Eye on IRON

Spinach went from being one of ‘the healthiest foods you could eat’ to ‘the throw it all out as fast as you can’ foods. In case another media crazed E-Coli outbreak surfaces, we're going to have to find other ways to get that iron, as spinach was (and still is) one of the best plant sources of getting this mineral.

For further ideas on how to get your iron, read more

Eat more foods rich in Iron, such as:

Meat, such as Beef, Pork or Lamb

Liver, if you can stomach it

Cereals, such as Total and Cream of Wheat

Potatos, with the skin still on

Beans, such as Garbanzo Beans

Fit's Tip: To further enhance your absorption of Iron, pair foods high in Iron with foods high in Vitamin C, like bell peppers--the Vitamin C helps absorb more Iron into your body. An easy and yummy way to get your Iron on: Try dipping Vitamin C-rich bell peppers into a garbanzo bean made hummus.

E.Coli Testing Kit: A Germ-A-Phobe's Best Friend

Food recalls seem to be at an all time high this year. From peanut butter to Listerine to pet food, nothing seems to be safe anymore. So while we wait for the FDA to get a handle on the situation, you may want to take matters into your own hands...

The MMS Safe Strips Food Testing Kit ($19.95) contains: Two E.coli test strips, two Salmonella test strips, a bottle of buffer solution and instructions on how to do it. Basically users will be mixing food with distilled water and buffer solution, preferably in a blender. The salmonella test strip produces results in thirty minutes, while the E.coli test takes an hour, so make sure you give it some time before digging in. Buy it from FoodTestingStrips.com.

Fit's Tip: While I think that testing everything you eat may be a bit excessive, even for me, you may want to consider taking a kit along while traveling or think about keeping it around the house in case another spinach recall hits the fan.

BJ's Recalls Mushrooms: More E. Coli?

Massachusetts-based BJ's Wholesale Club is recalling packages of fresh mushrooms after a routine inspection revealed the possible presence of the deadly bacteria E. coli.

Great. First spinach from California, then lettuce used at Taco Hell, and now mushrooms. What's the deal?

The products affected were Wellsley Farms brand fresh mushrooms purchased between February 11 and February 19, 2007. Although BJ's has not received any reports of illness, they are voluntarily recalling the product as a precaution.

If tests by BJ's confirm the presence of E. coli, that will be the third food outbreak of the bacteria in the U.S. over the past 7 months.

Fit's Tips: Customers who bought any of the mushrooms can return them to any BJs for a refund. If you have any questions or concerns contact BJ's toll free Member Care line at 1-800-BJS-CLUB.

How to Use This Medicine

Injectable

Your doctor will prescribe your exact dose and tell you how often it should be given. This medicine is given as a shot under your skin.

A nurse or other trained health professional will give you this medicine.

You may be taught how to give your medicine at home. Make sure you understand all instructions before giving yourself an injection. Do not use more medicine or use it more often than your doctor tells you to.

This medicine comes with patient instructions. Read and follow these instructions carefully. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions. There are many different types of injection devices available for this medicine. Read all instructions carefully to be sure you know how to use your device.

Each time you get your medicine, check to be sure you have received the proper device. Talk to your pharmacist if you have questions about the device that you were given.

You will be shown the body areas where this shot can be given. Use a different body area each time you give yourself a shot. Keep track of where you give each shot to make sure you rotate body areas.

Use a new needle and syringe each time you inject your medicine.

If a dose is missed:

Call your doctor or pharmacist for instructions.

...More Taco Hell

OK so I hate to be a buzz kill, but I think it may be in your best interest to stop eating at fast food taco joints for the time being.

Taco John's, the self proclaimed fresh taste of the west-mex, has a reported "possible" E. coli scare as three dozen people became ill after eating at a Taco John's restaurant in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The symptoms seem to follow suit with those that come from consuming the E.coli bacteria and many people have been hospitalized. While we wait to find out if it was really E. coli that was making everyone sick, all suspected food ingredients have been removed from the menu and the restaurant has been sanitized.

Interestingly enough, Taco John's is not at all affiliated with Taco Bell, who has been battling their own E. coli issues.

Fit's Tip: Seriously gang, if you need a taco fix then try making your own tacos at home right now. They are easy to make, way better for you and a lot less likely to contain E.coli than those you'll get at a fast food joint.

Taco Hell Continued

Just as I thought the Taco Bell Hell was coming to a hault, new reports are claiming that the E. coli contamination was not found in the green onions, as originally suspected, but possibly in the lettuce. While findings are not final, they are also looking at the cheese and ground beef.

