Did You Get a Fitness Gift During the Holidays?

I love getting fitness gifts! New gear motivates me to exercise, especially when it's stylish workout clothing that speaks to my inner fitness fashionista. And while some people are sensitive about receiving fitness-themed gifts, most of you welcome them. While I didn't get any fitness gifts this holiday, I did spread the love to others; I gifted my Bikram-loving friend with a Manduka Black Mat, grabbed a cute workout tank from Zobha for my roommate, and spoiled the mister with rock climbing gear, wool wicking socks, and a Patagonia jacket. I'm happy to report that they were all stoked on the bounty they received!

Motivate a Friend With a Fitness Gift

After saying that I hated the look of my all-white gym shoes, I was gifted with a new pair of colorful Nike sneaks this week. And because cute gym clothes motivate me to work out, I immediately started plotting a trip to the gym that night just so I could wear them. The whole episode reminded me of the time that I gave a running tank top to an old roommate. She was so excited and touched by the gift that she was out the door in under an hour to go for a run.

While receiving a fitness gift can be a touchy subject for some, I think for the right person it's perfect motivation. If there is someone in your life who is a fitness fanatic, enjoys getting a little extra push, or is trying out a new sport, consider getting him or her something fitness-y as inspiration. Since I received those Nikes, I have seriously been at the gym every night this week. I guess there is something about having new fitness gear coupled with the thoughtfulness of another person that doubles my motivation. How about you?

Retails sales are down this holiday season, so the headlines keep telling us tell us. Shoppers have been working with tight gift budgets this year. This spending decrease means that expensive gadgets, even health-promoting fitness ones, were less likely to appear under the tree. There are a lot of fitness junkies on my gift list, so while I gave no heart rate monitors or bike computers this year, I want to know if you received a groovy fitness gadget or any fitness gift for that matter. One Woman's Quest for the Best: The Fastest, Farthest Female Inline Skate

We are pumped to share one of our fave stories from Fitness Magazine here on FitSugar!

Over the next few months, families will travel across the U.S. via plane, train or car during summer road trips. Kacie Fischer will be covering the same distance (nearly 4,000 miles, on her route), but on inline skates. . . and in just 74 days. If she reaches her goal, Fischer will also be breaking five Guinness World Records in the process.

We caught up with Fischer, a Promax DOer, after a long day of skating to get the backstory about her fit trip which has been two years in the making.

How did you get started with inline skating?

I started skating when I was 7, but didn’t start skating longer distances until I was cross training as a college runner. I found that I could travel a lot farther and see a lot more, plus it was a lot more exhilarating-try flying down a hill at 40+ miles per hour! Inline skating is like running on steroids.

The Next Addition to The Shops at Target Revealed

San Francisco dwellers might already be familiar with the Curiosity Shoppe, but come Sept. 9, Target will be adding the San Francisco-based store as its second flight of The Shops at Target. Curiosity Shoppe founders, Lauren Smith and Derek Fagerstrom, will curate the 60-plus-piece collection, including entertaining accessories, stationery, kitchenware, games, crafts, and curiosities, ranging from $3 to $25.

Before opening the Curiosity Shoppe in 2007, Lauren worked in Todd Oldham's design studio and Derek was a magazine editor at publications like Esquire and Interview. The couple ditched their East Coast gigs to try their hand at the retail business and landed in San Francisco's Mission District. Known for its eclectic mix of crafts, kits, books, unusual gift ideas, home decor, and quirky art, we're anxious to see how San Francisco's Curiosity Shoppe will fit into Target's innovative shops series.
