With swimming and gymnastics getting all the attention, let us remind you of one of our favorite (and rather obscure) Olympic sports: trampoline! Performing complicated tricks while catching big air, trampolining takes an incredible amount of skill and strength. Check out the airborne acrobatics in the men's medal competition on Aug. 3 and the women's gold-medal competition the following day. To better appreciate the sport, watch this video and learn more about trampolining's history and how the skills are scored.

Righteous Retro Workout: Trampoline

At its best, exercise should be effective and fun, because if you don't enjoy it, you aren't likely to keep it up.
Calories Burned From Jumping on a Trampoline

At its best, exercise should be effective and fun, because if you don't enjoy it, you aren't likely to keep it up. While we mock some old-school fitness techniques and trends, there are lessons and moves to be learned from popular exercise trends of the past. (Think Buns of Steel, The Firm, and Jane Fonda).

In celebration of these totally righteous retro workouts, we're spotlighting some classic and cool exercises that should never go out of style, like roller skating. Today, we pay homage to the heart-pumping, youthful, and joyous trampoline you loved as a kid. Why should you jump right in and turn the beloved jumpy into workout equipment? Find out and have some fun getting into old-school shape.

Class Act: Jump Into an Air Conditioning Trampoline Workout

Inspired by the fact that I'm typically the adult that won't get out of the bounce house at kids' birthday parties and jumping reviews of San Fransisco's trampoline park House of Air, I recently expanded my fitness routine's heights with an Air Conditioning trampoline class.

Inspired by the fact that I'm typically the adult that won't get out of the bounce house at kids' birthday parties and jumping reviews of San Fransisco's trampoline park House of Air, I recently expanded my fitness routine's heights with an Air Conditioning trampoline class.

The park touts the class as the "most exciting workout you can get in public," so my workout buddy and I went in with sky high expectations. Would we learn tricks? Would we jump barefoot? Would we sweat? In short: Oh yes. Oh no. Oh yes! The class, which costs $16 for a single, one-hour session and $144 for a pack of 10 sessions, was held in House of Air's Matrix — a giant jumpy field of 42 conjoined trampolines. There were about 20 people in the 7 a.m. class (two guys and the rest all women I'd put in the 25 to 35 demo), and after slipping on special house-provided wrestling shoes, we spread out into personal trampoline areas. Where did we go from there?

A Visit to San Francisco's House of Air Trampoline Gym

While some may consider it a super scary workout, jumping on a trampoline is one of my favorite exercises of all time.

While some may consider it a super scary workout, jumping on a trampoline is one of my favorite exercises of all time. Luckily, a brand-new trampoline park recently opened in San Francisco, and I got to check it out for myself. The House of Air indoor trampoline park is like nothing you've seen before. Comprised of three main areas, the House of Air calls an old airplane hangar home, and touches of airplane vernacular are found throughout (i.e. jumpers are called "flyers," staff are referred to as "air traffic controllers"). I got to test out three different areas: the Matrix, 42 conjoined trampolines spanning the entire width of the structure; the Colosseum, 22 conjoined trampolines set up for dodgeball and slam-dunk contests; and the Training Ground, three competition-grade trampolines with harnesses for the most intense aerial workouts.

Speak Up: Are There Any Workouts You're Afraid Of?

One person's fear is another's passion, at least when it comes to certain workouts.

One person's fear is another's passion, at least when it comes to certain workouts. Whether you're adventurous or not, it's possible that a certain workout could strike fear into your heart. Here's a list of a few "extreme" workouts that people either love or hate:

  • Rock climbing Sure, you may be completely safe and supported by ropes during your climb, but a fear of heights is a fear of heights!

  • Mountain biking Challenging and intense, mountain biking makes for a great workout, but flying down a hill at full speed over rocky terrain could make a nervous biker feel unsafe.
  • Trampoline, trapeze or other aerial arts Flying through the air with the greatest of ease or hurling yourself high into the air is the ultimate fun workout for some daredevils. Aerial workouts may be growing in popularity, but I know plenty of fit ladies who'd rather stay close to the ground.
  • Boxing and kickboxing Kicking and punching a heavy object: stress relieving or too confrontational? Though there are plenty of days when working frustrations with this exercise seems mandatory, there are plenty of people who are turned off by its combative nature.

So, tell me: are there any exercises or workouts that scare you? Or any that you refuse to try?

Trampoline Workout on Steroids

I took gymnastics like many young girls, and while I loved playing with the white powder by the uneven bars, my favorite part of class was jumping on the trampoline.

I took gymnastics like many young girls, and while I loved playing with the white powder by the uneven bars, my favorite part of class was jumping on the trampoline. Who knew I could have made a career out of it! Check out this video of a strong and fearless acrobat practicing his Cirque du Soleil act that involves bouncing off walls and doing flips from one trampoline to another. Amazing.
