With 2010 in full swing, many of us have jumped feet first into healthier lifestyles to slim down. Aside from regular exercise, getting portions under control during meal and snack times is a great way to reduce our calorie intake and help the scale budge.
I'm sure many of you have tips tucked away in your healthy tool belt for cutting calories, such as using skim milk in your coffee instead of cream or lemon juice instead of salad dressing.

The month of January is typically like the Superbowl for gyms. New Year's resolutions tend to get more people moving off the couch and lacing up their sneakers — I have heard regular gym goers refer to the new faces in the crowds as resolutionaries. At peak times you might be experiencing a little less elbow room at the gym, and your yoga classes might be a bit more crowded too.

Getting into a consistent fitness schedule is essential if you're on a quest to be fit and healthy, which many of us stated as a get fit goal for 2010. Aside from mapping out your weekly workouts, you'll also reap faster results from mixing up your routine, especially when it comes to strength training.
When you learn a certain group of go-to exercises, it's easy to get in the habit of doing them in the same sequence every time so you don't leave one out.

One of my goals for 2010 is to be able to do 30 push-ups — the difficult kind with your knees off the floor. Push-ups are one of the most effective exercises to strengthen and tone your upper body, and as of now, I can probably do about 12 with good form, but I want to push that number to 30. Are you up for trying out this challenge along with me?

I am a firm believer that Pilates makes for great cross training and that it makes everything better — from running to yoga, from cycling to sex. Nothing like a little lumbar spine mobility coupled with strengthening your pelvic floor to ramp up your sex life (and more than a few of you have resolved to "have more sex" in the new year, so why not make it better too?).
Now that I have captured your attention, let me tell you that a mat class is the simplest and cheapest way to learn Pilates.

It's a new year, and if you're having a hard time making it to the gym, it might be time to dust off your fitness routine. Boredom is a serious motivation killer, which is why I suggest trying something new for your next workout. It is also good to experiment with new forms of exercise to avoid overtraining and injuring yourself.
