Dermatologists found a link between acne and high levels of iodine, which is found in foods such as shellfish. High levels of iodine are also found in dairy products, because the cows are fed iodine-enriched feed to prevent infection.

When iodine enters the body and mixes into your bloodstream, the excess is secreted through the oil glands, irritating your pores. So drinking milk could be aggravating your skin.

But you don't have to give up your love of milk, butter, or cheese. Just switch to an Organic version that contains less iodine.

Fit's Tip: If you love sushi, be aware that the nori wrap contains huge amounts of iodine - 1,020 parts per million as compared to 26 in butter.

Daylight Savings Blues

Losing an hour of evening light in one quick turn of the clock always bums me out.

Losing an hour of evening light in one quick turn of the clock always bums me out. I like to leave work with the sun still shining because life just seems easier with natural light. So this year to stave off the daylight savings blues, I’ve been enjoying a daily cup of St. John’s Wort tea.

The herbalist at my local green pharmacy told me that it has been proven to help short term memory and mild depression. Seems like a perfect aid for my mood as I slowly acclimate to the sudden loss of evening light.

After kissing the little ones good night, I light some candles on the mantle (they remind me of the long departed sun), relax on the couch and slowly sip my tea. Adding a bit of honey always makes tea taste better.

If you are not the herbal tea type, you can always take St. John's Wort in capsule form.
