Flight

Denzel Washington is up for an Oscar for his performance as Whip, a pilot who miraculously lands his plane during a catastrophe, in Robert Zemeckis's dramatic disaster movie. Though he saves most of the flight's passengers, questions arise when it comes to light that Whip may have been under the influence while commanding the plane. The initial crash sequence may be traumatizing for those prone to flight fear, but once the action ends, the dramatic story gives way for Washington to impress in a subtle performance that can be difficult to watch at times. The DVD comes with featurettes and highlights from a cast Q&A.

Celeste & Jesse Forever

Andy Samberg and Rashida Jones star as exes who still share a special connection after their marriage has dissolved. Their friends (including Ari Graynor and Eric Christian Olsen) find their relationship to be borderline inappropriate, but Celeste and Jesse are determined to stay best friends, until certain circumstances force them to decide to get back together or end their relationship for good. The movie is charming and relatable, and the leads are as endearing as the film's complementary soundtrack.

Denzel Washington Shares His Fondest Oscar Memory at Luncheon

Flight star Denzel Washington was celebrating his sixth Academy Award nomination at today's Oscars Luncheon, and the actor graciously answered a couple questions for the press.

Flight star Denzel Washington was celebrating his sixth Academy Award nomination at today's Oscars Luncheon, and the actor graciously answered a couple questions for the press. The best part of Washington's interview, though, was when he shared his favorite Oscar memory from years past, revealing how supportive his daughter is, even when she was too little to get his opponents' names correct.

On whether any real-life pilots have had any strong reactions to his portrayal: "Nothing negative . . . or too positive. I talked to a couple of pilots I fly with pretty regularly. They know it's acting."

On his fondest memory of being nominated for an Oscar: "My daughter drew a picture of Oscar, and it said, "You're my Oscar anyway. Plus, I don't like Kevin Space."

On fellow nominee Quvenzhané Wallis: "Was she here? I gotta meet her! Maybe if I'm nice to her, she'll put me in one of her movies."

Well, it looks like the Twilight Saga will be going out in style — at the box office, anyway.

Breaking Dawn Part 2 took in a whopping $141.3 million in its opening weekend, leaving the rest of the movies in the dust. Last week's winner, Skyfall, dropped to second with $41.5 million, while Lincoln benefited from its wide release, earning an impressive $21 million. Other newcomers Silver Linings Playbook and Anna Karenina took in less than a half million each but are expected to fare much better once they expand.

Flight Trailer: A Troubled Denzel Washington Lands a Floundering Flight

Denzel Washington has already proven his superhuman skills at stopping trains on-screen, but now it appears he's just as apt at landing planes.

Denzel Washington has already proven his superhuman skills at stopping trains on-screen, but now it appears he's just as apt at landing planes. In Flight, Washington plays Whip, an airline pilot who miraculously lands a plane as it's about to crash. While he is initially celebrated as an American hero for saving the lives of almost all the passengers, eventually investigations surface and questions about the alcohol content in his blood arise. Attorneys scramble to figure out if they have a case against Whip, but soon realize that no one else could have landed that flight safely.

I didn't expect to be as excited by this trailer as I am. I love that director Robert Zemeckis paired it with the haunting "Gimme Shelter" and Washington, Don Cheadle, and John Goodman make for a compelling cast. It also doesn't look like a straightforward hero story; Whip clearly has his own demons, which come into play when he has to deal with the public backlash caused by his investigation. It also opens the door that it may not have been his skills as a pilot, but divine intervention that saved the plane. The flick comes out Nov. 2, and you can watch the trailer when you read more.

Have You Ever Shushed Someone on the Plane?

I was trying to get some shut-eye on my red-eye last night, but it was hard because these women sitting in front of me kept gabbing and giggling.

I was trying to get some shut-eye on my red-eye last night, but it was hard because these women sitting in front of me kept gabbing and giggling. To top it all off, a little kid started crying. I don't think there's anything I could've done about the kid, but I was quite tempted to tell those women to keep their chatter down a little. Turns out, someone did the job for me, and I thankfully managed to get in some snooze time. I'm wondering, have you ever shushed anyone on the plane or have been tempted to? Share your stories!

P.L.O.W. - Birds in Flight

Part of the reason I love to be outside is because of the astounding wildlife I get to observe, especially birds.

Part of the reason I love to be outside is because of the astounding wildlife I get to observe, especially birds. The end of the summer is a great time to catch glimpses of all types of birds getting ready to migrate to warmer places. I love bringing binoculars along when I hike so if a hawk or some geese fly overhead, I can get a closer look.

This play list is in honor or those gorgeous winged creatures. When I look up and see them, I think about what it must be like to soar overhead and gaze down at our beautiful earth. It makes me feel small in a way, and it reminds me to appreciate the important things in life.
