I have absolutely loved this challenge because I am definitely much fitter than I was 12 weeks ago and feel so much better about myself.  During this challenge I have learned to eat better, by keeping track of my food intake as well as portion control, I exercise more and keep things from getting boring by changing up my exercise routine and experimenting with new healthy recipes.  I have dropped a few pounds, feel stronger and am more confident in the way I look.  I would love to win a prize, but I also think everyone who participated in this challenge wins because you feel so good when you are done!

Get Fit For 2010: Before and After

It is week 12 — the final week — of our Get Fit For 2010 giveaway.

It is week 12 — the final week — of our Get Fit For 2010 giveaway. This week's challenge is to share your results from three months of healthy living. Check out FitSugar reader ooodalishis's before and after photos.

So, since January, I've lost exactly 5 pounds. It's not exactly earth-shattering, especially considering the quantitative fact that I log in 4 to 5 gym sessions weekly. But my fitness goals were not just to lose weight, but to increase strength — and, by the stack of plates on the ends of my barbells, I've been achieving that end at a very happy pace.

Weight aside, something happened this weekend that inspired the topic of this post. I met up with a friend who I hadn't seen for a couple of months, and he made the first aesthetic-related comment that alluded to a my 2010 fitness goals — he told me my posture looked great. Funny, right? Who comments on your posture? Who even pays attention? I absolutely beamed, though, because I am wholly guilty of slouching. It actually takes a little work to straighten up — which is why the celebrazines always tell you that it makes you look slimmer. You're not just sucking your belly in — you're actually utilizing your back, butt and core muscles to maintain poise.

After strength training for two months, I didn't have to consciously "flex" the muscles to stand up straighter — they were already engaged on account of being tighter! That an independent third party had noticed it was really a testament to the efficacy of all my work!

Whoa, looks like the Insert Image function works again. To illustrate both the (slight) aesthetic difference (check out my eroding muffin top and aforementioned posture), these are the photos taken of moi on January 30, 2010 — at 143.5 lbs exactly, and prior to any strength training:

Words That Move You . . .

Here is a motivational quote FitSugar reader ChilePepper shared in the Get Fit For 2010 community group.

"No man is ever whipped, until he quits — in his own mind."
 — Napoleon Hill

When I was training for the marathon, I started reading Runner's World magazine, and one of the articles talked about how the muscles can keep going long after the mind thinks the body is finished — a survival mechanism. So when I was training for long runs, and running the actual marathon (those last five miles, holy moly), I kept reminding myself that my legs were fine, it was my mind that had to keep going. And it worked, even though i really really wanted to stop and walk, I kept running until the end.

This is the last week of our Get Fit For 2010 community contest. The final challenge: share your before and after results to enter to win a $100 Nike gift card and our fabulous grand prize.

Get Fit For 2010: A Reader's Standout Moment

We're up to week 12 of the Get Fit For 2010 giveaway, and last week's challenge is to share a standout moment from the past two months.

We're up to week 12 of the Get Fit For 2010 giveaway, and last week's challenge is to share a standout moment from the past two months. Here's what FitSugar reader ashaw2114 has to say about the standout moments that sneak up on you.

I don't know if any single moment stands out for me. My journey to fitness has been a long one — about two and a half years ago at this point, I really started to make fitness and healthy living a priority in my life. Since then, I have accomplished many things, met goals, and gotten great, incredibly touching support from friends and family. But it's not the numbers on the scale, the sizes on the new clothes, or the personal bests in the gym that really drive home the changes I've made.

The moments I enjoy most, the ones that stand out, are the ones that sneak up on me. I catch my reflection out of the corner of my eye and it takes me a minute to realize it's actually me! Or someone in a class at the gym asks me (me!) for help or encouragement. Moments like that are great, because they just happen, and you can't force them. Crossing the finish line of a 5k is satisfying, yes, but there's something so great about just living your life and having the special moments come, and knowing that all the work you did has made a difference.

The Get Fit For 2010 giveaway is almost over so make sure you catch up on all your challenges! By participating, you'll also be entered into the drawing for our weekly giveaway of a $100 Nike gift card as well as our awesome grand prize.

Get Fit For 2010: Fave Workout, Couch to 5K

Although the Get Fit For 2010 giveaway began in January, it's not too late to join the contest, and it's never too late to make a new fitness goal.

Although the Get Fit For 2010 giveaway began in January, it's not too late to join the contest, and it's never too late to make a new fitness goal. Sometimes all it takes is a good workout plan to get you on track to a healthier you. FitSugar reader corgipants found a love for running using her favorite workout.

A year ago, if you asked me to run to the end of the block I would have said "No way!" And now I can run three or four miles at a stretch! It all started with a vacation to Colorado and an empty hotel fitness room. I thought, what the heck, I'm alone, no one will make fun of me, I might as well try to run on the treadmill. And I did, for a few minutes! After I got home, I researched ways to get started and printed out the Couch to 5K program. In a few months, I ran my first 5K nonstop! Now if you asked me to run to the end of the block, you wouldn't see me for a good 45 minutes!

This week's challenge for the Get Fit For 2010 giveaway is to play catch-up. This means you have the opportunity to do any of the challenges you didn't have a chance to do, such as state your health and fitness goals or share a recipe. Remember, the more entries you've made, the more chances you have to win our weekly prize — a $100 Nike gift card — and our fabulous grand prize.
