Indoor Cycling Just Got Better: Schwinn Training Bike

Winter rain and snow means it is indoor cycling season: I'm talking about spinning. Equinox has filled its Cycling Studio with new spin bikes by Schwinn. The bikes are pretty dang sweet.

I rode one during 45 minutes of Sports Cycling, and the ride was smooth and comfy with so many different hand grips available - the handlebars are tilted for ergonomic placement. The tension on the fly wheel is created by magnets too, ensuring that all the bikes in the room create the same tension across the board. Best of all the bikes have console computers, which not only work with most heart rate monitors, but also measure miles per hour, cadence, distance, and watts. The pedals have cages, if you don't have cycling shoes, and the pedals are compatible with road bike cleats as well as mountain bike cleats - very versatile.

These indoor cycling bikes will arrive at Equinox gyms starting now throughout early Winter. They are exclusively at Equinox for the time being, but these bikes can only spell upgrades for most gyms. Tell me, do you spin?

Class Act: Skinny Jeans Fitness Workout

I won't lie, the name caught my attention: Skinny Jeans Workout, a place where denim and my hamstrings collide. I find the fashion / fitness connection slightly amusing, but the 45 minute class left me more than slightly sweaty. It truly is a sculpting workout that borrows from a diverse array of fitness methods. We did lunges of all sorts, from the basic forward variety to the criss-crossing curtsy lunge. We did squat variations. We even did multiple Warrior 3s. My legs and glutes were worked from all angles ensuring that every fiber was taxed. There were sections of the workout that felt rather balletic too; these moves really worked the deep glute muscles that help lift the seat. The class kept moving, and my heart rate stayed pumping for most of the class. The first 35 minutes of the class are standing and there is an emphasis on standing tall and keeping your chest open, since part of looking good in your skinny jeans is postural. I have heard that slouching can make a person look 10 pounds heavier. The ab work is very Pilates based, with cuing to keep the abs pulled to the spine - a phrase you can't make it through a Pilates session without hearing repeatedly.

I will definitely take this class again and recommend it. This class is currently offered at many Equinox locations, but look for a version at a gym near you.

Fit Tip: Break It Down

On my third round of 20 push-ups, I was hesitant to put my hands down on the floor at Equinox. It had nothing to do with the state of the gym floor; I was suffering. This is when Hannah gave me a great simple tip that I am going to pass onto you. When faced with a daunting set, break it down. For instance, if those last 20 push-ups seem impossible, count them out in four sets of five. The smaller sets seem easier to conquer both mentally and physically. You can convince your mind and your muscles to hammer out five push-ups, and then another, and so on. It works when counting laps in the pool and minutes of a run. Test out this trick: drop and give me 20 push-ups.

Lunge Combo: Side Lunge to Curtsy

When I write that Hannah, my trainer at Equinox, is kicking my behind, I mean that she's really working my glutes. No joke. Here is a move she taught me recently; it's highly effective for toning the backside. The side lunge works the muscle on the side of the pelvis, that I affectionately call the glute med, as well as the inner thighs. The curtsy move really works your glute max and the smaller booty muscles that help lift the seat.

For instructions on this lunging combination, read more.

Holding a five- to 10-pound weight in your left hand, side lunge to the right bringing your left hand to your right foot. Lower your booty as much as possible. Keep your toes pointed forward and your right knee bent to no more than 90 degrees.

Push off gently with your right foot and come into a curtsy position with your right leg crossing behind your left as you press your weight overhead. Keep your hips square and your curtsy tight. Both feet should be pointed forward. This completes one rep.

Repeat by stepping immediately into a side lunge from the curtsy.

Once you have completed 15 reps, switch sides. Do three sets total.

If lunges are new to you, don't add dumbbells to this exercise until you are comfortable with the leg positions. Remember to keep your abs engaged to stabilize your torso throughout this exercise.

Today, my Equinox trainer Hannah busted me saying the exact same thing.

Hannah told me to jump up and catch a high bar on the cable pulley machine for hanging knee lifts. I said, "I can't do that." She shook her head; she wasn't buying my negative attitude and had me try until I caught the bar. When I jumped and finally grabbed the bar I felt like the strongest woman in the world.

Dealing With DOMS

Let me begin with a confession. While training for my recent triathlon, I skimped on my strength training, and that's an understatement. To jump back in the thick of it, I started working with my trainer Hannah at the Equinox Fitness around the corner from my office. Proximity and weekly appointments have made my efforts excuse-proof. The problem is, I am sore. Very, very sore. While I appreciate a little post-workout pain, I am dealing with serious delayed onset muscle soreness, aka DOMS.

I thought I would take this painful lesson as a chance to review the best strategies for dealing with DOMS. For a refresher course on the subject, read more.

DOMS is defined as pain usually felt 12 to 48 hours after exercising, but can last as long as a week. It is a commonly held theory that the pain comes from microscopic tears in the muscles and the swelling associated with those tears. Sometimes you can actually see or feel the swelling.

In 2007, an Australian study found that stretching did not relieve the pain associated with DOMS. I feel, though, that stretching the muscles when sore helps to build more elasticity in the new muscle fibers.

The soreness should go away by itself, but do avoid any vigorous activity that makes the pain worse. Light aerobic exercise can help the healing process by bringing fresh blood to the sore muscles.

