5 Solutions to Beginner Bike Commuting Problems

That fact that it's National Bike Month and the warmer Spring days may mean you have cycling on the brain.

That fact that it's National Bike Month and the warmer Spring days may mean you have cycling on the brain. Whether you're participating in Bike to Work Day or you're starting a commuting routine, here are some solutions to your newbie concerns.

  1. I don't know my route: Finding a bike-friendly route is especially crucial if you're a cycling newbie, so before your actual commute, find out how the cyclists in your area do it, plan or map your route and test-ride it when the roads are not so busy. Keep in mind, the best (and safest) cycling route is not always the same way you get there when driving or on the bus. Read more about how to plan and prepare for your bike commute here.
  2. I don't know what gear I need: Commuting by bike demands that attention is paid to what you're wearing and carrying. You know that a helmet is a necessity, so here are a few cute and functional bike helmets made for just women. But there's more; find out exactly which five essentials you need if you're bike commuting here.

This Guy Biked 38 Miles to Work — How Was Your Morning?

I could not have asked for a better Bike to Work Day: San Francisco has brand new bike lanes, I scored a new bag, and it was perfect bicycle weather.

I could not have asked for a better Bike to Work Day: San Francisco has brand new bike lanes, I scored a new bag, and it was perfect bicycle weather. Best of all it reminded me that I should be biking to work every day, not just a few times a week like I do now. I was also reminded of this when I toured the Timbuk2 offices last week. Not only does CEO Mike Wallenfels ride 38 miles to work, three times a week, he's celebrating National Bike Month by doing the commute every day this month. My three-mile, 20-minute commute seems more than manageable compared to the two and a half hours it takes Mike to leave his home in Novato, cross the Golden Gate Bridge, and arrive at the Timbuk2 offices in San Francisco. Check out this (abridged!) video of Mike in action!

Are You Biking to Work During National Bike Month?

While most of the country celebrates Bike to Work Day on the third Friday of May, San Francisco (home of Sugar HQ) will be celebrating it on Thursday, May 13.

While most of the country celebrates Bike to Work Day on the third Friday of May, San Francisco (home of Sugar HQ) will be celebrating it on Thursday, May 13. In honor of the day, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition will be serving coffee and snacks to cyclists throughout the city, as well as handing out free tote bags. There're also going to be a few pop-up bike mechanic stations, a raffle with some sweet prizes, and entertainment. While it can be a bit hectic, I am definitely making a point to ride to work on Thursday. It's a great way to increase bike awareness to motorists, and it encourages newbies to start riding to work. Most of all it's super fun, and a great way to meet people involved in the cycling community.

I'd love to know if you're planning on celebrating Bike to Work Day, or if you are making an extra effort to ride your bike throughout May in honor of National Bike Month. Tell me . . .

Tomorrow Is Bike to Work Day!

If you're interested in experimenting with a two wheel commute, let me remind you that in the Bay Area, and elsewhere around the country, Thursday, May 14 is Bike to Work Day.

If you're interested in experimenting with a two wheel commute, let me remind you that in the Bay Area, and elsewhere around the country, Thursday, May 14 is Bike to Work Day.

If you can't ride the whole way you can try to bike part of your commute — because something is better than nothing for both you and the environment. In many other cities, Bike to Work Day is Friday — check the League of American Cyclists for listing of events by state. Regardless, be sure to check in with your local bike coalition since chances are high they will have watering stations set up for cyclists and many offer goody bags for pedaling commuters. Will you be biking to work soon?

It's Bike to Work Day! Bush Asks For Gas, WI Man Isn't Buying

On this Bike to Work Day, US President George W.

On this Bike to Work Day, US President George W. Bush is taking the theme to heart. This photo was snapped yesterday while he was taking a spin on an Israeli-made bicycle presented to him by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. Despite his new wheels, Bush was in Saudi Arabia this morning asking for more gas from King Abdullah.

It was Bush's second attempt at persuading the oil-rich nation to pump out more fuel and drive down huge gas prices sucking US consumers dry. The first attempt in January was met with a wintry response. The kingdom said it would increase production only when the market justified it, and that production levels appeared normal. Some economists attribute the high prices to increased demand, rather than stingy supply.

In the effort to curtail the pump-crunch the National Sporting Goods Association is hoping to combat the shrinking numbers of bikers — the number of Americans who bike frequently dwindled almost 10 percent in 2007 to 3.7 million people — and encourage pedal-powered commutes. One Wisconsin man has made the big plunge — to see his story and some fuel-saving tips, read more
