Calorie needs depend on weight, age, gender and activity level, as well as individual metabolic rate. The USDA Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion provide a rough estimate, of which this exam is based. So test your smarts on general calorie needs with this little quiz.

To see how many calories you should be consuming for your height and weight, check out the Fit Calculator.

I agree pinkgirl. For someone my size/height, that would be way too many calories at any of those activity levels.

I don't understand, a woman under 30 can eat the same amount of calories whether they exercise thirty minutes a day or not? That doesn't seem to make sense.

Got them all wrong...all I know is that my doc told me to work out 60-90 minutes 5 times a week and eat no more than 1500 calories.

I guessed too little calories throughout. I recently used the calculator to figure out intake to lose weight so I had that number in mind rather than the number you should eat for maintenance.

These numbers are way off because they generalize too much. I work out about an hour a day and eat 1200 calories just to maintain my weight. Women need to multiply their weight by 11 to figure out how many calories they need to maintain their weight. 150lbs x 11= 1650 calories a day (this is a BMR and does not figure in exercise; add the amount of calories you burn a day during exercise to your BMR)

I got 0 right. Women who are 31-50 need 1800 calories a day?! That seems a bit excessive...

I got 100%, and it sounds right to me. I'm 5'4, 125lbs and eat around 2000 calories or more a day to maintain weight. I get a moderate amount of exercise.

If you can't maintain weight at these levels of calories I think you must have either messed up your metabolism through too much dieting or else not have much muscle mass. PS. the BMR calculation above is waaaaaaay to low to maintain weight.

That's so not true for me. If I ever ate 2000 calories, I gain weight. AND I do exercise... a lot.

I've done a lot of research on this, so it was simple for me. I eat way less than is advised to stay thin. It's not great, but it's easy.

My metabolism isn't screwed up from dieting (I don't "diet")and I certainly am not lacking in muscle mass. I'm actually much heavier than I appear because I have quite a bit of muscle mass. For me, the calorie amounts would be way too much. 2000 is like a major cheat day for me. If I ate that much every day, I'd be huge, and I work out at least one hour 6 days a week.

I don't get how people come up with these figures. I eat nowhere near what these reports and the online calculators say I could eat, and I am never hungry, and certainly not skinny. I aim for 1400 cal, but eat closer to 1500-1600 most days.

This is the formula I've seen for BMR for women:
    Women: BMR = 655 + ( 4.35 x weight in pounds ) + ( 4.7 x height in inches ) - ( 4.7 x age in years )