Some people find pain relief in massage, although this doesn't necessarily improve muscular function.Taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication (NSAID) like ibuprofen can help relieve the pain, but like massage, this will not speed your recovery time.

A proper warmup can help reduce the symptoms associated with DOMS. Increasing blood flow to muscles with light cardio makes them more elastic, so they are more resistant to micro-tearing.

When you're experiencing DOMS, your muscles are actually weaker. Keep this in mind and avoid strenuous activities until the pain has subsided, because you are more likely to injure yourself.

Drinking tart cherry juice after a workout might help reduce the pain, but the jury is still out on this one.

Check Your Breath

Breathing is fundamental to every form of exercise I can think of; the first concept I teach new Pilates clients is how to breathe. I might know this intellectually, but Hannah my swim coach at Equinox decided my freestyle breathing needed an overhaul.

To prove her point, she even took a video of my form. Since my swim lesson last week, I have been paying extra attention to my breathing in all forms of exercise, from yoga to running, as well as when I am in the pool and I urge you to check your own breath. Are you unconsciously holding it at any point when you're working out? Are you raising your shoulders to inhale? When you inhale are you only filling the top portion of your lungs? This is a great little tool and if you're feeling bored with your workout, it gives you something productive to work with rather than watching the clock.

On the Move: Commuter Workout

Do you feel like your commute is interfering with your gym time? Add some simple strength-training moves to your bus or train time. Michael Martin, a personal trainer at Equinox, developed a simple routine for you to take advantage of your commute. Check out the moves.

Strap-Hanger Pull-Ups: Didn’t get a seat? No problem. Work your biceps while you wait by holding onto the strap to engage your bicep. Keep your neck and shoulders relaxed while holding the bicep contraction for eight to 10 seconds and release. Repeat the move eight to 12 times or until muscle fatigue. Casually change arms and repeat on the other side. Another option: Try briefcase curls while waiting on the platform or stuck in line waiting for a train ticket.

Commuter Seated Calve Raises: Start with your feet hip-width apart and flat on the floor. Come up onto the balls of your feet and contract your calf muscles. Since you’re working without weights, squeeze the contraction tightly and hold it for eight to 10 seconds breathing normally, then slowly lower the feet to the floor using your own resistance. Lay your briefcase or backpack across your lap for added challenge and weight.

There are plenty more moves, so keep on reading.

Class Alert: Skinny Jeans Fitness Workout

The fashion trend of skinny jeans is sticking around, and the fitness industry has decided to help women feel more comfortable wearing curve-hugging denim. Fitness-forward Equinox Gym is now offering the Skinny Jeans Workout. They describe the class as:

A Whole Body Workout designed to focus on your abs, buns and thighs and get you into those skinny jeans. Molly Fox creator, Skinny Jeans Advocate and Change your Body Agent, fused tried and true '80s exercises with new 2008 moves. A fitness experience for all ages, get into a pair today . . .

The class mixes Pilates concepts with down and dirty strength training. Surprisingly, there is also an emphasis on posture. Standing up straight makes everyone look better. The class focuses on core muscles (abs, back, and glutes), the inner and outer thigh, and the shoulder girdle to help ladies stand tall.

The classes are offered at many Equinox locations and I am sure many gyms will start offering similar conditioning classes to help us all slide into skinny jeans with ease. Although this workout sounds a little silly, I totally want to check it out since I am always looking for ways to tone my backside. What about you? Would you be interested in taking this class?

However, if these fantasies entertain you, you should consider auditioning for The Amazing Race. I spoke with half the winning team from this season, Tammy Jih. She's a corporate lawyer in San Francisco and totally charming to boot. Not only do we live in the same town, but we both work out with the same trainer, Hannah, at Equinox - it's a small world. The Amazing Race is an intensely physical competition. Having never been athletic, Tammy started training in the pool once she knew she would be on the show. She didn't know really know how to swim and was certain there would be a water challenge. What she didn't know was that she would be swimming in Beijing, in the warm-up pool used by the Olympians, wearing a LZR suit. Learn what Tammy found to be the hardest challenge when you read more.

Aside from wearing a state-of-the-art swimsuit, the other fitness clothing Tammy swears by is lululemon. She told me

"I brought one pair of pants and one pair of capris that were both lululemon, but that material just works so well in the warm and the hot that I wore the capris under the long pants when I needed like a double layer . . . oh, it was cold! We went to Siberia . . . so it was cold!"

Unfortunately the challenge in Siberia involved running in underwear, and of course the challenge was filmed from behind. After going through so many challenges that pushed her emotionally as well as physically, this challenge was the hardest for her. She explains:

"I kept saying 'stop filming me from behind!' and I kept getting yelled at by the producers saying 'stop talking to the camera!' and I said, 'I don’t think you understand. No woman wants to see what they look like from behind in movement and in underwear!'"

In retrospect Tammy says she wished she had done more strength training before the show, but she still works out twice a week with Hannah and now she strength trains. She said, "Sometimes I imagine that we're still racing! When I'm running outside sometimes I'm imagining 'Oh! [Host of the show] Phil's going to be waiting for me, I better hurry up!'" The Amazing Race continues to inspire Tammy, even after she she won. Pretty cool, no? I probably won't be auditioning for the show anytime soon, but I am definitely going to watch next season. How about you?
