Speak Up: Are Celebs Fit to Sell Clothes?
May 10 2007 - 12:30pm Kate Moss has been causing quite the stir at Topshop recently with the launch of her new clothing line. While Kate might have a flair for fashion, how are her clothes going to look on non-model, "normal" sized women? Kate is pretty darn thin and most women just aren't that thin, and even at their healthiest and fittest, will never be.

Although I think that celebs sometimes only make clothes that look great on people who are shaped like them, other famous designers are guilty of maing clothing for super skinny people too. It's not like this is something that is uncommon so, no I wouldn't not say that celebs are unfit to sell clothing.

thank you for clearing up the uk vs. us size differences b/c i was about to say the size 8 girl definetly looks smaller then that b/c she doesn't have much hip to make her need a large size.

i personally think there should be advertisements like this where the do show what it looks like on a "any clothes looks good on me" body versus a few sizes larger... b/c then you can get an idea of how it will look on someone with bigger boobs/butt/hips/etc especially if you plan to order online.

I think it wouldn't be a problem if these size 00 celebrities designed clothes that were cut for all body types. It wouldn't be an issue if they made items other then slinky dresses or skinny jeans. And even in the real world thin people still have curves and those styles still might look a bit wonky. I think they should just design them for everyone, the mass public.

I am so happy you posted this, I think all celebrities should think about the audience in which they are selling their clothing, they should think about modern day women, that don't have time or funds to have a personal trainer and private chef.

I think the size 10 looks the best in the Kate Moss outfit, and NOBODY looks good in Madonna's outfit.

I also believe that if they designed clothes meant for "regular" people, no one would be interested in them, no matter what they say.

The UK size 6 girl (US size 2) is the only person who can wear the outfits well, in my opinion. The UK size 8 girl might look cute in it, but the vest is stretched way too tight across her stomach.

I liked the comparison a lot. And I agree designers should design more fashionable and wearable clothing for women who aren't a size 0-2.

I just had to correct what clutch26 said - UK size 6, as a few others pointed out, is a size 2. The largest of the women pictured, the UK size 14, is an American size 10. I'm kind of annoyed at the paper - I'm a UK size 14, and that's not really what my body looks like at all. For a tall girl with big boobs and hips a size 14 doesn't really look like that woman does - she's likely a lot shorter than I am. I bought those shorts online, and absolutely love them - they're supercomfy and they may be supershort but they're also cut really well.

Confidence and a knowledge of the type of body you have is what allows you to wear this kind of thing, not the body of a supermodel. There's a big difference between a size 14 who's 5'9" and a size fourteen who's five inches shorter. You can be a size 14/US size 10 and be healthy and fit and look great in short shorts.

On the other hand, that kimono dress is kind of hideous. Y'all are right - nobody really looks good in it. The dress's fault, then.

Very interesting post Fit! I personally am on the fence with this one... I do think that their clothes should be fashioned and sized towards the mass public however we all know that doesn't happen. So I really think it's best that you just shop where you know the clothes will fit you well and are most comfortable in. I also think that fitting into a dress you really like is motivational with *any* clothing line or designer.

    HANG ON A SECOND:
If this is from a UK magazine, we need to bear in mind that the girls in the pictures are NOT what those of us in North America would consider a size 6 or 8 - euro sizes run much bigger. This means that the girls in the pictures are actually a UK 2 and 4. Something to consider, if that's what we're judging what average people look like in the clothing, man, I'm hopeless. I'll never even be as lithe as the comparisons!

I think I would like it if someone more my shape/curves (read "not a size 0) would make clothes. Maybe Scarlett Johanson or Jessica Simpson. I like Daisy Fuentes jeans because I have a bigger butt and smaller waist and her jeans fit me well.

Obviously that dress of Madonna's looks awful on the size 14 girl. It looks 2 sizes too small. And the I think Kate Moss' waistcoat wouldn't look good on anyone any bigger (the size 8 looks a little chunky in the tummy in it).

I'm a US 0/2 but I have a DD chest (genetics, not surgery) - so no celebrity-styled anything works for me without having the possibiliity of looking VERY trashy - most of the celebs who design these things are much more proportionately built. However, right now I'm wearing one of the Madonna H&M shirtdresses and I've gotten nothing but compliments today. Like so many of the other women have noted, it's all about knowing what works for you.

hey GeikoSera-this is my opinion of course, but-most lines WILL NOT make clothes that look good on bigger people, as they don't want to have big people wearing their clothes. For example, I could not go out an buy anything designer because for the most part, these clothing lines do not make plus size clothing...plus size women are not allowed to dress in 'cute' stuf like that so no one in the high end market makes it.

I'll take Madonna ANY DAY over the usual crop of Vogue models. Madonna is only 5'4". She might wear a US size 2 but at that height, she doesn't need to be extremely underweight to achieve it. It's not like the 5'11" size 0 models we've been seeing on the runways. Madonna may be thin, but it's a healthy kind of thinness that's a lot more achievable than what we often see in fashion ads.

As for the poor fit of the clothes on other women... well, I've never been to Topshop, but this just seems like typical H&M to me. I never saw anything at H&M that looked good. They use cheap fabrics that don't drape well, they take shortcuts in the construction that cause an awkward fit, and nobody really looks good in the clothes unless the garment has been pinned in back and carefully arranged for a photo shoot.

I'm so glad to see this! Even the UK and US size difference, needed to show that all the woman look just as good in all the outfits. If you pick something that's flattering for your body, you're going to look good. These are pretty common outfits- shorts and a dress. Which all woman wear. Very good comparison. Wish more designers would look at this and the replies. So what now they might have to be a certain weight at certain agencies, but not all, not a "mandatory" thing. So what 2 models died. They just want that money no matter what. When it's woman like us that buy the clothing in the stores. I think it will be a long time if ever, that the size 4 model will change.

Usually in photos they pin the clothes in the back to make them fit differently and more sexy/flattering than they actually do. Kate clearly has on a large size vest (so it cuts lower) a few of the buttons are undone, and it's most likely pinned in the back to show off her waist.
