'd like too. I bought a box of the Peanut Crunch flavor, which are the same as the single bars you can buy, but they're half the size. That means they're only 120 calories instead of 240, so they're perfect for a light snack before or after a workout. I love how these are called "nourishing food bars" instead of "energy bars." That's because they're made with actual food like rolled oats, peanut butter, date and plum puree, and organic soy nuts.

OK, so they're made with healthy and whole ingredients, but do they taste good? Yes! So good! I love "nourishing food bars" that are chewy and these Odwalla Bars fit the bill. The oats, peanut butter and date and plum puree give these bars a wonderful consistency, like a homemade cookie. You can actually see the whole oats too, which is always a plus. They have a very strong "peanutty" flavor and I felt satisfied after eating one bar.

Have any of you tried any of the other Odwalla bar flavors? I'd be curious to know what you thought, so tell me below.

I'm especially a fan of their Nourishing Food Bars. You can buy them at health food stores individually or by the box. I've already raved about their Peanut Crunch bars and thought you'd want to hear about the Cranberry C Monster bars.

The taste and texture totally reminded me of fig newtons - very sweet and chewy. I thought the sweetness came from the dried cranberries, but when I looked at the list of ingredients, I saw "fig puree." These bars are also made with date puree, plum puree, dried pears, oats, and crispy rice. I seriously felt like I was eating a soft cookie, not a "healthy" bar. Want to see what they really look like? Then read more

It's important to note that the bars that are sold individually are slightly bigger than the ones you buy in the box. So this Cranberry C Monster bar is almost twice as big as the Peanut Crunch bars I told you about a while ago.

These Odwalla Nourishing Bars make a quick, easy and filling snack to have anytime. I keep some in my car and desk just in case, and they're also great to have an hour or so before working out. I can't wait to try some of the other flavors.

5 "Healthy" Foods That Cause Weight Gain

You're a smart cookie. You know that oatmeal is healthier than a bowl of Frosted Mini Wheats, and veggie pizza is better for you than a slice of pepperoni. Some foods that we consider to be healthy, though, are still full of calories. You may not realize that these supposedly good-for-you foods are packed with hundreds of calories, so day after day, you may be eating more than you thought, which could cause gradual weight gain. Here are some foods to watch out for:

Veggie lo mein: Veggies are healthy on their own, but if you order veggie lo mein from a classic Chinese restaurant, you're looking at veggies and noodles that are fried in oil. One dinner from P.F. Chang's contains 1,340 calories. It is healthier than the chicken lo mein, which contains 1,610 calories, but not much. Go for steamed veggies and rice instead.

Banana Bran Muffin: Bananas are full of potassium and have a fair amount of fiber, and bran is a healthy carb that keeps you regular. Two great things, right? Well, when you bake them with eggs and sugar, the outcome is not so nutritious. A Starbucks Banana Bran Muffin will run you 410 calories. You're better off eating a bowl of bran cereal with sliced banana.

To see the other three "healthy" foods, read more.

Odwalla Super Protein Vanilla Al'Mondo shake: I'm a huge fan of Odwalla juices because they're fresh and made with a short list of ingredients you can pronounce. A bottle contains more than a single serving though, and if you end up drinking the entire bottle of the Super Protein (which is totally normal, by the way), you'll have consumed 356 calories. Plain milk or soy milk is a better option if you're looking to drink a beverage that's high in protein, yet low in calories.

Chicken and broccoli quiche: Quiche can be a healthy meal since it's made with eggs, but even if you add healthy ingredients to it such as chicken and broccoli, it doesn't take away from the fact that quiche is also made with cheese, cream, and butter. Aside from being high in fat (67 grams a serving), one slice from Ruby Tuesday is super high in calories - 872. Go for grilled chicken with a side of steamed broccoli instead of the quiche.

Whole wheat bagel with lowfat veggie cream cheese: Sounds like a healthy breakfast, but one whole wheat bagel from Bruegger's contains 390 calories. Add a scoop of Garden Veggie Light cream cheese, and that tacks on 90 calories, making the grand total 480 calories. I'm not saying you should give up on bagels altogether, but I wouldn't have a bagel for breakfast every day. Two scrambled eggs and one slice of whole wheat toast add up to 266 calories, and one cup of Kashi Go Lean and 1 cup of skim milk contain 230 calories, so opt for these lower calorie options in the morning.

