Calorie Count: Fat-Free Greek Yogurt With Fruit

What's not to love about Greek yogurt? Packed with calcium and protein, the rich snack is as great for breakfast as it is as a healthier stand-in for decadent desserts. While we've long been fans of nonfat flavored Chobani and Oikos yogurts, Greek yogurt specialist Fage also recently released its own line of fruit-filled, fat-free options.

Fage Total 0%, Chobani 0%, and Oikos 0% all contain zero grams of fat and saturated fat as well as real natural ingredients like honey or whole berries. But how does your favorite brand stack up with its similarly flavored competitors? Check out the table after the break!

Good News From Chobani: New Flavors and Free Yogurt!

Greek yogurt has not only become my favorite kind of yogurt, but it's also one of my all-time favorite foods. I love the thick and creamy texture, and the dose of protein. One six-ounce container offers 14 grams of protein or more (depending on the flavor and brand).

Lately, I've been putting Chobani in my grocery cart - it's less expensive than the Fage or Oikios at my local market. But I also love the taste and consistency. When reaching for my usual flavors, plain and blueberry, I did a little dance when I noticed some new flavors. You may have already seen them at your grocery store, but they were new to me - nonfat raspberry and low-fat banana strawberry, which I picked up. To find out what I thought about them,

If you love yogurt with real fruit on the bottom, you're going to love this new flavor. The creamy yogurt is banana flavored, and when you mix in the real strawberries from the bottom, you get the fresh tasting combination of the two fruits together. I'm used to eating nonfat yogurt, so this yogurt was a real treat. It is so creamy and full of sweet, delicious flavor. It honestly tastes as decadent as ice cream, and would make a great healthy alternative.

As you can see from the nutritional information below, it contains slightly more calories, fat, and cholesterol than the nonfat strawberry, but it also contains more fiber and fewer grams of sugar. If you're not worried about eating too much saturated fat and cholesterol, I would highly recommend this low-fat strawberry banana Chobani. I know I'll definitely be buying it again. You can feel good about eating 14 grams of protein, and your taste buds will feel good about the amazingly luscious flavor.

Food Review: Chobani Greek Yogurt

I'm a big fan of yogurt for breakfast or for a pre-workout snack, but I'm an even bigger fan of Greek yogurt. Oikos and Fage are equally delicious, but they're not cheap (about $2 per small container). So when I was food shopping the other day, I was thrilled to see another kind of Greek yogurt called Chobani on sale for $1.29. Wahoo! It doesn't take much to get me excited.

Chobani comes in all sorts of flavors, like strawberry, peach, blueberry, and honey, but I picked up the vanilla. To see what I thought and find out how this yogurt compares to Oikos and Fage

I really loved this Chobani Greek yogurt. It's smooth, thick, creamy, and has a slightly warm vanilla flavor, so you can enjoy it alone or with added fruit and granola. The texture and mild sour flavor reminded me of both Oikos and Fage Greek yogurt, and nutritionally, if you check out the chart below, you'll see all three are pretty similar. Chobani is slightly higher in calories and sugars, but it also contains more protein per container. For me though, I think I'll buy whichever one is the cheapest, being as things are pretty tight these days. If buying organic is important to you though, you may want to spring for Oikos.

Food Fight: Fiber, Iron, and Protein

While shopping for yogurt the other day, I saw a woman stocking up on regular yogurt. I couldn't help but casually ask, "Have you ever tried Greek yogurt?" I know it contains so much more protein than the cups she was choosing, and it got me thinking about other foods that may seem alike, but nutritionally, they can be incredibly different. Here are a few seemingly similar foods that have surprisingly different nutritional values. Hopefully this list will help you make healthier decisions the next time you hit the grocery store.

Fruit with the most fiber: While cruising down the produce aisle, pick up some cherries instead of grapes. Twenty grapes contain about .8 grams of fiber, but the same amount of cherries offers 3.4 grams!

Whole grain with the most protein: Long grain brown rice is known for being healthy. A one-cup serving contains 5 grams of protein. Not bad, but pick up some quinoa instead, since one cup has 8.9 grams. It's a protein superstar.

Fresh greens with the most iron: When choosing greens for your salad, I've always loved red leaf lettuce. One cup contains .3 mg of iron, but if you choose spinach instead, you'll get more iron - .8 mg per cup. Every little bit counts.

What's Going to Be the Next Big Health Food Trend?

First it was hummus, then soy milk, then almond milk. Now it's Greek yogurt that's the hottest health food trend: sales of brands like Fage and Chobani are through the roof. In just five years, sales of this thick, protein-rich yogurt have grown 2500 percent.

Americans can't seem to stop catching waves of the latest whole foods. But now that açai, goji berry, quinoa, and probiotic yogurt have already been discovered en masse, I can't help but wonder what, if anything, will soon jump the shark. Surely you have some thoughts on what wholesome foods are going to be big next. Share them below!

Healthy Lunches: Skip This, Pack This

Heading back to school in a couple weeks means packing lunches for you and your kiddos. Seemingly healthy choices may not be as beneficial as you think, so here are some ways to pack a healthy lunch.

<table border=1">

Skip This

Pack This

Reasons Why

Deli meat

Sliced tofu, roasted meat, or grilled chicken

They'll offer protein without added sodium and fat.

Wheat Thins

Triscuits

Triscuits are made with whole wheat flour instead of enriched flour, so they offer more fiber per serving, plus fewer calories.

Cream cheese on a bagel

Natural peanut butter on a bagel

The nut butter might offer more calories, but it's also higher in fiber, lower in saturated fat, and higher in protein.

Orange juice

Orange

Opt for the actual fruit to increase your lunch's fiber content and save you liquid calories.

Regular pasta

Whole wheat pasta

Whether it's your kid's mac 'n' cheese or lasagna for yourself, always opt for whole wheat pasta for added fiber.

Goldfish

Annie's Whole Wheat Cheddar Bunnies

The Cheddar Bunnies are made with whole wheat flour instead of enriched flour. They're also lower in saturated fat and offer more fiber per serving.

Keep on reading to find out what else you should skip when packing lunch.

I wasn't even eating cholesterol! The thing is, your liver makes cholesterol and it's actually essential for your body to function normally. Cholesterol is also found in food and appropriately called dietary cholesterol. Since your body produces enough, you don't need to worry about getting any from diet. What you do need to worry about is getting too much.

A healthy person with healthy cholesterol levels can safely consume 300 milligrams a day. If your levels are high, aim for less than 200 mg a day. Are you eating too much? Find out how much cholesterol is in your favorite foods when you
