Plan a Unique Vacation Using These Online Tools

Just cause Fall is quickly approaching doesn't mean your vacation plans have to come to a halt.

Just cause Fall is quickly approaching doesn't mean your vacation plans have to come to a halt. If you've got the travel bug but are sick and tired of staying in cookie-cutter hotels and battling the crowds at the most popular tourist attractions (cause your hotel concierge sent you there), try something new. Check out these five online tools that will help you plan an affordable and unique vacation like you've never had before.

  • Airbnb — This website allows "hosts" to rent out their apartments, bedrooms, living rooms, or entire houses to guests on the cheap. Not just a place to rest your head at night, Airbnb hosts are known for having a knack for hospitality: tea, coffee, muffins, and even sometimes a home-cooked meal await you in the morning, while other hosts act as tour guides for their guests. It's a great way to see a new place from a local's perspective, and save some money on lodging.
  • Glamping Hub — Want to dip your toes in the outdoors but don't want to feel like you're roughing it? Glamping Hub lets you browse through and book some amazing outdoor accommodations so you can still feel in touch with nature, but get high class amenities like an actual bed, 600-thread count sheets, beachfront views, and even shopping and laundry services so you can stay fresh while you relax, all at extremely affordable prices.

Book Flights and Hotels With Kayak's Updated iPhone App

There are days when I'm en route to work and then I remember — you were supposed to check flight prices for your big New Year's trip!

There are days when I'm en route to work and then I remember — you were supposed to check flight prices for your big New Year's trip! Since flight prices are always going up and down, I either set up alerts or I remind myself to keep checking back to discount travel sites.

I already love using Kayak to compare flight prices, and now with its new and improved iPhone app, I can practically do all of the things on Kayak from my iPhone that I do on my computer. The Kayak app will also put all of your flight info, hotel confirmation, car rental bookings, maps, and other travel items into one itinerary — sort of like what TripIt does. I can definitely see this app making it to the top of my 2010 favorite iPhone app list.

Go Kayaking to Strengthen Core and Upper Body

If you're too hot to run, bike, or hike outside, but you still want to enjoy the Summer weather, exercising on water is a great way to beat the heat.

If you're too hot to run, bike, or hike outside, but you still want to enjoy the Summer weather, exercising on water is a great way to beat the heat. Kayaking is one of my favorite water sports because it's safe to do alone, or if you prefer some company, you can kayak with a group of people.

The paddling action will effectively tone your arms, back, and abs. Sitting upright will also increase flexibility in your hamstrings and improve your posture. It's a great complement if you're a runner or biker, since most of the work is done by your upper body and back. You can paddle hard to burn calories and work your muscles, and if you get tired, you can slow down or take a break and just let the current float you along. The best part is that if you get hot, you can jump in the water for instant refreshment.

Seal Goes Kayaking

Our friendly neighborhood seal hopped aboard this kayak for a little company, and what does he endure in return?

Our friendly neighborhood seal hopped aboard this kayak for a little company, and what does he endure in return? Name-calling ("Clifford") and awkward gawking, that's what. So a seal can't hitch a ride around town anymore without causing a fuss? And what happened to the momentum here? No wonder he bailed.

You Asked: My Girlfriend Is Too Extreme

Dear Sugar, The woman I've been dating for the past eight months is great, and I have strong feelings for her, but she says she is frustrated and tired of trying to figure out what we can do together.

Dear Sugar,

The woman I've been dating for the past eight months is great, and I have strong feelings for her, but she says she is frustrated and tired of trying to figure out what we can do together. You see, I was a good athlete when I was younger but I have a bad knee and can only hike for about an hour. I also have a bad back now so can't lift a lot. She loves to mountain bike and hike mountains, kayak and cross country ski and I can do only short durations of those things. She refuses to try less strenuous activities as she says the extreme sports is what "makes" her.

I've told her that I would love to do all those things as I used to, but I just can't anymore. In response, she wants to know why we should stay together, since she figures it just won't work. I care for her deeply and don't want to let her go. Any suggestions as to whether I should give up or is there hope for us?

Beginner's Guide To Canoe & Kayak Paddling

I am going kayaking in a few days and while I used to kayak a good amount a few years ago, I'm thinking it's time to brush up on my skills.

I am going kayaking in a few days and while I used to kayak a good amount a few years ago, I'm thinking it's time to brush up on my skills.

I'm excited for the great upper body workout, but I am nervous that I'm going to forget how to maneuver and paddle. After scouring the net (do people still say "the net"?), I came across The Beginner's Guide to Canoe & Kayak Paddling from AmericanCanoe.org. The guide is a great little resource for anyone looking to learn (or brush up your skills) on paddling. If you're about to embark on a canoe or kayaking trip, you should definitely check it out.

Work Your Upper Body: Kayaking

Looking for a way to beat the summer and workout at the same time?

Looking for a way to beat the summer and workout at the same time? Well have you tried kayaking? I am not talking about white water river kayaking, but getting out on a lake, bay, or inlet for some paddling action.

If you live near water, or are planning to vacation near water, you should have an easy time finding a place that rents kayaks and all the associated gear. Or better yet, you can introduce yourself to kayaking on a guided nature tour. Do consider taking a lesson, to learn how to maneuver the boat as well as the very important skill - how to get in and out of your kayak while you're in the water. They are really easy to tip.

Chances are you will start off with a beginner kayak since they offer greater stability and are more difficult to tip over. If it's your first time, I recommend going out on a day that isn't too windy, so the water is less choppy.