Learn to Love: Carrot Juice

We often think of juices as being healthy, but in reality, a big cup of juice can also be a big cup of calories. Because juices are super-concentrated and often have added sugar, they can be much higher in calories than their fruit counterparts. For instance, one large orange contains 86 calories, while an eight-ounce glass of OJ has 110 calories.

But I admit I love juice, and sometimes it just really hits the spot. So I've recently made the switch to carrot juice, initially because I noticed it was much lower in calories: Eight ounces of Odwalla carrot juice has just 70 calories. I've since grown to love the sweet but not too sweet flavor - now Odwalla's Carrot Orange Apple Juice blend tastes too sweet! And the nutritional benefits are hard to beat, so read more.

Not surprisingly, carrot juice can easily provide your RDI of vitamin A, which helps with vision and bone growth, fosters cell growth, and enhances the immune system to ward off infection. The tasty beverage is also rich in B vitamins, calcium, and potassium. Because of its low calorie content, it makes a great base for smoothies.

Do you love carrot juice too? Tell me how you use it below.

Coca-Cola's Truvia Wins FDA Approval

Earlier this week, the Coca-Cola company announced it would begin selling three flavors of diet Odwalla juices sweetened with Truvia. Derived from the somewhat controversial herb stevia, Truvia had yet to be approved by the FDA when the Coca-Cola company made its announcement. On Wednesday, Dec. 17, the soft drink giant received word from the FDA that Truvia is now "generally recognized as safe" by the agency. Pepsi-Co also received word that its stevia-based sweetener, PureVia, won the agency's approval as well. SoBe Life Water, made by Pepsi-Co, will soon be releasing three zero-calorie flavors sweetened with their stevia-derived sweetener, and Coke will begin using Truvia in Sprite. Look for the "generally recognized as safe" drinks in supermarkets near you.
Holiday Survival: 10 Healthy Snacks For Road Tripping

"Over the river and through the wood, to grandmother's house we go." I love a Thanksgiving road trip, but I don't love the unhealthy food options on the road. I could splurge a little and order a Whopper, but truthfully, I know if I eat it, I'll feel like crap. With a little planning, you can avoid the dieting pitfalls associated with road tripping. The trick is to have a travel-size cooler with you since healthy foods often need refrigeration. Here are some of my faves.

Edamame: Take the bag out of the freezer the night before and put it on the fridge. It'll be defrosted but not soggy and ready to pack in the morning.

Veggie sticks: Chop your own the night before and place in ziploc baggies, or buy precut carrots, celery, and broccoli florets at the store. Pack a container of hummus in the cooler for dipping.

Apples and cheese: A simple snack packed with protein and fiber. You can preslice them or bring a knife with you. If you're not into apples, pack some whole grain crackers like Kashi TLC party crackers or Doctor Kracker flatbreads instead.

Fruit slices and yogurt: Cut up apples, pears, pineapple, and nectarines and place them in a container. Pack them in the cooler with vanilla yogurt for dunking.

Banana and peanuts: This is always a satisfying combination and very convenient since you don't need utensils. Just stick the peanuts in the banana before you take a bite.

To see more healthy snack ideas read more.

Trail mix: Make a big bowl of your favorite nuts, dried fruits, dark chocolate chips, and granola. Then place half cup servings in individuals baggies.

Cereal mix: Choose whole grain cereals that have at least three grams of fiber per serving. Some of my favorites are Kashi Go Lean Crunch, Barbara's Shredded Oats, Kashi Honey Sunshine, and Barbara's Puffins. Mix them up, measure out serving sizes, and bag them.

Rice cakes with almond butter and cinnamon: These can be premade right before you leave. Place them in a plastic container so they stay fresh and mess-free.

Air-popped popcorn: It'll satisfy your crunchy, salty cravings. Pack a bag; it's easy to munch on whether you're the passenger or driver.

Energy bars: These are so convenient and satisfying, but be sure to choose ones that contain nuts, fruit, and whole grains. Some great choices are Larabars, Luna Sunrise Bars, Bora Bora bars, or Odwalla Bars.
