ACTivism: Avon Walk for Breast Cancer

Every three minutes another American is diagnosed with breast cancer. This statistic has inspired millions to participate in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. Perhaps it will inspire you too.

The 2 day, 39 mile walk raises money to allow

"medically under served women and men to be treated giving them access to the care they require. And hard-working research teams will be powered by the funds they need to fuel their quest for the cure."

Participants, walkers and crew members, must each raise $1800, and there is a comprehensive support system to help them reach their fund raising goals. If you are interesting in participating you will want to know that 76.8%, of all funds raised, is directed to mission programs and services, including grants, gifts and awards to beneficiary organizations

If you need motivation to exercise, signing up could be the answer since there are volunteer-led Training Walks in the areas surrounding Avon Walk event cities. I have heard it is a life transforming experience.

To see the list of participating cities, read more

ACTivism: Avon Breast Cancer Walks

It is an unfortunate truth that breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. October might be breast cancer awareness month, but the disease still strikes 365 days a year. That is why Reese Witherspoon is working with the Avon Foundation For Women to fight breast cancer.

Fighting this disease is not just for the Hollywood elite. You can make a difference by participating in one of the Avon Breast Cancer Walks. Even their simple slogan - "For two days, we walk as one" - is pretty inspirational. The funds raised by walk participants help medically underinsured women and men receive the screening, support, and treatment they need. Proceeds from the walk also fund research for a cure for breast cancer.

Inspired to lace up your walking shoes? See if one of the nine walks is happening in your city when you read more.
Boston, MA - May 16-17
Chicago, IL - June 6-7
Rocky Mountains - June 27-28
San Francisco, CA - July 11-12
Los Angeles, CA - Sept. 12-13
New York, NY - Oct. 10-11

Coming up in 2010:
Houston, TX - April 10-11
Washington, DC - May 1-2

Have you taken part in one of these walks? If so, leave some advice for the folks doing them this year in the comments section below.

Source

Cancer More Likely for Minorities?

It's a sad truth that for the most part, minorities tend to lack health insurance and access to good medical care because of poverty and cultural differences. This means that minorities are more likely to develop and die from cancer because they can't afford to get treated.

Now new research is discovering that money isn't the only cause. Genetics may also have something to do with minorities developing and dying from cancer.

Researchers examined healthy breast tissue samples from 26 black women and 22 white women. One gene involved in cell division and growth, and another gene involved in cellular energy production. Both genes were more active in African American women.

These two genes found in normal breast tissue of African American women may predispose them to developing a more aggressive breast cancer than white women. They'll also develop it at a younger age so they have a higher risk of dying from it. This is sad news for women considering that eating red meat can also increase a woman's chance of developing breast cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death among U.S women after lung cancer. About 400,000 women die from it each year.

Fit's Tips: If you want to do something to support breast cancer patients and survivors, check out Avon's Walk for Breast Cancer.
