Courtside to Poolside: Women in Sports Weekend

Not only did we have a three day weekend, but the world of women's sports was alive with excitement.

Whether you were watching Wimbledon or not, a sister on sister final match must intrigue you. The Williams sisters dueled it out in an exciting final match (7/5, 6/4). In this match up Venus came out on top, continuing the friendly sibling rivalry – the last time Venus beat younger sister Serena was in the US Open in 2001. The sisters also won the women's doubles title. Congrats ladies and thanks for bringing tennis excitement back to the states!

Off the court and into the pool, mommy Olympic swimmer Dara Torres made an amazing comeback indeed! Not only did she win the 100 meter freestyle as well as the 50 meter freestyle events, she broke a US record too. With already nine medals to her name, Torres is still hungry for more and pushed herself to make the US Swim team after taking seven years off from competitive swimming. Now we just have to wait to see how she does in the Olympics.

We will definitely have our eyes on Dara as well as Venus and Serena when the Beijing games begin. Are you getting excited for the Olympics? I certainly am!

The 2008 Wimbledon Championships starts today and I, for one, am very excited. I love the game and I love watching strong men and women duke it out on the grass courts. I know that not everyone is a tennis fan, so will you be watching?

Venus Williams Is in Shape

2008 Wimbledon champ, Venus Williams turned pro at age 14. She won her first grand slam title at 20. Now at 28, she is still winning and she shared some of her secrets of success with Shape and here are some highlights.

On Motivation: As far as motivation goes, Venus tells us who has inspired her the most. It's Serena, no question. "Without her, I couldn't have achieved anything. She's helped me believe in myself." Serena loves to give Venus little sayings to remember, such as, 'If you take your opportunities, more opportunities will come.' "That got me through one final at Wimbledon," recalls Venus. "It was a ridiculously difficult match and I was behind until the last three minutes. I kept saying that line over and over in my head: 'If I take the opportunities on the court, more will come.' I was also thinking, 'I want to be like Serena; I want to win like Serena.' And I did."

On Practice: She recommends you practice and practice more! It’s the key to confidence, says Venus. “You have to practice to develop your talents - and learn to enjoy putting the effort in,” she explains. She doesn’t just practice on the court; her gym routine keeps her in the winner’s circle.
On Her Core: Her success on the court is not just her power serve, but a well conditioned core. "I dedicate one entire workout each week to it, but I also challenge it during other exercises – it's where so much of my power comes from."
