The NYT Thinks Hollywood Is Looking a Little Marilyn

I think FabSugar will totally agree with me when I say: the ladies of the Golden Globes were looking fierce this year! Everyone looked stunning in their dresses and was glowing with fit, healthy smiles. That's why I am questioning two pieces in the New York Times mentioning the weight of the actresses in attendance.

In the piece, A Rounder Golden Globes, writer Andy Port asks, "What do Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson and Courteney Cox have in common." I'm thinking it's their fabulous smiles, upper body strength, and legs for days. Nope. It seems that they're rounding out: "Instead of a Barbie-doll circumference, there was suddenly, amazingly, a womanly roundness to their frames. More Marilyn than Twiggy, that’s for sure."

In the piece, Port writes that if you focus on the upper body of the actresses, you'll better notice their fuller bodies. And while I think Port is celebrating their "new bodies" by pointing out their "sexier curves," I don't see the same thing he does. When I think of Jen, Courteney, or Kate, curvy doesn't really come to mind, nor does a "Barbie-doll circumference." In my mind, these ladies have always been extremely fit and svelte, not like Twiggy or Marilyn for that matter. And certainly in the last few years they've all maintained healthy weights. Port's observations just seem to be a bit of a stretch.

Further proof that the NYT has gone a little off-center in its Golden Globe coverage is Cathryn Horn's comments towards Mad Men's Christina Hendricks - an actress known and praised for her voluptuous curves: "Not pretty Christina Hendricks in Christian Siriano’s exploding ruffle dress." (As one stylist said, "You don’t put a big girl in a big dress. That’s rule number one.")"

I understand that part of the job of a fashion writer is to make critical judgments about style, but to me this quote is a sugarcoated way of saying, "Fat girls don't belong in high fashion." And in my opinion, Christina isn't even "big." Buxom for sure, but not big.

Perhaps why I'm most confused by the pieces is that they single out women known for having active lifestyles and healthy weights. I'm most worried at the message these articles send to the public - if healthy, uber-fit celebs fall into the same category as Marilyn Monroe, what does that say to the rest of us?

Kate Hudson Slims Down For New Role

Kate Hudson dishes the skinny on weight loss, Botox, and A-rod in the December issue of Elle UK, which hits newsstands this week. The already slim star has to lose 20 lbs. for her upcoming role as a terminally ill patient in the new film, Earthbound. Though she's not exactly sure of her exact weight, the mother of one thinks she's heading towards 110 pounds - pretty tiny given she's 5 ft. 6 in. tall.

How does an already slim and healthy girl like Kate get that tiny? Give up alcohol, apparently. It seems that Ms. Hudson is a fan of knocking a few back. "I love my glass of wine. I love tequila," says the star. "To be in New York for two weeks and not have one beverage! I'm not sure I've ever done that."

Given how many calories and sugar alcohol contains it makes sense that the sacrifice worked for her.

I think Kate looks great au naturel, but when the time is right she might get a little help to keep her youthful glow. "Everyone’s so obsessed with who gets Botox, but it’s great! Are you kidding? The fact that women can avoid going under the knife and get a little Botox treat and not have to worry about it? I’m glad it’s there for when it’s time."

For now, Kate is crossing her fingers that her Yankee man will find victory at this year's World Series.

Kate Hudson: At Peace in a Two Piece

Kate Hudson, who's been under pregnancy watch for some time now, has no problem strutting around in a bikini. Perhaps she signed the Body Peace Project, but Kate seems to be totally at peace with her own body image. Or at least that is what she recently told Total Film magazine about her role in Fool's Gold. Here's more:

"I've danced my whole life, I work out all the time and I'm not worried about being totally perfect.

[My character is] a diver, so I'm not wearing this tiny string bikini; they're more the Speedo-type bikini – you know, the ones that cover pretty much everything."

What about you guys? Bathing suit season is just around the corner, so are you too worried about being perfect to wear a bathing suit or will you rock your suit no matter what?

Fit Tip: Wear a Helmet

Now I love Kate Hudson as much as the next fan, she happens to be one of my favorite celebs. I love that she's tooling around town on a bike instead of driving in some over priced SUV. Not only is it good for the environment, but also it is good for your health. But there is one thing I don't love . . .

She's not wearing a helmet! I know helmets are not the coolest looking piece of gear while biking, but they are the most important - even I have to force myself to put on a helmet when I am cruising around town. For those of you who think you don't need a helmet when biking, I leave you with this adage that my parents always told me: There are three types of bikers: those who are going to have a crash, those who have just had a crash, and those who are going to crash again.

So wear a helmet, pretty please, even if you're just biking around town.

Will the Ab Machine Get You Abs Like Kate Hudson?

Kate Hudson's abs are looking fab these days, but can you get abs like that by using the ab machine at the gym?

Ab machines will definitely give your abs (and back) a decent workout, but I wouldn't rely on this machine for head turning abs. The problem with the machine is that it only allows you one position and if your goal is abs like Kate, a good idea would be to work your belly from all angles.

Right now I am loving the full body crunch because not only does it add variety to a boring ol' crunch and it works your abs from several angles, you can also do it anywhere. Here's how: Lie supine (on your back) with knees bent, feet touching floor and hands behind your head. Curl your abs up (make sure to pull your belly button towards your spine and flatten your lower back against the floor), while bringing your shoulders and feet off the floor. Hold for 3 seconds and lower slowly back to starting point to complete one -- Do 3 sets of 15 to start, but work your way up to doing 3 sets of 25.

Fit's Tip: Make sure to breathe on the curling action of the exercise and don't use your hands to push your head up, your abs should be doing all the work.

Diet: "She eats smart, small portions," says a source close to the star. "She loves sushi, and eats very organic if she can, shopping at local farmers' markets."

Workout: Hudson regularly logs 45-minute runs and takes strip aerobics classes at Sheila Kelley's S-Factor in L.A. Her son, Ryder, 3, also keeps her on the go. Says the pal, "Just being a mom, she stays active."

I've always been a Kate fan and I am loving that she does not seem to be doing anything extreme post divorce and I'm even more pleased that she takes her role as a mom seriously. Go Kate!
