Yoga Pose of the Week: Frog

The yoga pose known as Half Frog allows you to stretch your quads individually, and since I'm a runner and biker, it's one of my favorite stretches. If you like that pose, you should try the more challenging Frog pose that stretches both quads simultaneously. Not only will this pose stretch out the front of your thighs, but it will also give you a nice stretch in your chest and shoulders. Read more

Muppet Band-Aid App For Kids

Like most tots, my lil ones have a bit of an obsession with bandages — one slight scrape and they're begging me to fix it up. Some of that is probably the fun characters they get to place on the boo-boo, but I have a feeling more of it has to do with the attention they receive. Imagine how they would react if it was none other than Kermit the Frog, Gonzo, or Miss Piggy calming them down? Read more

How to Stretch the Quads

After a series of outdoor runs this week, I wasn't prepared for how on fire my quads would feel during today's yoga class. Going through the Warrior poses proved difficult, and by the time we moved into a variation of pigeon pose, I was breathing deeper than ever before. It was a good reminder that even though I always stretch after working out, I don't give enough attention to my quads — a Read more

Inner Thigh Stretches

After a weekend spent doing Pilates and ballet-inspired workouts, I experienced a type of muscle soreness that was entirely new to me — my inner thighs (aka adductors) were on fire. While I have a series of stretches that I do after every workout, I now realize that none of them really target this often overlooked area. Here's a group of yoga poses your kids will love to try. Yoga and kids make such a great fit because children naturally love to move their bodies and use their imagination to act like animals and other things in their world. Just keep in mind that younger tots will prefer hopping and ribbiting in Frog pose rather than holding still, so encourage them to move around and make noise. Use these Read more

Exercises to Relieve Back Pain

We are pumped to share one of our fave stories from Self here on FitSugar! We know planks and dead-lifts are great, but the real question is, how can they help relieve your aching back? Back pain affects about 8 out of 10 people, according to the National Institutes of Health, and is one of the most common medical problems. It's costly too — in 2004, a team from Duke University found that Read more

Animals Did Yoga First

Yoga is over 5,000 years old, it's one of the oldest forms of healing therapy. Humans were not the first to do yoga. Are you surprised? Way back in India, animals were observed in nature, and noted for their particular abilities and accomplishments. To imitate these qualities was considered a high sign of spiritual enlightenment. Many postures require you to "be" an animal, such as in Frog Read more

Wide Squat Yoga Pose

'Tis the season for tight hips. If it's snowy where you live, and you're doing all kinds of Winter sports like skiing and snowboarding, I'm sure your whole lower body is feeling tight. The onset of Winter often causes people to exercise less, and not moving around can cause tight muscles, too. If you sit all day at a desk, that's not helping your hips either. I bet your body is just craving to do Read more