While the lettuce is served in approximately 70 percent of all Taco Bell menu items, thought is that they should probably just focus on everything at this point.

White onions were also suspect at one point and health officials found the produce was contaminated with E. coli, but the strain was not the same as the one identified in the wider outbreak. Gross.

Interestingly enough, officials are still saying that the Taco Bell outbreak does not have anything to do with the Taco John E. coli outbreak.

As of Wednesday evening, the Center for Disease Control had reported 71 confirmed cases of E. coli infection in five states. New Jersey had 33 confirmed cases; New York had 22; Pennsylvania had 13, Delaware had two, and South Carolina had one.

Moral of the story? Stay away from taco joints right now.

5 Things: Reasons to Be Thankful For Cranberries

Cranberry sauce might just be a lowly condiment on the Thanksgiving table, but this tart berry is a nutritional super star. Here are five things to chew on about cranberries.

Cranberry juice interferes with the bacteria E. coli that is responsible for the most serious types of UTIs (urinary tract infections). The berry and its juice contain tannins, which fight the infections on the front lines by creating barriers that prevent E. coli from getting close to the urinary-tract lining. If the bacteria cannot implant itself, it cannot cause infection.

Cranberries also contain proanthocyanidine. If you can't tell by its crazy name that it is an antioxidant and it prevents formation of plaque on the teeth.

Cranberry juice, because of its high-acid content, can help break down and prevent the formation of kidney stones.

Studies indicate that only 30 percent of super-tart cranberry juice of a 100 percent juice mixture is necessary to receive the beneficial vitamins and nutrients, as well as other health benefits imparted by cranberry juice.

Captains of early sailing ships provided cranberries to their sailors to combat scurvy since the berries are high in vitamin C. One cup of raw cranberries contains about one fourth of the current RDI (Reference Daily Intake) for an adult. Many processed foods made with cranberries, like juices and drinks, have extra vitamin C added to the product, resulting in the full daily requirement of vitamin C.

So, I want to know if you eat the cranberry sauce or not? Let me know in the comments section below.

BEEF RECALL!!!

More than 100,000 pounds of frozen ground beef patties processed by Merced-based Richwood Meat Co. Inc. from April to May 2006 have been RECALLED after 3 children in Napa, CA were sickened by E. coli. The beef was distributed in California, Arizona, Idaho, Oregon and Washington.

The products being recalled are hamburger patties and ground beef sold under the brands Fireriver, Chef’s Pride, Ritz Food, Blackwood Farms, California Pacific Associates, C&C Distributing, Golbon and Richwood.

So before you invite your neighbors over for a friendly BBQ, check your freezers and destroy these products, or take them back to the place you bought them.

An E. coli infection causes abdominal cramps and diarrhea which is no picnic. It typically goes away after 5-10 days, but there can be complications for kids, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.

I don't know about you, but I can't deal with all these recalls anymore!

Label Able: Treated by Irradiation

When you're buying chicken at the store, and the package says "treated with radiation," those little words may make you think twice. I know it sounds like something really bad for you, to eat meat that's gone through radiation, but it's actually a process approved by the FDA. If foods have been irradiated, the FDA requires that they are labeled with a statement such as "treated with radiation” or “treated by irradiation.” They must also show this international symbol for irradiation called the radura.

Don't worry - eating food that's been treated with radiation won't make your eyes glow, or affect the nutrients in the food. What it will do is decrease your chance of eating food contaminated with E. coli bacteria.

Radiation is basically invisible waves that move through the air. Light, infrared heat, and microwaves are all forms of radiant energy. So are radio and TV waves, and toasting and broiling. Irradiation uses shorter wavelengths than radiation, and they're capable of damaging microorganisms, like the ones that can contaminate your food. It won't get rid of all the heeby jeebies that can make you sick, but it can definitely decrease your chances of food poisoning.

More Beef Recalls!

I'm sorry to have to tell you that another recall on ground beef has been issued, this time by a Wisconsin company called American Foods Group.

Ninety-six thousand pounds of beef were voluntarily recalled after two people became ill, possibly from E.coli. These cases are being investigated by the Illinois Department of Health. The meat was sold in seven states including Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Tennessee, Wisconsin, and Virginia.

The meat was produced on Oct. 10 and labeled with "Est. 18076" inside the USDA mark of inspection. If you have questions about the recall, check out the USDA's Web site or call the toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854).

Is it just me, or are these constant recalls making you scared to eat?
